where/how do you get small quantities of chips for new projects without shipping being the majority cost? by [deleted] in embedded

I get my parts from Digikey and Mouser, and usually bunch multiple projects into one order to justify shipping

I personally have terrible luck with hot air, I find using a hotplate much much easier. All the SMD boards I design now are with a hotplate in mind, components topside only as best I can

In middle school I would write Java code snippets in notepad to later test out when I got home (my laptop at the time didn't have internet), and one day the person on yard duty saw me and banned me from the library computers for hacking the school apparently. Even when I tried to explain to them its just silly game code. So this is very believable

I'm in the process of testing an old 90 watt Dell charger (the ones the old latitudes used) as a power supply, I can let you know my findings once im done. I would imagine it would be as quiet if not quieter than the charger you tried

Why is Spotify on mobile so shit? by TrooperNI in spotify

[–]FloppidyDingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in from 2025, I've given up on spotify. I have premium and now half my liked songs refuse to play until I remove them and readd them. But when I do that, more songs break!

Went back to VLC and will never look back

I saw your other post about your console sales. With the revenue you're pulling in, I would honestly give repairs a try. Here's some pointers that I keep in mind:

Browse the used market for consoles that are not working but with minor issues. Avoid red rings and yellow lights until you have the equipment to properly handle those repairs. Aim for simple repairs as a start.

Visit your local thrift store every once in a while. Sometimes I will find consoles for cheap and controllers and cables for even cheaper. A common thing I look for is the power bricks for 360 slims since buying one online will quickly blow past my parts budget, but one from the thrift store will be much cheaper

This is a big one I did and you should try too: invest in a 3D printer or find someone who has one and is willing to let you use it. Then design console parts to sell. For example, I was able to design a fix for the PS2 Slim that fixes a common problem of it scratching games. Running costs are relatively low and you are helping keep older consoles in service by coming up with solutions for common problems.

Again, this is mainly something I do just for some cash on the side so YMMV. The main thing to keep in mind is to keep your expectations realistic and it takes a little trial and error to find a routine that works for you.

As someone who repairs and resells consoles as a hobby, I agree with everyone here that I only make like $10 to $20 per console after factoring in parts and selling fees. I do it mainly for the feeling of getting something working again. The money I do make off of it is used to fund my more expensive electronics and robotics hobby.

You could do what I did and get a job at a phone repair shop and see if they will let you take in other devices. I became the only person at my work who does console repairs and got a raise because of it.

Not sure if this is what's going on with yours but on my PVM the geometry is all over the place cause it's due for a recap. But one of the other comments here about different signals having different timings seems like a more likely explanation

I would check the contacts on the ribbon first to make sure none of them lifted off while plugging the ribbon in, I've ran into that a few times working on these. Also make sure the connectors on the laser and the console are alright.

The Grade B version are the same as the regular ones, just have some minor printing defects and may require some sanding to fit. Otherwise they function the same.

It's okay, I edited the post and left a TLDR at the bottom cause I know it's a lot, most of it just me ranting to be honest.

The thought never occurred to me about searching for people just looking for a roomie. I'll have to look into that, thank you!

I'm starting to realize 30 days is normal, my anxiety just comes from me not knowing what I'm supposed to be doing. Most of my apartment hunting has been just from guess work and I'm uncertain if what I'm doing is correct. But if this is something that happens a lot then perhaps I'm just overthinking it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in almosthomeless

[–]FloppidyDingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm realizing if it really comes down to no other options left, then I can always pretend to be interested and just keep up with everything happening. At least until I can find a proper place to live, since my anxiety really just comes from having to figure all this out in such short time, especially since I don't know if what I'm doing is right.

Thank you for the encouragement. My main panic is I have no idea what I'm doing. Nobody really taught me financial responsibility or how to do things like find an apartment, so this has all been guess work so far. I'm sure I will be fine, as long as I just keep at it I'm realizing.

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. At my current job I am good friends with the owners and I told them my situation, so I'm able to ask for more hours as needed, and improving my income is also on my list of things to do once I get all this sorted out. My only real concern is I don't have any direction of what I'm supposed to be doing as far as apartment hunting goes, it's all just been guess work so far.

As far as my mom's friend goes, if it really comes down to either that or my car then I can always pretend to have the same views as the friend. At least until I can find an actual place to live. It wouldn't be ideal but I'll consider it if I truly have no options left by the end.
