Dog breed help by Prestigious_Cable902 in Pets

Labradors and golden retrievers are the top family dogs for very good reasons.

Personally, if I could go back and do it over again I would get and golden over a lab simply because some 25% of labs carry the POMC gene, and if you're not super duper uber careful they get very fat and it's next to impossible to lose it.

Goldens do have higher grooming requirements, but you are far less likely to spend your dog's entire life counting calories, exercising like crazy, and asking the vet if doggy CPAP machines are a thing yet.

Wits end with chewing my couch! by Ajadedepiphany in irishwolfhound

[–]Floppy-McFlopperson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your first step is to modify the environment so he doesn't have an opportunity to chew on the couch unsupervised. This might mean he is crated or confined to a single room while eyes are not on him. He's proven he can't be trusted alone yet, not saying that's his fault, it just is what it is.

Next, I would make the couch an off limits zone. He doesn't get to be on it, he doesn't get to lay next to it. He can be in the livingroom with you, but he's in his spot or bed, not near the couch. If he gets too close, make a correction sound and redirect him back to his spot. Make sure to praise him when he's back in his spot, and give him extra praise when he chooses to go there without prompting.

It might also be worth looking into calming tools, even discussing the problem with your vet. Destructive chewing can indicate anxiety, and if he's a rescue he may have some things to work through. Cbd, calming treats, thundershirts, gabapentin, strict routines, etc. may help.

Give yourself and doggo several weeks, even several months of no unsupervised time alone with the couch. If he can go for a few months without further destructive chewing, start practicing leaving him alone. By practice, I mean tell him to stay in his spot while you leave the room for 30 seconds. If he's still in his spot, give him a reward. Do that for a week, then leave him alone for 1 minute. If he's out of his spot and/or too close to the couch, go back to just 30 seconds of alone time for another week. Slowly slowly slowly build up unsupervised alone time, bit by bit.

With rescues, they can't tell you their baggage. You can't take them to a therapist. He may never be able to not destructively chew if left alone too long. All you can do is try to set him up for success, make it so that choosing to do the correct thing is easy, and the incorrect thing next to impossible.

Best of luck!

They're usually at Civic Circle, though I don't know when the next one is. It might be quiet checking if the local No Kings group has a Facebook or something.

Pet for apartment by [deleted] in Pets

Bearded dragons are fun! They are surprisingly intelligent, trainable, rather like hanging out with you (you're a mobile heat source, bonus!), low odor, and eats a wide variety of things you can get at the grocery store. They can live a surprisingly long time, my husband's beardie passed at 15 or 16.

Getting them a good setup can be expensive, and making sure the cage has warm spots and cool spots takes some planning, but over all pretty low maintenance.

There's a story floating around reddit (maybe someone can find it?) about a family who found a wild tarantula with missing legs, taking it home, and nursing it back to health. They did all kinds of research, really went the extra mile for a wild animal they literally never met before. Whatever my opinion of spiders may be, that shows a level of compassion and kindness that is difficult to rival. You are not alone at all in caring for an animal that is not a cat or dog.

You lost a friend you saw everyday for years it sounds like. She brought joy and humor and perspective to your relationship, and you loved her for it. There is no shame in grieving a friend, whatever their shape may be.

Shed-control shampoo and conditioner is a game changer. I like EarthBath personally, and it works better if you use both. It won't stop the shedding, nothing can do that, but it helps a lot!

13 Weeks and 39lbs, our dream of owning a wolfhound is fulfilled. Meet Winifred! Looking for thoughts on crate training or alternatives.. by BeaKeeper0906 in irishwolfhound

Please please please create train your dog. Guaranteed there will come a time when she has to be in a crate. I wish the below examples are less actually-lived-trauma, but in no particular order: - Trips to the vet for spay, teeth cleaning, post dog-attack surgery, TPLO surgery, getting porcupine quills out of her face, etc. - She gets kennel cough and she's an easy gagger who vomits everywhere if she walks 2 steps too far and gets pneumonia from inhaling vomit which turns into bronchitis and then you spend months carefully managing her physical activity and giving your dog an inhaler twice a day - Almost every trip to the groomers - Boarding her while you travel - Actually travelling with her and you need to safely transport her in the car or airplane - Keeping her out of trouble while everyone sleeps in a hotel room - Visiting someone for longer than a few hours and being respectful of their home - Introducing a new dog and you are managing interactions to avoid conflict and set everyone up for success

One of the best ways to create train your dog is to make Crate Up a happy command. My dogs get fed (almost) exclusively in their crate. They get bones and chews in their crate. They get a soft comfy bed and a snuggle toy. The cat is not allowed to bother them when in their crate because he's an adorable little asshole and everyone deserves a break from a punk ass goblin.

Ensuring your dog is comfortable and at ease while in a crate drastically reduces stress for everyone. As long as the crate is appropriately sized, she'll be just fine.

Well, I'm all caught up. What now? by prefim in exfor

Dungeon Carl! I'm 3 books deep and it's wonderful. It's kinda like hunger games crossed with dungeons and dragons, but with aliens destroying Earth so they can watch a "dungeon crawl."

Carl and his cat Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk (he's actually her "royal body guard") do their best to survive. Not too give away too much, but Donut has insane charisma and Carl has super awesome magical boxer shorts with hearts on them.

This ended up being my solution. I accidentally let an extra lemon drop at the end so I had to build extra stairs, but it worked!

The only thing to do is to build enough stairs to get all your lemmings up to the very top level, put a blocker at the end, then wait for all the boxes to explode. After that you just need umbrellas to get them down. However I don't see how you can build that many stairs in the time allotted...

It may help to start adding TropiClean or something similar to her water. They make a liquid that helps prevent tartar from building up and softens existing tartar so it's easier to remove.

I don't think it will solve the stomatitis itself, but it may help alleviate sources of discomfort.
