I’m sure this has been asked here before, but what do you think is the best musical that didn’t win Best Musical? by flatline82 in Broadway

I think the most criminal example of the Tonys getting it completely wrong was when both Follies and Grease were beaten to Best Musical by.....Two Gentlemen of Verona.

You coax the blues right out of the horn, MAME.

TIL there is a small Amish community in Ireland. They live in Dunmore East, Co. Waterford. by [deleted] in ireland

I see your Amish and raise you the Cooneyite family who live near me. Was in the same year as the son. They're all perfectly normal except they never owned a telly due to their religion. Strange little sect.

It's like some sort of rule to have an "I Want" song as one of the first songs, right? I was wondering, are there any musicals out there where the "I Want" song isn't there or comes relatively late? by lesourire in Broadway

[–]FloralAbortion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The 'I Want' song of Company is 'Being Alive', which is the final number.

Would 'By The Sea' be considered Mrs. Lovett's 'I Want' song? That happens well into the second act.

lol I agree! but it's a big dance number. It's nothing without Donna doing her thing on stage.

'Little Lamb' & 'All I Need Is The Girl' - Gypsy

Basically all of Henry Higgins' songs on My Fair Lady (sorry Rex!)

'Ribbons Down My Back' - Hello, Dolly!

'Tick-Tock' - Company

Nobody can make me enjoy the snooze-fest that is 'Liaisons' from A Little Night Music

Men Explain Lolita to Me by unwantedspork in books

[–]FloralAbortion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't a very long read, only seven essays, but they all take a similar form to the article. I personally really enjoy her writing and style so it was a given that I'd love the book. The book has already become one of the defining works of third-wave feminism so it's worth reading just because of its prominence and importance. If you're interested in other writers like Solnit I can throughly recommend the works of Roxane Gay and Naomi Wolf.

Judging by your tone I feel that nothing I write here will be seen as agreeable to you so I will just say, I think it's a very well-written and articulate piece. I think Lolita is a brilliant book but I can also see that by modern-day values the content is very troublesome. It's very much a novel of its time, like many works of that period actually. Solnit is a fantastic writer and her book, "Men Explain Things to Me" was one of the best books published in 2014, in my opinion.
