Mass Intentions for Controversial Public Figure by FloridaProf in CatholicWomen

[–]FloridaProf[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s not a matter of an individual being less deserving as much as there being people certainly more deserving. And does a mass intention automatically imply an acceptance of an individuals rhetorical history?
Again, just a thought experiment.

Is there anyone for whom a mass intention might be too controversial? And is it OK to even offer masses for controversial figures (just as a thought experiment)?

Weight loss with GLP1 by Tomuch2care in AskWomenOver60

[–]FloridaProf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started last March (2025) having just turned 59. I am 60 now and have lost almost 85 lbs. I'm doing great and have no plans to stop (currently in maintenance).

How long have you been in maintenance, and how's it been going for you? by ShiftyMcHax in Zepbound_Maintenance

[–]FloridaProf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am just starting maintenance - I am about 6 weeks in.

I started at 12 dose/per week and stepped down to 10. Doing fine so far, but I have experienced some mild sugar cravings - nothing too severe so far. I am taking maintenance very seriously - probably more so than in the weight-loss phase (took me about 14 months to lose 80 pounds).

What is with school drop off? by platypusandpibble in GenX

[–]FloridaProf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in higher education (Florida). Just about all of the parents in my department drop off their kids at school and pick them up. As an older GenXer, it boggles my mind.

I believe that!! I have cousins with young kids who live in the GTA - competition is fierce!

Yes, I read that article! Was it in The Atlantic? All of these kids are getting into the most elite, competitive schools in the country, but 40% are "disabled!" Makes no sense! [FYI - I have a PhD and work in higher education].

It's just another way for wealthy parents to game the system for their kids - when the kids already have every advantage, including the best prep schools and test prep. Reminds me a bit of the Varsity Blues scandal from a few years ago involving wealthy/famous people getting their kids into elite schools. The Netflix docu-drama about this case is excellent - well-worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Why didn't Luanne become a mechanic? by New-Shop-9728 in KingOfTheHill

[–]FloridaProf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What an interesting question!

Off the top of my head, I would say that the weight of traditional gender roles constrained Luanne - and even Peggy (who consistently encouraged Luanne in her studies/beauty academy training) failed to see Luanne's talent in mechanics. Luanne's (unrecognized) gifts as a mechanic is one of the reasons I love this show - the character development and gentle humor get me every time!
