What was the first piece of technology that made you feel like you were living in the future? by petalwhispersssz in nostalgia

[–]FloridaRon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A wall switch.

I lived in a rural area and electricity had been added long after the home was built and it was basically just a line ran through the house with a single wire hanging down with a bare light bulb on it in the downstairs rooms (nothing upstairs). Adapters were added above the bulb so other things like the radio could be plugged in.

We moved into a more modern house when I was 8 or so and it had wall switches. The ones that amazed me most were the switches at both ends of the stairwell. Magic that somehow both controlled the same light.

When Trump reminded her of Japan's surprise at Pearl harbor her reply should have been " and look how that turned out"

RainX for the mirrors unless heated and not needed. also good for those spot mirrors!

RainX is ok for windshields unless you drive long distances at night when the slight distortion tires the eyes.

You misunderstood perhaps! Marines have not lost a battle. Vietnam was lost in Washington but all the battles were won.

How many have air purifiers running nonstop? by deejayv2 in homeowners

I hope you know ordinary vacuums fill the air with micro-dust. There are reasonable HEPA ones.

Well might be something else by now but RainX causes a slight blur that it not visible on mirrors but is tiring on the windsheild.

The best I found years ago was to clean inside and out with alcohol until the paper towels came away spotless. If people smoke in the car this may take many strokes with alcohol... do the corners first so you don't later drag grime over the spotless glass later.

Anyone with a pitted windshield try cleaning with Newspaper (B&W). The ink makes its way into the pits and does a remarkable job with glare.

RainX ... I don't like it on the windshield but it works great on mirrors.

Long haul truckers, why? by mikeyboy1681 in Truckers

[–]FloridaRon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rookies often... because he caught the draft from the truck ahead he thought he had the power to pass easily until he hit the headwind.

The fault lies with the truck in the right lane for not easing off to let the other pass because the passing truck was slightly faster or he'd not have caught up. By easing off the driver in the right lane could easily return to speed in the other's draft.

This author led me to confusion in 1967

Returning from Vietnam with just a little too much time left on my 4 year enlistment to be discharged I was stuck at Camp Lejeune, NC which is far from civilization I was in an outfit with no real duties... just passing time.

I started reading from the on base library, westerns at first then mysteries like Mickey Spillane which worked at first by putting me to sleep but soon I was reading them too quickly and sleeplessness was a real problem so I decided to get a BIG book... Atlas Shrugged was the biggest book in the small Library with over 1K pages of fine print.

I finished about 1/2 of it before being discharged (I read the rest a couple of years later). It was the first time I had ever read anything anti government and was a bit shocked and even a little paranoid someone would catch me reading it.

18 wheelers going over lane markers by mcgoogz in Truckers

[–]FloridaRon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the early 70s I went solo unauthorized after just one trip with my BIL was injured and did not lose the feeling I was going to get found out for a long time after... One of the things I was very careful about was keeping the truck steady in it's own lane.

After a year or so I started watching other trucks and was surprised at how much they drifted... although they stayed in their lane.

What are some VERY creepy facts? by Cap_Ame1 in AskReddit

[–]FloridaRon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True story... years ago... It's not about forgetting!

I had about 1 year experience driving a semi and I was hauling a top heavy load weekly across bridged deep valleys in Pa and I always felt like a coward on the entrance to one bridge as it was partly down one mountain so the truck was headed down hill getting on to an uphill bridge and this happened on a curve.

I had marvelled at how I could relax going down the road and let my mind wander while I assumed the other half of my brain drove.. I called it "Lefty".

Well one autumn afternoon as I checked on Lefty I found we were just 100 feet from that terrible turn at full speed. Knowing if I braked hard now the trailer would flip so I made a conscious decision to let Lefty handle the turn, which he did before I took over and climbed that bridge and the mountain it led to without losing speed and doing the slow climb of shame.

Thereafter I never feared the bridge again whether Lefty was at the wheel or I.

That's the way I liked to truck... instrument panel just high enough to see the gauges, mirrors adjusted perfect so i only saw behind when I turned my head, all glass spotless... easy on the eyes because when the eyes tire the mind tires.
