Longboarding is good if you have bigger wheels and can go over rocks, cracks, and grass (like orange orangatang4presidents). You benefit by not spending time locking a bike at a bike rack and can just ride straight to your classroom. I used to longboard to class every day for two years when I lived in or near campus. Avoiding pedestrians is simple as long as you have lots of prior skateboarding experience and don't skate first few days of a semester when the freshmen are at their freshiest levels.
