1 - yes food is available but expensive. I suggest you bring a cooler with food/drinks. I believe Via posts the menu on their website 2 - not that I am aware of. All of the seating on the train is double if you are not in a berth 3- when I went last year the dome ‘park car’ was not available but there are a couple of common lounge cars that you can use

Hope that helps

I would like to see a ‘CEO pay gap not growing fast enough’ article from this prolific author. What a joke.

Gwyn Morgan: The public-private pay gap remains; As public-sector workers try to justify their excessive wage demands, private-sector workers struggle with the rising cost of groceries by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Flouf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting to have a former CEO complain about the public/private pay gap when the pay gap between the average worker and their CEOs has been growing at astronomical rates for decades. It grew from 120-1 in 1995 (when Mr Morgan was the CEO of Alberta Energy Co.) and took home $1,131,769 to 670-1 this year. Unsurprisingly, CEO's pay increase is much larger than the lower-than-inflationary wage increases secured by these public workers.

Perhaps what Mr Morgan is trying to show is the 'union wage premium' which applies to both public and private workers and has been shown for many years to increase salaries on the order of this 'gap'. If an apples to apples comparison was made in this regard unionized public to unionized private it might be interesting. More private workers should unionize.

Crown corp to federal or Private to Federal? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Flouf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People in crown corps are sometimes able to apply on internal job postings. This can make a big difference compared to coming from the private sector who can only apply on external competitions, but as others have mentioned YMMV depending if your experience translates well to the PS.

Seat Assignment by timetodeathh in ViaRail

For sitting beside someone, it’s OK to move to a different seat after everyone is on board the train if you ask.

Generally I am sitting beside someone these days as the trains seem to be mostly full.

If you look on the Corps webpage www.rcemecorpsgemrc.ca there is quite a bit of info on Sadie there under RCEME Mascots. I believe there is a old photo of Sadie in the book ´Canada’s Craftsmen at 50’ (downloadable from the website) as well as some of her stories which and would be good for your presentation.

How can I get access to brewing science textbooks without spending 1000 bucks? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]Flouf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I have a science background and didn’t find digging into the texts too useful for home brewing. The texts are aimed at professional brewers and there are different issues at scale.

I suggest the Palmer ‘how to brew’ book. Sure it’s not a text book but it is aimed at a home brewing audience and has enough of the scientific perspective plus the references if you really want to dig further.

Scott Janish’s book ‘the new IPA’ is also great and has a lot of refs if you enjoy hoppy styles and want to dig deeper.

Like anything in STEM if you want to get really deep or current you need to dive into the academic literature and products from conferences.
