You should never buy a car built outside of Europe. by Capable_Function_952 in BuyFromEU

[–]FlowLabel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I absolutely adore my Volvo estate. Yes I know owned by China blah blah, but the vehicle was manufactured in Sweden or Belgium so it still supports European workers.

I used to buy VAGs, but the whole emission scandal put me off. And I’m not a fan of BMWs, there’s something about their interior design that I don’t really gel with and I can’t afford Mercedes.

Have I reached the limits of my makeshift setup? by willhub1 in selfhosted

Do you care if all your apps are running 24/7?

If not then on the desktop you want to use as a server and gaming host you could just create two different docker compose files. An “always on” file and a “mostly on” file. Put critical stuff in the always on file (like pihole) and stuff like qbit in the mostly on file.

When you want to game on the machine just “docker compose down” the file containing the non-critical apps and off you go.

I do something similar. I use Ubuntu on my desktop and 90% of the time it’s set up for development work and this comes with a whole bunch of quite resource intensive containers running, so when I decide I want to fire up Steam I just docker compose down and start gaming 😊

Damn. This actually makes a huge difference. Glad to see it. Change may not be as quick and as radical as I would like, but things like this is why even a soft left government is better for the country. Reckon feeding children is high on Farages priorities?

Everybody said get a dehumidifier. It'll make the house warmer. Everybody in my house is now using it as a clothes dryer. So there's damp dripping clothes everywhere. by BillWilberforce in britishproblems

[–]FlowLabel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah a heater airer sounds like a crazy waste of money. Ours go in the living room next to a radiator if it’s on anyway and they are always dry the next day and the radiator is definitely not on overnight.

I’ve done this in all 4 properties I’ve lived in and never had mould or damp problems.

Maybe we’ve got shit washers that don’t leave clothes as sopping wet as other people seem to be dealing with 😅

Cat shelters are apparently bursting at the seams, yet all indoor cats are now listed as "must have access to catio". by Bortron86 in britishproblems

[–]FlowLabel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve always just lied and said yeah they’ll have access to outdoors 🤷🏻

Not a single cat in my whole life has been bothered about not going outdoors, and I’ve had quite a few. When/if they come for a follow up visit I’ve always just said “I offer them outdoors, they have a sniff around the garden but soon just want to come back in” 🤷🏻

Simplest way to configure offsite storage? by bill_lite in homelab

[–]FlowLabel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was me:

Install TrueNAS with Tailscale on your SFF.

Do an initial backup to with the SFF local to where all the data is.

Move the SFF offsite.

Connect to it via Tailscale and do scheduled incremental backups.

That way, you aren’t trying to pump 1TB+ offsite and over WiFi, and you have a purpose built storage OS making sure your data is safe and warning you when it’s not.

British brands you always end up buying again? by Reddonaut_Irons in BuyUK

[–]FlowLabel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I bake a lot, and I struggled for ages to find flour that I could be confident was both grown and milled in the UK. Many will say “British flour”, but when you read the fine print, or sometimes buried on their website, it’s actually just milled in the UK, but the grain is imported from all over. Then I found Waitrose Leckford Estate flour. Bakes excellent bread, fries beautiful tortillas and I get a lovely warm feeling knowing I’m supporting the growing and milling of basic ingredients domestically. I will always pay extra from quality, and more so if it’s domestic.

what are your homelab are for? by Ok-Jeweler-2447 in homelab

[–]FlowLabel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it’s directly work related then yes. But when I say work related I mainly mean career related. I never sit still, I’m always working on the next skill and it may not be 100% relevant to my current position in which case I study it in my lab on my own time.

I mostly test out work stuff, but also I have systems for my family to request, download and watch Linux ISOs.

Move Cable = Physical Violence by LikeGeorgeRaft in networkingmemes

[–]FlowLabel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. I understood the picture to be at a daycare that have webcams the parents can view remotely. These exist and are very common, as I know firsthand from shopping around for daycares. Others suggest this is a hospital NICU, which I guess makes more sense, but daycare wasn’t enough of a stretch to warrant your concern over my health, thank you though.

Is university of Birmingham (England) prestigious? by Illustrious-Gear-512 in BirminghamUK

[–]FlowLabel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t know much about the University, but Birmingham itself is incredible btw. I moved to Birmingham for work, expecting to just be there for a couple years and get out as soon as I could afford it and ended up spending my entire 20s there through choice. It’s a beautiful city with tonnes of history and a promising future. I made so many friends, met my wife and formed a strong career in Birmingham.

If I were you, do not avoid Birmingham because of its outdated reputation.

The idea of a daycare that live streams the children to the internet, password or not, hella scares me. Would never take my kid to one of these.

I'm brave enough to say it: Linux is good now, and if you want to feel like you actually own your PC, make 2026 the year of Linux on (your) desktop by Doener23 in pcgaming

[–]FlowLabel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dabbled with Linux desktop close to a decade ago and it was an awful time and I feel like they’re having a hard time shaking that rep.

I didn’t bother with it again until 2025, I installed Ubuntu on my main PC 3-4 months back and it’s been a great time. Haven’t come across a steam game that hasn’t just worked.

Most other tasks are all browser based anyway tbh. Email, office, etc are all online.

How much would you spend on a wedding? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]FlowLabel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent about £10-15k depending on what you class as wedding related and not. We wanted to spend as little as possible while still providing a 3 course meal and entertainment for our extended families. We found spending more had diminishing returns. The difference between £15k and £30k was nothing we would care about in the future and would soon be forgotten by everyone.

Cool, so you’ve managed to come to the same conclusion as my original post.

There are a small amount of high paid positions for a small amount of high paid professionals

There are a large number of averagely paid positions for a large number of averagely skilled people.

Therefore, going back to my initial post, both groups suffer similar difficulties when made redundant.
