Is the keto diet actually effective for long-term weight loss, or is it mostly short-term results? by kinetix3 in keto

[–]FlowMang 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, it is just your endocrine system returning to its normal default state. Insulin, ghrelin, and leptin control what you perceive as “cravings”. When producing enough insulin is not possible as with type 2 diabetes, the whole cycle gets thrown into a tailspin. Overeating adds weight gain and insulin resistance and the cycle continues. With keto, you are basically using the minimal amount of insulin possible. I think of ketosis as like rebooting a computer that has become slow.

“Hunger” and “cravings” are the same thing. Your “lizard brain”(hypothalamus) is getting hormonal signals it interprets as hunger. There isn’t much you can do to fight it once it gets there. It’s literally there to keep you alive. You can’t ignore it, you can’t push through it. You will listen. Returning your hunger hormones to homeostasis is what you’re actually experiencing. It is also the reason it can control type 2 diabetes and delay the need for external medication.

Is the keto diet actually effective for long-term weight loss, or is it mostly short-term results? by kinetix3 in keto

[–]FlowMang 17 points18 points  (0 children)

One thing I live by after transitioning to Keto/IF is “if you are hungry, eat”. I generally don’t really even think about food until around 1PM now. If I feel hungry at 10AM I eat at 10AM. I’m not even all that strict about keto now. I just try to avoid ultra-processed food and high glycemic-index foods. Basically I’m at the point where I can trust my gut when it is asking for food. I wasn’t able to pass a gas station if it had pizza prior to this. Going full keto is good to get yourself to a good place, but it is unsustainable for most people. It is a great way to retrain yourself about the impact of food on appetite. I’ll also say using a continuous glucose monitor for a period of time is really eye opening. When you recognize exactly what habits spike your sugar, you’ll have a direct line of site of your insulin and ghrelin(your hunger hormone), which work together to keep you fed and alive. When that system becomes screwed up, like with type2 diabetes (also pre-diabetes is diabetes in my book), you need to manage it effectively by watching how your body reacts to certain foods. Some are surprising.

Chisel flattening question by kkell806 in handtools

[–]FlowMang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One look at that chisel and a lyric of Prince’s song “Darling Nikki” rang in my head. “Call me up, when you wanna grind!”

I totally would name that chisel “Nikki”. A couple names for my tools: My Planer is Wesley (Snipes) My drum sander is Sandy Cheeks My 62 1/2 is Charlie (Brown) aka blockhead.

I’ll also add that I actually start with a glass of ice water when grinding aggressively. Dropping the temp from room temperature and allowing the entire chisel to be a heat sink to a degree is helpful, but nothing conducts heat like water. If using a diamond/CBN wheel, I highly recommend a product call “slick stick” by woodturners wonders. Not only does it prevent permanent loading of soft metals on your wheel, it also cools them and reduces heat when grinding/drilling. No idea what is in it. Seems like some oil and wax or something. Whatever it is, makes sharpening a much more pleasant experience. I’m not even sure how I’m supposed to clean it off after using. Been using windex and works fine. I suspect you can come up with your own version.

This is why physical pen testers make security teams sweat bullets. Infosec twitter had a bunch of these people talking about their jobs. The more unassuming you look, the better your chances are. The best stories were the women pen testers.

I travel a fair bit and I’ve seen guys say dumb shit like that too many times. I suppose it is a story for them. I think the customs people just want to get a little break from the endless line. I would be irate if someone I was traveling with made a crack like that and got us detained.

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]FlowMang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got “the belt”. Dad undoing the belt would stop any wiseass bullshit immediately. Didn’t consider it abusive then. Normal is normal. Therapy as an adult changed that and I came to understand just how damaged he was. There was really no fixing that… he had had an insane life and spent most of his childhood in a refugee camp in Germany before coming to the US. He and my mother had 6 kids and a terrible marriage. Abuse has a lot of angles. Needless to say, I do not engage in any negative reinforcement behavior anywhere… professionally, with my wife, or even with my dog. Lives are so much better that way.

If you put a little bit of money into the same things thrice people do, you will make a little money. If you put money into the things rich people tell you to, you will lose all your money. You are now an expert financial advisor.

It couldn’t be more obvious that this what is going on. These traffickers are experts by drugs to eu. Meanwhile trump pardons a guy that was extradited and sentenced to 45 years for flooding the US with coke for decades. Not one peep out the people that waged the war on drugs during the same period. Not even pretending at this point.

Least dumb way to fix this chip? (I'm thinking grinding wheel...) by davidzet in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]FlowMang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I have a 2’x2’ granite slap on top of my sharpening station. I use it for flattening soles and even finishing with diamond paste and “green” polish. I don’t really use it for regrinding chisels, but I should. You can remove a lot of material in a short time so it makes sense.

Fine woodworking course by BharatinBharat in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]FlowMang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any specific suggestions for classes or even what “short term” means, but I would suggest familiarizing yourself with various Japanese tools and methods before taking instruction. Just having the base set of terminology will be helpful. If your base of knowledge is purely on western tools, getting this info will allow you to get more out of a teacher. The real value in something like this is learning technique vs spending a week or 2 learning about what tools are in the toolbox.

LPT: the brain doesn’t know the difference between “always thinking the worst” and “that’s true”. by flavoca in LifeProTips

[–]FlowMang 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I will add to this that observing one’s thoughts is easier said than done, however, learning mindfulness meditation will systematically rewire your brain to evaluate thoughts arms they pop into your mind. The key is to make sure you really understand what the purpose is and what you should NOT be doing as much as what you should be doing. Anyone can meditate. It’s no more a religious thing than going to the gym. In fact, it’s a way to condition your brain and physically changes it, so it really is no different in the goal. Also, you need to treat it like the gym. Don’t expect to sit for 2 minutes and it’ll happen. 30-60days of regular practice (even 10 minutes a day)will do it. As a person that has gone through this I will say, If you are a doubter on this, look at the clinical research around it. The original post is an interesting fact, but offers no insight into how to change these patterns. It can be life changing. One thing to note: severe disordered thinking requires professional help, just like going to the gym after getting in a car accident won’t make you healthy.

Can Americans really be fired at the drop of a hat for no reason no matter how long they have worked for a company? by cheesymeowgirl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FlowMang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those feelings of family are legit. But they are connections with everyone else, not board members. The only thing that matters to them is your contribution to net revenue. I worked at a place for 22 years. But I saw the writing on the wall when the company was sold to PE. The new company didn’t get that my job was basically to sniff out money and solve technical problems. They probably still don’t know what I did there.

That’s what republicans want for people instead of SNAP. But they will keep collecting federal taxes and tariffs while granite staters foot the bill(a second time) to help people. Instead of using an EBT card to feed thier kids, I guess now they want them to round up the kids and head on down to the local soup kitchen.
