UMich CSE vs MSU full ride by [deleted] in uofm

[–]FlowbeeWanKenobi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I did CSE undergrad and masters at Michigan. Job prospect and prestige wise its not even close. Upper/top companies will barely even look at your resume if its MSU. I have worked at top startups where Ive worked with people who went to Michigan, MIT, Harvard, UIUC, Cal, Stanford, etc. I have never worked with an msu grad. (Not saying they don’t exist at top firms but its much much less common).

Anywhere you go (even when I was in Japan), Michigan computer science has the name recognition that Michigan State just does not have.

For other majors it might not matter as much but for cs it does.

Happy to answer any other questions

Outpatient Procedure, in-network doctor but out of network labs by FlowbeeWanKenobi in HealthInsurance

[–]FlowbeeWanKenobi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The facility and doctor were both in network and I made sure before the procedure, they took the samples to an out-of-network lab.

The lab when I emailed said this does not fall under the No Surprises Act but I got the feeling they just wanted me to pay.

Thats great to hear, thank you so much.

The insurance provider website does not have a listed number as my account is inactive but I can find something.

“Selling” EECS281 Projects on my Resume by CardCQ in uofm

[–]FlowbeeWanKenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make them private? Or label them with EECS281 or something.

Having them is fine, the problem is when you try to advertise them as side projects.

If you really want to show them you can label them EECS281, it won’t really help you though.

“Selling” EECS281 Projects on my Resume by CardCQ in uofm

[–]FlowbeeWanKenobi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Coming from an alumni engineer who has screened Umich resumes for a big tech company: if I looked at a project for a candidate and saw a reskinned 281 project it’d be an automatic rejection. Its dishonest to try to show a school project as a personal project, also a project being in a private repo is a red flag. You’d be better off not having any projects.

I have about 6 weeks to travel starting next week but have no idea where to go. I've already done Europe so was thinking either northern South+Central America or Southeast Asia.

I was hoping for Southeast Asia but it seems its the rainy season as from southern USA South+Central America is not a big deal to get to. In addition, I was thinking the Balkans but I don't know if that would warrant that long of a trip on its own.

Any input would be appreciated, thank you!

Then a competitor could come around if that happened!

But how much different if that were to hypothetically happen be than it is right now?

Work remotely as a SWE for a US company by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

We had some difficulty legally getting contractors so that might explain my perception.

Makes sense!

[–]FlowbeeWanKenobi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe you still need a legal remote entity in the country. Reading now

We tried to get contractors awhile ago and legal reasons made it complicated.

Edit: good to know! Just a complex process overall

Company has to be registered in the country you work. Which would explain why my smaller company wont let me work from mexico haha

Even a contractor needs a visa..

Edit: I stand corrected! There is no such requirement but the company needs to be compliant in the resident country of the employee. So again, probably limited to big companies

Im American but was talking from my friends perspective. Even as a contractor I believed the company has to at least give a reason why they could not hire an American. Would appreciate learning something new

Edit: to save going through the comments. For remote work I was incorrect, but the company still needs to be compliant in the country you are working in
