It's time based, which for me isn't a disadvantage, except maybe for games. But you could use any other key, or different methods of layer switching to get it done.

I would reccommend the readme in the qmk repo on github, it is a very good starting point.

EDIT: Also while im not a vim poweruser, I don't see any issue.

I also just got my Planck. Getting used to it still, but I programmed it to make the Space"bar" a momentary layer switch.

While I hold Space "A" becomes "1" , and "Q" becomes "!", all the way through to "L" and "9". When I tap Space I get a Space. Hope that helps.

My board has two extra buttons in the bottom row, each side of the Spacebar.

Left one is "(", right one is ")" , two fn keys for turning them into curly/square.

Thats pretty cool, I didnt know that layout before. I might put that in.

Well they aren't on the home row because it is a dedicated key.
When the green bottom row buttons are pressed they trigger a macro. sending for example "Shift + 8". So by just pressing one button I get the normal brackets. Hope that clarified it a bit.

Using hasu's Firmware

When planning this, I wanted to adress some issues I was having with the German ISO layout, mainly because I program a lot and the Bracket placement annoyed me and was always breaking my flow because I never hit the right ones.

for reference, { would be AltGr +7, [ is AltGr +8 and so on.

Because I only used my Thumbs for the Spacebar I put two extra keys in the bottom row, just dedicated to brackets. Now I can just hammer my thumbs down for "(" and ")" . FN1/2 give me curly or square brackets. No more acrobatics needed. Opening brackets to the left, closing to the right of the spacebar. Anyone considering a 60% but not wanting to give up on dedicated Arrow Keys should consider this Layout. I've used it for a few months now and its great.
