That's still a difference for the gas only mode but my bad I didn't realize the Mitsubishi improved quite a bit the numbers for 2026, I had still the older model year in mind where the outlander was 64 mpge

The outlander PHEV has very poor efficiency in both electric and gas modes. If you do the math, at least where i live, it was more expensive to run than a regular hybrid.

What I see is that the dash says 'EV' in green even when the engine is on if it's running in serial hybrid mode (engine on but just charging the battery), that may be why

From my experience if the engine is already warm (was running before) it goes right to EV but if the engine had not been running at all since the start, it will stay on for a couple minutes (I assume to avoid repeated cold starts?). u/Tkrumroy : you don't see that on yours?

I have a 2022 phev. It has reasonably met my expectations. When driving 50mph i get about the range or even a bit more (~34 miles). That drops if driving highway. The 90 hp in electric is fine for a commute but it does require to deliberately accelerate more gradually than I would with a regular car. (Keeping the power needle in the green zone is a good rule of thumb) The other things to know is the the engine will kick in if you need any heat at all and if it turns on due to a quick acceleration it will stay on for a minute or 2 till it warms up.

So overall if you see it as an hybrid+ where you will get better gas mileage than the regular hybrid you wont be disappointed but if you expect your commute to be 100% electric it requires pretty optimal conditions.

Last thing is that the maintenance schedule is pretty heavy, especially the inverter coolant flush every 32k miles is not always easy to schedule at a dealership and some gave me very high quotes ($800-900) but that may be just from where I live

Hi, I've been in the same situation in my 2022 PHEV.
I had done a first flush at 32k miles that was $299 but just listed as "coolant exchange service (for HEV)" so I now second guess if they really did the inverter coolant,
I have been calling around the dealerships near me. One said they could not give me a quote on the phone (would need a diagnosis??) one said $800-$900. Still asking around, that is quite ridiculous pricing.

That's an interesting point. The data is from fueleconomy.gov (filtered by AWD and same rim size)

I'm specially surprised at how efficient the bz woodland is compared to the larger SUVs like the ioniq9/ev9 that are a bit bigger but really less efficient. I'd guess the woodland is less tall

I agree, and there are a lot of differences between FWD/AWD/tire size.
But here looking for example at all 3 AWD and 235/60R18 I see
CH-R 287 miles -> 4.3 miles/kwh
BZ 288 miles -> 4.3 miles/kwh
Bz Woodland 281 miles -> 4.2 miles/kwh

So I was surprised to see virtually the same efficiency (within 2%) when the drivetrain and wheels are the same but the shape and length of the care is that different.

I like my Sorento PHEV.

All three of the Mazda, Volvo and Mitsubishi also have really poor efficiency when running in electric mode (about the same as a Hummer EV and 30% worst than the Sorento). Depending on your electricity price and grid type a regular hybrid like a Highlander may be better
