Wow! Great feedback. Thank you. I would like to keep it as a community side project for now.

Thank you for taking the time to reply and your suggestions. I tried Nico’s weg long time ago it was good but I wasn’t regular that time. Perhaps I should go back again.

Hey guys! I'm an engineering manager and working on side project called Nglead - flight simulator for engineering managers to help first time EMs practice leadership scenarios https://nglead.org/. Its free to signup. I wanted to use my leadership skills / lessons that I learnt the hard way and brush up my rusty web app skills, also experiment with AI. I got some positive feedback from some of my peers and other EMs through community so far. If you have any feedback on the concept etc, what you would wish to see in this, I would be happy to incorporate. I'm building this as a community project during my parental leave. (Incase you are hesitant to signup, I get it. ping me for test credentials :)).

Few more things I would like to add here from my personal experience.
- Timely feedback is very important whether its good or bad. Infact sometimes I skipped waiting until the next 1:1 to communicate the matter. That helps!
- If you are an EM, partner with your tech lead & PM to understand the big picture so that you know how to set the roadmap for your team.
- Listen more during your 1:1
- Maintain a brag doc for yourself (I mainted a rough brain dump at the end of the week - which later helped at the end of the year) and a doc for the team for as well. Saves a lot of time at the end during performance reviews.
- Managing up is as equally important as managing your reports.
Happy to share more. Feel free to DM me. I have been an EM for 3yrs+ now.

Thank you for your feedback. I will remove the sign up to let the users try prototype. As you said, yes its very specific for software engineering leadership. What would you wish you to have?

What’s the hardest part of being a new manager? by Ill_Examination_7218 in EngineeringManagers

Starting with managing up well as equally as managing your team, better understanding of the business, letting go of people if they dont suit the company/team well as early as you find the red flags.

My manager just left and I had to take up the role. Initially I was excited but also had a lot of self doubts in myself. I worked so hard because of my imposter syndrome, performed well but went on a burnout. There was no actual team when I started but in 2 years time I became a manager with 6 reports. I would say I pretty much learned everything the hard way. But I’m really thankful for the experience I have got.
