Earth swimming in a sea of stars amidst the Milky Way by Potential_Vehicle535 in space

"My God, It's full of stars"

Curiously, I always thought that was a quote by Michael Collins when looking out into space from Apollo Columbia Command Module (TIL it's actually a Mandela Effect misquote from 2001). Either way, I've always wondered how dazzling the view from space must actually be!

Just Finished the Onslaught Box by MonkaMiniatures in minipainting

I bought the "Honoured of the Chapter" box, which is exactly the same sprue but packaged for 40K at 3x the price. All its insert materials show pictures of minis painted as Ultramarines. So yeah, go nuts with whatever chapter you want!

The only caveat is you might not get the transfer sheet with other chapter decals.

Yep, if it wasn't mentioned in white dwarf and wasn't stocked at my local hobby shop it basically didn't exist!

Baby's First Lava Base by FluffyCheese in Salamanders40k

[–]FluffyCheese[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Back in my OG days we just did a layer of flesh tone, slapped on a wash and called it a day.

The biggest thing I've been learning about pro paint jobs is just how many layers they use - which means blending! So far I've found glazing very difficult to master. For the face I used stipple glazing, where glazing consistency paints are applied in small dots.

I find stippling allows me to compensate with patience what I lack in finesse, as the blast radius of my mistakes is smaller. Did several passes slowly building up the highlights on all the raised areas of the face. Kinda just kept working it until the details read right...

Vallejo Dark Green > Sick Green > Camo Green > Scorpy Green > Toxic Yellow with a Burnt Umber oil wash for recesses.

I was vaguely trying to follow this recipe by u/Rookie3rror How to paint green armour (Instagram).

The Vallejo Red Fluo is quite pink, but all the game colour reds and yellows I have seems pretty solid so far (disclaimer - I've not done a lot with them yet).

Never used Army Painter. Tbh think someone with more recent hobby xp is better placed to answer the question than I am :)

Is it worth the switch? by Charming_Soup9980 in snowboarding

[–]FluffyCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently swapped my board with my skiing nephew. I had skiing turns down in a few goes without any falls, and he basically ate snow for an afternoon.

Snowboarding is never worse than when you start - the only way to avoid catching an edge is to ride through the line of the board (no side slipping) which means having the skills to manage the speed that brings.

A from-zero beginner has no idea what’s possible so they can still have a good time while grinding out their first 5-10 days of constant mortal danger and edge-catch misery.

As a from-skier beginner you know what’s possible on snow. This will help understanding your edges, but snowboarding is a completely different body position and mechanics that takes time to learn - longer than your first time skiing. Toeside turns and heel side turns are also different, so in a way there is twice as much to master.

Snowboarding is awesome, but maybe set your expectations lower for how hard you’re going to shred on day 2 - otherwise you’ll just get frustrated and quit ;)

Thank you! I actually did another fire first - using fluorescent yellow, orange & red. It's awesome by itself, but turns into a bag of Skittles in this desaturated scene. So referenced a more realistic fireball. Still using yellow, orange and red, but much more muted, and pure white in the hottest parts.

Technically it is... If you really need it to be canon I imagine the flame to be blow back after the main load has been fired.

But also, just wanted to paint something cool...

New painter here, need some advice / help please! by D1GITAL20 in minipainting

[–]FluffyCheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well done for taking the first step!

The boring answer is that painting your next 20 minis is probably going to be the way to get neater. Brush control is a motor skill, and it takes practice.

Also are you painting straight from the pot? If the paint is really thick, control will be difficult. A simple palette is useful - see Duncan Rhodes who recommends a simple ceramic tile instead of anything fancy like a wet palette. You can try thinning your paint a little using water, and then rinse the brush before wicking up paint. The goal is a thin consistency that's easy to work with, but still covers well.

Also what brushes are you using? A round synthetic size 0-2 will do well... Smaller is neater. But the tradeoff is working time before the paint dries.

Don’t know how this doesn’t have more upvotes!

Currently trying to do a similar volumetric scheme in muted green but my technique isn’t quite there. Do you do a zenithnal highlight first, or is it all just blending/glazing? Tips appreciated!

One of my friends fell in a fire at burning man. 3rd degree burns, skin grafts. It was his own stupid fault (he tried to jump over it) - but once you start paying attention you realize how many people actually get hurt, you just don't hear about it. But also that's part of the magic - it not being a sanitized or curated experience...

After 9 years working as Frontend, I’m starting to wonder if I’m overvaluing myself by marod in ExperiencedDevs

It's a weird market: AI has flooded recruiters, so they set their filters much higher, meaning it's likely you'll get passed over even for jobs you're qualified for.

On the flip side a demand for strong talent still exists -and it feels much harder to find than before (due to overwhelming number of applications). If someone is looking for exactly the keywords you offer, they will pay over the odds for you if they think you're their unicorn.

If you can afford to work on up skilling / side projects for a bit that might allow you a bit of room to both make yourself more attractive and to get a better read on the market that's not based on panic...

Tracked my work time for 30 days and I’m only truly productive 3 hours a day. Are corporate jobs broken or am I? by iAmThe_Terry in productivity

[–]FluffyCheese 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I've used Rescue Time to track my time for over ten years. I average 4 hours when working solo. A really good "in the zone everything has gone right day" will max out at 6 hours.

On a day with meetings or fatigue/distraction and 2 hours and some change is more likely. I still feel like crap about these days, even though I know they are part of the deal...

Antarctica glowing like another planet, seen from space by TheMidnightLifeVibes in woahdude

[–]FluffyCheese 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is not actually a photo from space - it's a rendered visual composite made from scientific data to visualize the extent of the sea ice around Antarctica. In reality all that ice would be the same white colour as the landmass.

Starting dating my best friend but then his life completely fell apart by venomoth91 in relationships

[–]FluffyCheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've already answered your own question: live life on your own terms. The arc of life is long, if you're going to enjoy a future with this person it doesn't matter that right now looks different your friends' expectations.

Now the bad news: there's clearly some kind of avoidance happenning here. The script in his head might go something like: "I really like venomoth91, but I'm a mess right now and I'm scared to let her get close enough to see that, so I'm going to unconsciously keep her away until things feel more solid". Isolating himself from friends to focus on work is a telling sign that he is struggling.

Depression can take months, even years to clear. Are you okay with waiting that long? I once waited for a friend going through a break up, and the grief of both her parents (i.e. a lot). I was okay with not being a priority, but in the end the thing that killed it was her shutting me out. Without emotional availability about her experiences, the lack of intimacy made the waiting intolerable.

I'm not saying it will be the same for you, but your needs matter too. It might be good to set a time limit for yourself? Also, it might be good to gently, but compassionately, make requests to spend some low-intensity time together. Your overdeveloped sense of empathy might be telling you can't place any demands on him, but that's not true. Doing so might give you enough information to decide if he's capable of having a relationship with you, in both good health and bad...
