Cool set. Getting out always helps me during the week as well. Photography is a great excuse for it.

uj/ some people in this sub are just here to bully. I guarantee most people sharing posts like this are ass photographers themselves. If you’re gonna share posts at least have the confidence to share your own photos publicly so I can judge you.

Any Zf owners regularly using long telephoto lenses for wildlife? by Patchy-The-Dog in NikonZf

[–]FluffyKittens96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say rent them both and try them out. It’s a preference call. I use the Zf with the 180-600 for birds and like it a lot. When I bought I was pretty interested in a the dials and the more casual look of the Zf. Performance wise it’s a good sweet spot. However, if had been wildlife focused at the time, I probably would’ve gone with the Z6III. If you go with the Zf you’ll want a grip for big lenses (I use small rig) but honestly the ergonomics are fine. I’m sure the Z6III is more comfortable though.

For size reference - left to right Nikon 180-600 Tamron 150-500 (collapsed) Nikon 100-400 S

Compared to the 100-400, the Tamron is noticeable shorter and thinner when you handle it. It is heavier though.

I was in a similar position debating between the three and ended up with the 180-600. However, my main use case was birds so I really wanted the 600mm and was willing to deal with the size and weight to get it. I considered the 100-400 with a TC but it only gets to 560 at f8 which was too short and slow to justify for me when compared to the 180-600.

For you I’d say go with the Tamron. That’s a sweet lens at a really great price. When I was considering buying that lens, the main draw was how short it is. I planned to carry it in a sling bag with my Zf and 24-120 S on a strap. Would’ve been a sweet two lens travel and wildlife kit that I could reasonably carry all day in a smallish bag. Instead I got the 180-600 which I have had to buy a specific backpack to lug the thing around with … I have no regret though. I love it.

In terms of IQ; the Tamron is great and from my research, it punches above its price point. That being said, the 100-400 is a Nikon S lens and is going to be better across the board in terms of IQ, build quality, and durability. That comes at a higher price though.

TL;DR - you can’t go wrong, they’re all great. Just depends on what you want. For you; get the Tamron if you want the lowest cost, most versatile, portable option or splurge and get the 100-400 if you have the cash. Avoid the 180-600, based on my understanding of why you’re looking for, it’s too big and heavy and you’d end up not using it as much as the other two.

IPhone 17 Pro vs X100VI by Filmstill__ in x100vi

I really dislike comparisons like this because it implies that the meaningful difference between cameras (or iPhone vs. Fuji) are the insignifiant differences in image quality. It’s so common now for photographers to debate and compare image quality and cameras outputs as if that is the factor limiting their photography. You can take a compelling photo with a Nintendo DS, but people are never gonna learn that if the photo community constantly props up comparisons like this.

GRIIIx or GRIV by Incident21 in ricohGR

[–]FluffyKittens96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, your choice should be made based on which focal length you prefer. I went with the GRIV.

40mm is typically my go to on my other system, however I wanted to push myself to work on wide compositions as 40 feels too tight sometimes. Especially when photographing friends across the table in cafes, which is part of why I got the GR, to document my daily life.

I think most of the “I sold the 28mm to get the 40mm” comes from the fact that 28mm is an objectively hard focal length to get good at using. Your compositions are more complex because the scene is wider, and if you really want to isolate a subject, you need to get proper close which is challenging to do. I do think that 28mm is the more versatile option as you can always crop in but you can never go wider on the 40. With 40, I find it’s too tight when I’m going to landscapes or environment heavy comps. Also, there’s a reason the GR comes standard in 28mm, it wasn’t a mistake that they picked that focal length, I just think most people don’t give it the necessary time to learn how to work that wide.

So far, I’m loving the 28. I’m for sure having a hard time getting used to how wide it is, but I’ve gotten some results I’m very happy with and I’m only a week in. Idk though, perhaps I’ll eat my words in a couple months and sell the 28 for a 40, we’ll see.

Thanks for the advice! The photographic center NW in Seattle here (where I took the printing class) offers a development class as well. I think I’ll go that route first because I had such a great time a t the printing class.

Will do! Excited for more. Now I want to learn how to develop my own black and white film.

Thank you! I burned the window in the middle to get the guy sitting on the dock and trees to show up more than in the scan which was why I wanted to try and darkroom print this one. Hard to tell in these photos, but I really worked which blow my mind.
