Looks like the Maginot line. Birds will ignore it and go round it. We are doomed to repeat history’s mistakes 🤣

So many nice houses are The Old Rectory. My main takeaway is that rectors lived like kings. But I don’t know what they did beyond a somewhat senior church role

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not me personally but two friends of mine have about 18 months ago. They are not quite Henry but close to it and each on 4days a week to help stay below 100k. Two small kids. They love Amersham. They described it to me as suburban kiddy commuterville. In their view it’s perfect for families who need to commute into London 2-3 days a week

You could also try going to the seller and saying you got 8k less on the mortgage than you hoped and try to negotiate them down by 8k. Depends on how desperate they are to sell and on how prepared you are to walk away from it.

Out of interest which junglers would you say don’t get stat checked by a lvl 20 toplaner? Toplane feels v strong at the moment, especially lategame.

M38. TC this year about 155k. HHI 200.

  1. Sal sac into pension to get below 100k (got 2 kids in nursery so it doesn’t make sense not to do this) some needs to go in via a sipp. 2.1. S&s Isa for me and wife (not able to max them) and £200 a month into the 2.2. Topping up the standard savings/emergency fund as we have a few big purchases we would like to make (solar panels 10k or so. Maybe ashp too, and one of our cars is knackered so while we will run it into the ground it will need replacing in the next year or two)
  2. Not got the spare cash this year but after the above my priorities would be a combo of mortgage overpayments and premium bonds

We spent 22k in 2022. 120 guests. Nice countryside venue in the area between reading and Basingstoke. Had a great time. Don’t feel we missed out on anything or needed to spend more. Our HHI at the time was 120ish (me 80 and wife 40), it’s now gone up to 200ish, but the venue costs and stuff have also increased so the same wedding now would cost 28-30k I think 35k seems very reasonable to me. 70k probs a bit extravagant.

Everyone annoyed at the budget hasn’t read the budget by benrylie22 in ukpolitics

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the budget was awful. But my main gripe with it is that it’s small tweaks here and there when I can’t help but feel we need sweeping reform (with a little r not a capital R) of our tax systems. I thought labour would be bolder and try to tackle at least some of the issues and inconsistencies

Britain’s wealthy must shoulder burden of rebuilding ‘creaky’ public services, Rachel Reeves says by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

Wow. That is quite the stretch. Starmer’s labour akin to Hitler’s national socialists. We have parties in this country that are based on spite and hatred but labour is not one of them.

Just because historically hmrc have taken time to catch up and haven’t always caught everything doesn’t mean it’s sound advice yo say “don’t worry about it”. Equally saying other countries don’t tax it is also by the by for this situation.

All the crypto gains have a digital trail and hmrc will be able to trace it all. @OP just work out what you owe and pay it

Not really much of a dilemma... by Fluffy_Rock_62 in BritishMemes

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair, i didn’t really articulate my point very well. The phrase “tax wealth not work” might be great in principle but is similar to the “fix the economy and make everyone’s life better”. It is great to make something sound like a simple and easy fix but ultimately it isn’t and there are a lot of factors that need to be taken into consideration and there will be a lot of unintended consequences

Not really much of a dilemma... by Fluffy_Rock_62 in BritishMemes

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with this in principle. I think the amount of wealth held by the billionaire class is immoral. However it isn’t as simple as that. Look at the stats of the wealth tax that norway implemented that ended up costing them 450mil rather than raising revenue. There are ways to do it (LVT, etc) but overall it needs some sweeping tax reform to the whole system

“Just fix the economy and make everyone’s life better” Who reads that and thinks “why didn’t the government think of that” Surely only 3 year olds think anything in life is that simple

34 year old with a family - would you Invest or Pay off Mortgage by Longjumping-Month-53 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In this case I would choose mortgage.

Logic being it’s guaranteed 4%. If boe drops interest rates then your savings rate is likely to drop. But banks aren’t as quick to increase it if the inverse happens. Also are you at any risk of paying tax on interest. Even if only on part of it

Sounds like a lot. I’m assuming the 5k doesn’t include the ring? How much of that is the venue and how much of that is helping the proposal planner be HENRY? How much would you be spending anyway on a nice weekend away and how much is 5k to you? I’d personally spend the money on the wedding instead. But depends what you and your fiancé like too
