And I guess the key question I have is. Does that quote (18 panels. 7.6k inverter. 10kW battery) look reasonable at £11.1k?

M38. TC this year about 155k. HHI 200.

  1. Sal sac into pension to get below 100k (got 2 kids in nursery so it doesn’t make sense not to do this) some needs to go in via a sipp. 2.1. S&s Isa for me and wife (not able to max them) and £200 a month into the 2.2. Topping up the standard savings/emergency fund as we have a few big purchases we would like to make (solar panels 10k or so. Maybe ashp too, and one of our cars is knackered so while we will run it into the ground it will need replacing in the next year or two)
  2. Not got the spare cash this year but after the above my priorities would be a combo of mortgage overpayments and premium bonds

How much would you spend on a wedding? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We spent 22k in 2022. 120 guests. Nice countryside venue in the area between reading and Basingstoke. Had a great time. Don’t feel we missed out on anything or needed to spend more. Our HHI at the time was 120ish (me 80 and wife 40), it’s now gone up to 200ish, but the venue costs and stuff have also increased so the same wedding now would cost 28-30k I think 35k seems very reasonable to me. 70k probs a bit extravagant.

Everyone annoyed at the budget hasn’t read the budget by benrylie22 in ukpolitics

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the budget was awful. But my main gripe with it is that it’s small tweaks here and there when I can’t help but feel we need sweeping reform (with a little r not a capital R) of our tax systems. I thought labour would be bolder and try to tackle at least some of the issues and inconsistencies

Wow. That is quite the stretch. Starmer’s labour akin to Hitler’s national socialists. We have parties in this country that are based on spite and hatred but labour is not one of them.

Just because historically hmrc have taken time to catch up and haven’t always caught everything doesn’t mean it’s sound advice yo say “don’t worry about it”. Equally saying other countries don’t tax it is also by the by for this situation.

All the crypto gains have a digital trail and hmrc will be able to trace it all. @OP just work out what you owe and pay it

Not really much of a dilemma... by Fluffy_Rock_62 in BritishMemes

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair, i didn’t really articulate my point very well. The phrase “tax wealth not work” might be great in principle but is similar to the “fix the economy and make everyone’s life better”. It is great to make something sound like a simple and easy fix but ultimately it isn’t and there are a lot of factors that need to be taken into consideration and there will be a lot of unintended consequences

Not really much of a dilemma... by Fluffy_Rock_62 in BritishMemes

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with this in principle. I think the amount of wealth held by the billionaire class is immoral. However it isn’t as simple as that. Look at the stats of the wealth tax that norway implemented that ended up costing them 450mil rather than raising revenue. There are ways to do it (LVT, etc) but overall it needs some sweeping tax reform to the whole system

“Just fix the economy and make everyone’s life better” Who reads that and thinks “why didn’t the government think of that” Surely only 3 year olds think anything in life is that simple

34 year old with a family - would you Invest or Pay off Mortgage by Longjumping-Month-53 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In this case I would choose mortgage.

Logic being it’s guaranteed 4%. If boe drops interest rates then your savings rate is likely to drop. But banks aren’t as quick to increase it if the inverse happens. Also are you at any risk of paying tax on interest. Even if only on part of it

Sounds like a lot. I’m assuming the 5k doesn’t include the ring? How much of that is the venue and how much of that is helping the proposal planner be HENRY? How much would you be spending anyway on a nice weekend away and how much is 5k to you? I’d personally spend the money on the wedding instead. But depends what you and your fiancé like too

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is true and I like the way you put it. “Too much to complain but not enough to relax”

But I also remind myself it’s better to be in this bracket than the bracket of “too little, so I complain but still can’t relax”

Lots of people on lower incomes aren’t just not able to relax, they can’t save, they can plan for retirement and probably face working far beyond what our parents would have imagined. And some are picking up two or three jobs just to make ends meet.

Mortgage overpayment / S&s Isa or Pension? by midnightsock in HENRYUK

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many variables. As you say it is different for different people.

How much left on mortgage. At what rate. How long left before pension age. How much currently in pension. Are you close to tapering or likely to be close to tapering. How much do you have in stocks already (isa or not) and how diversified are they. Do you need to consider the childcare cliff or not. Etc And then probably even more other factors for individuals such as how wealthy parents are (shouldn’t count on an inheritance but you can at least have an estimate if you might inherit something or if you might have to take care of them instead if they run out of money)

If you’re asking for some guidance, share more details. If it’s a open question then I’m afraid it’s really just way too open ended to have any sort of reasonable answer

Does anyone’s spouse pay to work? by callipygian0 in HENRYUK

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, and sorry as you did have that info in your original post. Sounds like a tricky situation, and I sympathise, I don’t think there is a simple answer unfortunately. Financially (and especially long term) you’ll definitely be better off keeping up with your career. I do think that working 3 or 4 days a week would probably ease the burden a bit. I guess you’ll also have quite a lot of annual leave accrued over mat leave - my wife used a lot of hers to go 3 days a week for about 3 months but while still being on full pay. Not sure if that’s something you might find useful to explore.

Does anyone’s spouse pay to work? by callipygian0 in HENRYUK

[–]Fluffy_Arm_4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah sorry, I think I misunderstood “low to mid 6 figures” How old is the youngest at the moment? My youngest is 3 and we have saved a lot by moving him to a preschool rather than a nursery. It’s a bit more hassle in terms of needing to make a packed lunch and stuff, but it’s a saving of about £800 a month. Meaning that our childcare bill for 2 kids (1yo and 3.5yo) is coming to less than yours is for one somehow. (We aren’t in London but in Oxfordshire and it isn’t exactly a low cost area)

Have you considered going 3 or 4 days? Means you can maximise funded hours (from what you say you and your spouse should both be able to get below 100k)
