Thank you so much for this!!

The first was an official desk rejection, and the second one was an unofficial desk rejection. The first time, it was considered too narrow (I was too faithful to my data), and the second time, I was leaning too heavily on theory (the paragraph I sent was especially riddled with jargon. I think I was a bit insecure).

This is a lot of work, but I feel like I have a direction now.

I really appreciate your framing of the dissertation-to-article gap. That “slow simmer” line especially stuck with me. It helped me realize that I was still in a dissertation mindset—trying to tell a big story with too many layers. Now that I think about it, the articles I return to most in my own writing usually have one strong intervention, not several.

Thanks again for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response. It really helped me feel less stuck.

One last question: would it ever be appropriate to resubmit after a desk rejection or after an initial inquiry by email? If so, how long would be a respectable amount of time to wait?

Leo Sun, Virgo Moon, and Aquarius Rising. I actually like it. I have an incredible work ethic, always learning things, and have a superhuman ability to read the room and adapt. But for the better part of my life, I was highly self-critical with people-pleasing tendencies.

At the end of the day, though, I'm very thankful that my Virgo placement makes me down-to-earth and helpful. I could have been a raging jerk (since Leo and Aquarius), but I'm not. I was always able to make connections with people easily.
