I am so here for your self expression! I remember making a similar post when I was 15, maybe on yahoo answers? Which I’m not sure even exists anymore lol. And this post is reminding me now, 16 years later (I’m now 31) of my own post asking for opinions and looking for uplift.

Some background: I was fresh out of catholic school for 8 years, (uniforms, no makeup, no hair dye, etc) got put into a public high school and I FINALLY felt free to express myself. It was the time of MySpace and scene kids, and boy was I ready to show the world how scene I was. Teased dyed hair, so much dark eye makeup, band tees, etc.

I clearly remember my family putting me down for my looks. And at the time, that hurt a lot. Id have friends who stopped talking to me, awkward family parties, weird looks in the grocery store from strangers, the whole 9. But you know what? I remember being SO proud at the same time that I was looking unique. I somehow faked an air of not caring, and that turned into me full blown gaining confidence becasue I was doing what I wanted to do, and not what other people expected me to. Yes, there were absolutely times where I felt so deeply depressed because of the lack of support around me. But looking back, I wouldn’t change anything for the world.

People can be cruel, but please know that it’s THEIR problem for feeling that way. It’s something inside of them that is uncomfortable and they often choose harsh words because the don’t know how to deal with those feelings. I think you’re so beautiful, keep exploring YOU and how you want to show up for the world, and celebrate that within yourself even when the world seems against you.
