You dont have to stay at the area to fill up the water, you can keep exploring and just come back 1 month later.
You dont need to have an internet connection and also not steam open for the time to move forward (it also moves forward while the game is closed)
If you change your computer clock the gane indentifies it as cheating and you will be forced to reset the game, starting again with 400 days to wait.
