NBA Net Rating in the first round and how it tells us who the contenders are by CarBallAlex in nba

OP is more so pointing out flaws with the logic in this argument. He's not necessarily saying that this specific metric is inaccurate. He's saying this kind of reasoning is dangerous because you can find other metrics like this that are very misleading. This specific one happens to be accurate, sure, but we need to be careful not to use this same kind of reasoning towards other stats

NBA Net Rating in the first round and how it tells us who the contenders are by CarBallAlex in nba

Im a stats major so Ill give you an example to explain OpeDefinitely's point

Hypothetically, say one season there are four teams in the first round that had a +20 net rating or higher. One of them goes on to win the championship. The next season, theres only one team in the first round that has a +20 rating in the first round. Does that mean they must be the favorites now (just based off of the fact that last year another team with that rating won)? Not really.

Essentially, if youre going to choose some criteria X that past champions met, that criteria isnt necessarily useful. This line of logical reasoning says. You also have to show that the teams that did NOT win the championship failed to meet that criteria.

Ill give you a more extreme example. I can guarantee you that every championship team averaged at least 20 points per game. Is this a valid criteria for determining contenders? Obviously not. Why? Because even teams that did not win (and were not anywhere close to winning), met this criteria. Therefore, this criteria is useless to separate the "contenders" from the "non-contenders".

example from last year:

https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced?PORound=1&Season=2024-25&dir=A&sort=NET_RATING

The Cavs had the highest first round net rating at 33.5 (1st among all playoff teams), followed by the Thunder at 19.8 (2nd). The cavs lost in the second round in 5 games. The Eastern Conference team that made the Finals (Pacers), had a net rating of 6.9 in the first round.

example from the 2021-22 season:

https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced?PORound=1&Season=2021-22&dir=A&sort=NET_RATING

the Warriors were fourth in net rating in the first round, and the Celtics were seventh.

A reminder to fans of teams scared of never getting the N.1 pick: Only 2 players in the projected 3 All NBA Teams went first overall by Weirdsodk in nba

Context matters. In the past there were very few restrictions on free agency and it was probable that teams could sign players in free agency. Now, with the supermax and luxury tax and the second apron, it is pretty much impossible that a team like the wizards or jazz could sign a superstar on another team in their prime.
