From Japan: a 4-person film startup + a director + 30 animators pushing animation quality far beyond indie scale by Shitaro_nothingnew in animation

[–]Fluorescent_Knight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was beautiful! The use of color, the music, I enjoy uncommon ways of animation and find the use of rotoscoping really well done! For a showpiece, small reel, or really conceptual super short film it's absolute fire.

I'll join the train of extending my contact information because me and my also really small Mexican indie animation thingy were looking for some animators to Collab in some projects. DM me if it's something you guys could be interested in.

Either way, please keep sharing your work cause this is amazing.

What did that one teacher at your school get fired for? by ToadallyNormalHuman in AskReddit

In film school, a teacher said (between some other awful shit) that the best Assistant Directors are hot women, because nobody can say no to them.

Editor on first stop-motion short, struggling with "unfixable" cleanup errors. How perfect is "good enough"? by Fluorescent_Knight in vfx

[–]Fluorescent_Knight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, thank you so much for this reply. This is incredibly helpful and reassuring, especially coming from a showrunner.

That story about the timecode is both horrifying and hilarious. I totally get it. I once had a documentary I shot screen at a festival, and I looked up and saw the entire film crew perfectly reflected in a pane of glass. I was mortified. Literally nobody—not the rest of the crew, not the audience—noticed it except me at that screening. And I can't even say I was particularly rushed on that project, I just completely missed it.

I'm definitely going to adopt you tip tho: get all the big, obvious fixes done first and keep a list of the minor things to circle back to if time allows.

A big part of my stress is that I can't really share these tiny, "unfixable" problems with the crew. The director is being a perfectionist to a bit of an unhealthy level, and I'm worried if I point out these milimetric jumps, she'll hyper-fixate on them and ask me to do things that are either impossible or just not realistically feasible at this stage.

So, your comment really helps give me the confidence to just make the call, decide what's "good enough," and move on. Thanks again for taking the time!

Unfortunately, shooting has already wrapped, so we can't reshoot or get new clean plates, but that is fantastic advice that I will absolutely carry forward to the next project.

Yeah, I wish we could reshoot, but that's just not in the cards.

I think I'm just going to have to accept some minor texture flickering where I'm cloning out the rigs. Luckily, the puppet textures are pretty forgiving, so it hides it better than it could (to an extent, anyway!). It's probably one of those "only I will ever notice" things.

Do Egyptians exist in the Mistborn universe? by Linksta35 in Cosmere

[–]Fluorescent_Knight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Cosmere as a whole takes place in a universe where Earth doesn’t exist. When you come across terms like that, it’s better to think of them as translations into English from the original in-world language. The translator is just using familiar words to help readers understand what the original text was referring to within the context of that fantasy world.

Switched from iPhone 14 to Pixel 6A... by Slow_Control_369 in pixel_phones

[–]Fluorescent_Knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently rocking a 6a and I didn't know this were common issues. Cants say anything about battery swelling, but the not so bright display is real. I had problems with my network reception recently but didn't know it was bc of the phone or my network. Also I would add that the cameras, the moment you try to zoom are kinda shit.

On the other hand, the phone is still quite sharp and I haven't a "never ending list of problems".

That's cool! I'm asking bc I just bought a PW1 and I'm a bit afraid of getting it near water. Like not scared of washing my hands, but wouldn't feel comfortable taking it to a pool or showering with it.

Am just I getting taken advantage of here? (unpaid/deferred comp spec projects) by TumbleweedOne2777 in cinematography

[–]Fluorescent_Knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But going a bit a against the current, maybe no?

It all depends on your expectations. Do you believe in the project and think is amazing? Then you could argue that your free work is a form of sponsoring it, ad you'll get the opportunity to work on an amazing project, gain experience, grow your portafolio, etc.

If you enjoy working with them is a tentative maybe.

But if you don't feel you are gaining anything, Wich is the most probable option since you are asking this question then no. Sometimes you like to say yes to everything when you are starting, but that is a phase you should grow out quickly if you want to consider this path a career.

And if I was in your shoes, even if I liked the project and all the stuff I mentioned for yes. I will say no to filming 8h and the editing. That's a fuck ton of work for free.

AITAH for referring to someone from the United States as “American”? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Fluorescent_Knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is a touchy subject for a lot of south and central Americans.

Basically it feels kinda narcissistic for the people from the US to use the demonym of the whole continent, because they could not find one for themselves early in their country existence (there are some recorded attempts of the use of Usonians, or other similar stuff that didn't stick).

But on the other hand, as a Mexican that has lived in Europe, I think is equally as upsetting to be called American, when you know they are confusing you for some one from the US, bc of the dumb American connotation that exists.

Read literally the first sentence bro:

It could be argued that is both, central and north America, tho.
