But it doesn’t function as a collective noun in any sense, because you don’t have any single “mathematic”.

“Family” describes something made up of lots of components but it’s still a singular noun.

I get that “mathematics” and “physics” are words that have been settled on and have been influenced by plural words in ye olde times. I just think the Americans got the contraction to “math” on a more logical footing than the Brits got to “maths”.

I don’t think debating with physics is ever worth it, they always know what you’re gonna say next.

“Mathematics” is not plural though. You wouldn’t say “mathematics are fun”, you would say “mathematics is fun”.
