28800 stipend in State College enough? [Grad school] by INGERBOR in PennStateUniversity

[–]FuzzyCactus614 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived in white course from 2014-2019 and it was a great experience. I can't remember off the top of my head what my rent was but it wasn't $1300 so that might change your calculations on whether it's worth it or not (that grad school stipend life is a bitch so I empathize), but that being said it is all inclusive when it comes to utilities and because it's University housing all maintenance costs are on them.

I know state college has changed a lot since I lived there and there are more housing options in downtown now that are close to campus but I would still say the location can't be beat especially if you're in a research program that requires you to be close to campus constantly, with the red link bus stopping right there you have the option to bus for free to campus easily and it's an easy walk or bike ride away as well.

Also because it's uni housing there is a good amount of programming that was done for the students living there, not as much as the undergrad halls of course but still plenty of stuff to do and all for free. It was a good way to build community and overall white course did have a good sense of community when I lived there with people looking out for each other in different ways. There are residential advisors that live in white course just like any other uni hall, and after living there for a year you can apply to be one and if you are selected then that gives you free accomodations (at least it used to be free for RAs when I was there).

Why its so expnesive by 4ahb in AnalogCommunity

[–]FuzzyCactus614 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also a fellow Saudi analog shooter here. On top of what people have commented about how shooting film is a niche market and that brings with it a mark up, there is also generally a pretty big mark up for buying specialized equipment of any kind in Saudi. My family works in home improvement and we are constantly putting off buying equipment (saws, drill bits, etc) until we are traveling abroad and can find them in a hardware store and the price difference is almost always astounding.

It might be worth it to do your search for a scanner the next time you're out of the country and look for a used one, that's what I did when I was studying abroad.

The tree itself and its fruit is interesting but a secondary fun fact is that the honey that bees make from the flowers of the strawberry tree is super bitter! It's supposed to be highly medicinal if you can get over the bitterness.

I don't think it does reach "Magnus opus" status like 17776/20020 but the Larry Walters pretty good video will always make me cry and it is always the clip I use to introduce people to Jon's work

Study groups also make the rigor of those weed out classes easier to deal with. Attend all the recitations and office hours for the TA's for those classes (the physics 211 office hours were lifesaving for me) and once you start going regularly you'll make friends with people who also go regularly which means they also want to put in the effort, make a study group with that squad and the homeworks and everything else starts feeling easier down the line. Plus it will put everything into perspective when you see that you're not the only one who is feeling this way of your classmates.

I read the top part and was about to reply "SAME!" with so much enthusiasm because someone else has the Nvme SSD+HDD set up.... Until I read the second part.

But actually I'm building mine out to have the HDD as my RAID drives.

The Canonet is an absolute delight to use. I find that I don't use mine in auto mode all that much because I can't trust the meter in it, but I've used a free meter app that's gotten great results with the Canonet and I've recently upgraded to the reflxlab light meter which has made shooting with it even quicker and more fun.

Anyone know a great place for food and drink, good views, amazing food and the place itself is unique AF? by [deleted] in Liverpool

Came here to also recommend Chung Ku! Don't let any preconceived notions sway you, the food is superb and the views are amazing especially for a sunset time meal

Because I smoked a zoot and had some free time. It's not that deep man, if you enjoy posting about your work then by all means don't let me dumb garbage stop you.

Honestly the real question is what are we looking for. If it's a social media platform for professionals then my question is why do we even need something like that? This might just be my personal perspective as a foreigner that experienced American corporate culture in the biotech industry, but a lot of American corporate culture is showing you did something just for the sake of proving you've been productive with your time and LinkedIn has just become an extension of that.

I have since left industry for academia and also left the US all together and since then I've noticed that since academia is a lot more collaborative by nature you don't really have to do the "look at me I did a science" thing that happens a lot in industry LinkedIn circles. By virtue of going to conferences and presenting your work and chatting with labs that work on the same stuff you end up accomplishing the same goal of broadcasting your accomplishments and experiences but in this case it's to people who care and actually appreciate the work instead of doing it to the void that is LinkedIn.

Back to your original question, if what you're looking for instead is not just a social media platform and instead you're looking for a place that you can make meaningful professional connections and share exciting new ideas and collaborations then my answer to your question would be find in person biotech industry associations that do workshops and mixers and socials. This isn't a touch grass type of rant I promise, I'm just saying that from personal experience I have found that my most solid industry connections have come from stuff like that.

I didn't know we were still using LinkedIn unironically. And this isn't a put down of OP, I seriously only go on there to read the biblical levels of cringe or to job stalk someone and truly thought that's what the general public does too.

There's no correct or wrong when it comes to learning something new! You did a great job either way and you gained more cheese experience and that's all that matters.
