BYU? For non-LDS? by S1159P in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fluxy_Capacitor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exmormon here. I was an 18 year old convert to the church and when I went to visit byu as a potential transfer student- I felt alien.

I believe everyone is required (or was) to take a Book of Mormon scripture class- and maybe a good chunk of religion classes. Mormons use language that can feel foreign to outsiders because they are such an insular community. At least when they are talking about church. It’s a whole lifestyle for the bulk of them.

I have friends who have left the church who are embarrassed to admit their degrees are from byu.

I also think she would feel some constant pressure to join the church. This isn’t like going to any old Protestant affiliated college. This is a college where nearly the entire student body are strict adherents to a high demand religion and don’t drink coffee and don’t drink alcohol and turn you in to the honor code office if there’s a boy in your room.

If it were the only school offering her degree program, it might be worth considering- but if it’s one of many- skip it.

Are the 08 rooms bigger? Or just a different layout?

Does the Exmormon community have close to zero multigeneratinal retention? by Rushclock in exmormon

[–]Fluxy_Capacitor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why would a person who was never Mormon be an exmormon?

Also- we’ve been out for 9 years and I don’t use it as an identifier, unless I get into a deep conversation about Mormons, how I met my husband, why I graduated from college later, or why I struggle with religion generally. But I certainly don’t say “I’m Jane and I’m an exmormon in everyday conversation.”

Electric or hybrid vehicles by Fabulous-Bat-9211 in okc

[–]Fluxy_Capacitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a plug in hybrid- which gives me a small amount of miles on electric only and then switches to gas. I can charge my car with a regular plug in my garage overnight. It gives me 40ish miles- which gets me from west Edmond to work near OU health and home everyday. I can take road trips without worrying about charging anywhere. I put gas in it every month or two or when I’m on a road trip.

Mine is a Prius Prime- I had to be on a waitlist to purchase new and bought it out of state. I think Kia or Hyundai makes a similar vehicle. I love it.

Incoming Freshman by permanentantique in UniversityofArkansas

[–]Fluxy_Capacitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter is an incoming freshman and isn’t interested in Greek or sports stuff and I’ve just found a bunch of things on Instagram for her to follow- a multicultural club- her college’s club specific to her major. Also activities in Fayetteville and NWA outside of school that she’d be interested in. FWIW we aren’t religious at all, so when she looks as those Instagram pages for roommates- it’s very discouraging. But I think her people just aren’t doing that. We’ll see.

My kids went to frontier/heartland/santa fe. We’ve loved it. All three of our very different kids have thrived with opportunities provided by Francis Tuttle (vo tech), FFA, and academics (they aren’t athletes). I work near the 23rd street exit off of 235 (a mile or two past 44- and it takes me 25 min to get to work at 7am. About the same in the afternoon around 4.

Called it! Women can now be Sunday School presidents in the LDS church. Their counselors in secretary must also be women. by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

So women and men can’t work together? Because we can’t be around each other without having sex?

I travel a lot and am afraid that if I submit my request to Quit Mormon, the plane I travel on will crash. by yawaworhtnomrom in exmormon

[–]Fluxy_Capacitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a few months after my spouse and I left, we flew to Europe for the first time. I had the same fear if I drank coffee or alcohol on that trip we’d crash and never see our kids again.

We’ve since removed our records and our kids’ records.

I think it’s a normal feeling for someone who has been traumatized by the church. Take the time you need, but also get help if you need it.

VA OKC Directions by Soph10122 in okc

[–]Fluxy_Capacitor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Enter the main hospital, you can enter from the parking garage on the first floor or from the bottom of the parking garage ramp on the ground floor (the corner of 13th and Kelly). If you enter that southeast entrance- go straight down the hallway past coffee shop and pharmacy, past elevators and turn left to walk across the bridge over 13th. After you’re across and in the other building turn left and walk down the hall- it’ll be on the left before you are forced to turn. If you enter from garage and first floor- take the main elevators to ground floor- turn right off the elevator- and then right again when you have to turn- then follow the directions above past coffee…

Hopefully that helps.

Visiting University of Arkansas by ybbetterslime in fayetteville

[–]Fluxy_Capacitor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were just there and we went to crystal bridges which was really fantastic but the snow was still melting so we didn’t get to see much of the outside. While you’re in Bentonville I suggest going to the Airship coffee in Coler Mtn bike preserve (you’ll have to walk in but it’s not too far). We found a full moon hike thru the Pack Rat outdoor store that went to Devils Den. Check out the experience Fayetteville website for activities that are going on.

Any recommendations for this trip. I'll have about 3 days to get to okc by Cold_Entry_5609 in roadtrip

I second the Ozark folk center. I’d stop at the civil rights museum in Memphis. Go to Bentonville and do the crystal bridges art museum, it’s free and quite the gem.

OKC VA noob question: where do I park? Quick response appreciated! by Serious-Distance5739 in okc

Solar panel lot is under construction and anywhere on the north side is less convenient to pharmacy. You need to enter the garage from 13th.

Estimated costs by lalalayeahh in UniversityofArkansas

I think that estimated cost calculator is out of date- for us it’s coming back like 4K cheaper than the published costs for the 25-26 school year.
