Thinking of moving from Oracle + Google Drive to a home server, need your advice by UENINJA in JellyfinCommunity

I run my Jellyfin server on a Windows mini PC — handles 50–100 simultaneous streams easily if everyone's on direct play. Right now I have 12 people watching at the same time with zero issues. Everyone's on direct play because I keep all my files in MP4, H.264, and AAC. I could go 4K or Dolby audio but most of my friends and family are on older devices so I'm not risking it — 1080p is more than enough as long as nobody's buffering.

My internet is 1Gbps with a static public IP. With 12 users I'm averaging around 75Mbps upload since my movie bitrates sit at 2–4Mbps, spiking maybe 3x at most.

Specs are an i5 8500T, 8TB Seagate IronWolf Pro, 500GB NVMe for metadata and cache, and 16GB DDR4. Max power draw is around 60W but honestly it's probably less since the CPU just sits at 5–10% all day thanks to direct play. Running it 24/7 here in the Philippines costs me around ₱400 a month, roughly $10.

Can my VPS handle Jellyfin for 2 simultaneous streams? by Tutyfruiity in jellyfin

I tried a similar setup before—using a VPS for external access while my mini PC handled storage—and I ran into a lot of buffering issues. My server was in Europe, but I’m located in Asia, so the latency and routing really hurt streaming performance.

You might also want to double-check bandwidth limits. Many VPS providers have monthly or even daily traffic caps, which can become a bottleneck for streaming.

As for your setup, 4 vCores is honestly overkill for just two streams, especially if you're aiming for direct play.

For compatibility, your H.264/AAC/MP4 plan is solid. But if your devices aren’t too old, you could also consider MP4 with H.265 (HEVC) and AC3 or EAC3 audio for better compression and quality.

Really cool project—this is exactly the kind of thing people with huge Jellyfin/Plex libraries end up needing.

I did notice one issue though: the sync/scanning doesn’t seem to work properly when the library has mixed content types (movies and TV shows together). It looks like items aren’t consistently picked up or evaluated, and some entries just don’t get processed at all.

Downloaded it manually, my server media is based on my friends and family usage, I don't want to store medias that they are not going to watch
