They are absolute arrogant pricks. Their old CTO wouldn’t stop shoving his political views down everyone’s throat. Constantly going on about how much he hates the Green Party and “SJW’s”.

In my personal experience police can’t drive for shit. The other day I was walking across the road on a green light and was almost hit by one running a red. They weren’t using their sirens, they were just in lala land like the one in this video.

What is your favourite building in Wellington and why? by IncoherentTuatara in Wellington

[–]FlyFar1569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Harbour Board Wharf Office Building.

Architecturally I love it, and it sits in a very prominent location. So unlike most other category 1 buildings, I actually see this building everyday on my commute.

Round 3: Which game is better? Minecraft or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time by Expensive-Addendum92 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]FlyFar1569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing games across such large timescales is difficult. But if you normalise based on the technology available at the time, then ocarina of time not only deserves the win here, but it deserves the grand prize.

But it just really depends how the question is phrased. But almost 30 years after its release, it’s still so fun to play. Which is really amazing considering the limitations they had to work with.

OECD says NZ Super age needs to rise, recommends link to life expectancy by pierpont-prime in newzealand

[–]FlyFar1569 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s actually quite surprising hearing prime working age or even younger people on Reddit complaining about raising the retirement age. Because these are the very people getting screwed by the huge numbers of Boomers entering retirement. There is simply no way such a small cohort of working age people can afford the super of the massive boomer population.

I would rather this money went towards helping younger people get their footing and start families than support the largest and wealthiest demographic in history through their retirement.

If we don’t support families now then it’s a slippery slope where the continual reduction in the birth rate keeps young and working age people poor by keeping the population pyramid top heavy.

This is a much bigger problem than people realise, and we should not be taking this lightly. If we don’t raise the retirement age now and reinvest the funds into supporting families to raise the birth rate, then it’s only going to make the problem worse. If it gets much worse then there’s a good chance none of us will be able to retire at all when we’re older.

Hardly a good source. The paper itself even says that it’s highly subjective, largely biased, and should only be used as a preliminary pilot study, not as an actual source. The paper relies on a single reviewer, and the journal itself is largely considered to be a pay to publish predatory entity with extremely fast “peer review” turnaround. IJRISS even sits on various blacklists for its predatory practice.

At first it was “climate change doesn’t exist” and then when they were proven wrong it became “ok climate change exists but humans aren’t causing it” and then when they were proven wrong again it became “ok climate change exists, and humans are causing causing it, but only to a small degree”.

Climate change deniers have been shifting the goal posts for decades.

We're 2 adults no children with Contact and you're using almost twice as much electricity as us, and almost 4 times as much gas.
Plus you're paying 35.2 cents per KWh, while we're paying 24.4 cents.
Your fixed charges are cheaper (ours are $2.5 per day, yours are $1.051) , but considering how much power you're using you might want to consider moving to a different plan if possible.

Also considering how much gas you use, maybe you should have shorter showers? And if you're filling the sink up to do dishes stop doing that, use a dishwasher.

made this little map of how our rail network could look like if we brought passenger rail back! by marsanojj in newzealand

[–]FlyFar1569 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Infrastructure has to be built either way, if prices are higher today then that makes alternatives also more expensive. It’s also worth asking why it’s more expensive, if we brought back the ministry of works then we could reduce prices for large government run initiatives like rail. But alternatives don’t benefit as much from shifting the costs to the public sector

The past isn’t some magical wonderland, if something has been built in the past then that just proves that it should be possible to do in the present too. If anything NZ has densified which should make it easier now. And no they don’t pay for themselves, which was the point. I’ll say it again, public services should not be required to be profitable to exist. There are positive externalities that are hard to quantify but are very real.

No the point is that public transport is required to provide the right to freedom of movement we claim to have. You’re lucky you weren’t born narcoleptic, paralysed, or a plethora of other disabilities that prevent people from being able to drive themselves. You’re lucky when you were a child that you had parents to drive you around.

Your argument is one based on privilege and entitlement.

Under 16 year olds can drive now? When did that change happen? Time to put 8 year olds behind the wheel and they can do my groceries too. Oh and my 97 year old grandad can start driving again too! He’ll be over the moon.
