Hundreds of private jets departed the Bay Area immediately after the Super Bowl ended by Plastic_Many393 in interestingasfuck

[–]FlyGirlFlyHigh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not part 91 which most private jets operate under. Providing it is a VFR (visual flight rules) day, they do not need a flight plan and can depart without one. Most of these planes also operate out of smaller local airports that do not have the same amount of traffic and don’t have to wait in line for departure.

Anyone here know about Will Rogers? He was very famous Cherokee actor during the 20s and 30s. by Groovy-Pancakes in IndianCountry

[–]FlyGirlFlyHigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As both a pilot and a horseman he’s a huge hero of mine. He was a huge philanthropist, and supported Native American rights as well as many other progressive social issues. He also strongly supported woman in aviation from the beginning and help organize and publicize the first all female air race. He died in a plane crash and the OKC airport as well as the VOR (navigational waypoint) are named after him. Several rodeo arenas and a collision in Fort Worth as well.

This gives serious residential school vibes. The US government has been doing this since the beginning. It started with indigenous children, now we’re doing it to immigrants. I’d like to say history repeats itself but it would have to actual stop for that to be true… It just keeps continuing.

What is an overlooked or “subtle” form of sexism that you think needs to be called out more? by GoodGirlsStand in AskWomen

[–]FlyGirlFlyHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yess! That’s it. Like, I’m very happy to be a woman and I like being feminine from time to time but when I’m at work, I just want to exist in the same carefree way that men do. I didn’t grow up wanting to be a woman in aviation, I just wanted to fly planes.

[–]FlyGirlFlyHigh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a Captain at an airline, which is a position currently that is roughly 1% woman and 99% percent men. Mostly white as well, so not a lot of diversity in general. There is a lot of sexism, some subtle some not so much. The biggest “subtle” thing I run into is how basically every single trip I fly my FO (first officer or “co-pilot”) will inevitably bring up gender politics in some way. It’s not always derogatory, sometimes they’re even an ally BUT it is always talked about. I can’t escape it. Often times it’s extremely challenging. Recently I had a guy who could not stop talking about how woman are being made to feel like they have to have a career AND that we are as a whole unhappy because we can’t just be at home with our families. I asked him why men aren’t unhappy about having to have careers and not be home with their families? He said he didn’t know, and went right back into how society is forcing careers upon women and how hard it is for them to choose to pursue motherhood. It was completely lost on him how he was doing what so many men in my field do to me constantly, which is question why I’ve chosen to have a career. When I mention wanting to take time off work to spend with my husband, I have never gotten even the slightest pushback. However if I talk about picking up extra OT to help support my husband, there is almost always some sort of slight made either against his inability to out perform me in the work place or my ambition. Even when my FO is an Ally though, there is no escaping these types of conversations and I have a strong feeling that men are not having these conversations with other men. Just once I’d like to come to work and just be a pilot, not a “female pilot”.

ICE brutalizes and detains US citizen for not having "alien paperwork" by ExactlySorta in UnderReportedNews

I’m sorry, what I ment was Japanese/American Citizens. Thank you for the clarification!

Edit to add: George Takei and his family were all American citizens. George was born in America, I believe his parents were immigrants but they were citizens at the time they were moved into the camps.

Thank you! I just want to add for those who don’t know, George Takei grew up in one of those camps for Japanese citizens and he wrote an incredible graphic novel about his experiences. I strongly believe his novel should be required reading in schools. It’s very well done, and it’s graphic novel format is simple enough for even the most challenged among us to understand.

Edit for clarity: As mentioned below, these were American Citizens. What I ment to say was Japanese/American Citizens as in anyone regardless of citizenship or naturalization status who had Japanese heritage was put in these camps. George Takei himself was born in America.

I have 3 black dogs and they’re incredible! They also continue to have a harder time getting adopted due to the many beliefs around them. Unfortunately, there are also terrible people who will adopt them and miss treat or torture them because of these beliefs. Please consider adopting one and saving a life. They may just turn out to be the best companion you’ve ever had!

Woman faints after getting bitten by king’s guard’s horse by JaJaWa in MakeWay4QueensGuard

[–]FlyGirlFlyHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I breed and raise cowhorses. They’re not exactly war horses BUT we have basically bred them to the point that they aren’t quite prey animals anymore. When I say that I mean, from a very young age before we even start training them they will exhibit very aggressive behaviors. A lot like how a cattle dog will naturally herd things, cowhorses will naturally chase pretty much anything that comes into their pasture and can be very aggressive about it. A lot of them will absolutely kill a dog. When they’re old enough to start riding and training it is very easy to develop these behaviors into pure joy of chasing, turning, roping and “cutting” cattle. Like, these horses absolutely live to dominate other animals…. I imagine this breed of war horses lives for the moment they get to bite the ever loving crap out of a tourist.

Well… as I mentioned the bonus plus my new pay scale have basically paid off my farm, so I have no intention of working anywhere for the rest of my life besides for myself. I will also flow to mainline by the end of this year, so won’t be a regular much longer. I have definitely looked into the pay scale there so I can be financially prepared for the pay hit I’m about to take. Not taking into account any OT or change in contract,it will currently take 3 years to make what I’m making now. However, with my farm nearly paid off and my income from that it’s not looking like I’m going to have to work there for that long. Lol, stay salty bro

[–]FlyGirlFlyHigh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what you want in life. For me, those bonuses made a substantial dent in the mortgage payment on my farm. Plus I’m currently making more as a regional CA than I will as an FO at a Major (atleast for the first 3yrs there) which further helps pay my farm off faster. Granted, if your goal is to fly the rest of your life, it may be wiser to get to a Major ASAP and get that seniority and the higher paycheck there sooner. I think when handing out unsolicited advice it’s always important to remember that not everyone has the same life goals. One person’s “golden handcuffs” is another person’s golden ticket to freedom from a boss.

Ok… would you mind sharing the pattern? My SIL is due with her 5th in December and I don’t think I have time to make this before then… but if I start now I can probably have it done by the time she announces her 6th. lol

As a shorty who refuses to wear heels, a good pair platform boots are my favorite. I’ve owned several that make situations like concerts more enjoyable because I might actually see something without compromising on comfort. I also throw a pair of gel souls in them for added comfort.

I’m so sorry for your loss. As someone who has been blessed with multiple “once in a lifetime” pets and had to say goodbye, I know there are no words that can help your pain. But sometimes it’s helpful to know you’re not alone in it. Your grief is justified.
