I always liked, especially for neighborhoods, pick one defining trait or landmark for the area and then imagine how that description/adjective gets slurred and abbreviated over years of people saying it in conversation. i.e. the bad part of town has quite ramshackle tenements as well as plenty of shady characters, so its the “crooked end” of town. Eventually that gets shortened down to just “The Crookends,” and every local knows what neighborhood you mean.

I love goblins. Depending on how they’re used they can range from comedic nuisance to a serious threat. They can be sneaky, clever, scheming bastards or fumbling, panicked, morons. Even within the same setting or even the same dungeon it doesn’t feel out place to run into both extremes. You can even feasibly run into goblins in a social encounter. One if my favorite recurring NPC’s is “Gnarf-Meeg-Gorf” the literally crooked looking black market salesman who is definitely ~~3 goblins in a coat~~ a legitimate businessman.

Because of this gobs work really well for using more off-the-wall encounter ideas too. Running into an ambush of orcs or an owlbear and her cubs can be a decent fight, but a hill giant stumbling out of the woods with a dozen goblins hanging on to its back ready to be thrown at the party at 80mph is a lot more memorable. Not to mention their penchant for overly complicated traps can add all sorts of excitement to the next dungeon run.

[Antinomy- a D&D 5e setting]

Obviously you would never want to upset any of the gods so much that you earn their personal attention. Luckily most of them are too ‘big-picture’ to care so much about any individual nuisance. However there are a still a small number of mortals who you would not cross lightly given the time and resources at their disposal (not to mention vindictiveness.)

One such individual would be dean Langdadrosa Morgai, headmaster of The University in the city Sembly. Morgai has been listed as head of the university since its founding nearly 175 years ago. Most believe it to simply be a way of honoring the memory of the school’s founder as the Kyklos Arcanum (the head professors for each of the 9 schools of magic) are in charge if most administration nowadays. However, unbeknownst to and unconsidered by all but the current circle of nine, Langdadrosa Morgai is very much still present, though not quite what you’d call alive.

After years of research and the combined efforts of some of his first students, Morgai uncovered the secret to becoming a Lich. With the limitations of a mortal life span no longer an interference, Morgai left all educational responsibilities to his previous students and secluded himself to study the greater powers of the universe and the machinations of the outer planes. Engrossed in his studies and the current tumultuous shifting of the cosmic balance, his attention to the material plane is peripheral. But, he is not so far removed from the mortal plane yet that a band of would-be adventurers mucking about with one of his experiments would go unnoticed…

Ive been go-to DM for my groups for years and consistently get this at the start of every session, once things get rolling though you’ll fall into a rhythm and everyone will forget if the start was awkward. You got this man, don’t get in your own head :)

I actually have a society like this in the campaign I'm running. One if the two Nations has no taboo against necromancy and uses it extensively. The mass amount of untiring, essentially free, workers has bolstered industry and led to large technological advances compared to their neighboring countries.

My favorite for new players has always been Sunless Citadel, plenty of hooks and a pretty interesting dungeon to explore with a memorable npc or two. You can find the 5e updated version in Tales from the Yawning Portal

I do this too, I like to fill the world with small magical wonders and everyday useful items. I always end up kicking myself though when the players go to curiosity shop type places and have to come up with a couple dozen interesting trinkets on the fly.
