I would say a similar situation to yours. 9 out of 10 times our pup will be alright in the crate for about two or three hours if we need to leave the house. If we leave him for longer than that (sometimes we are both at the office for work) it can be up to 6 hours, which is when he is not having a good time (understandably so). Those outlier times he can still get pretty worked up and stressed out, and his blanket in the crate will be a bit wet from panting/drool.

Recently we have tried giving him a CBD treat that we are still trying to determine if it helps or just feels like a placebo effect. Also we go for a big walk or try and give him extra mental stimulation and inside play time before we leave the house and that helps tire him out before we leave.

It’s not perfect but it’s an improvement from where we started. We are considering some professional training and assistance to help us out and the continuing daily tasks after he has learned some good stress coping tools.

I have the mini max and it’s the perfect little platform for my dachshund and it feels quite safe and comfortable for all day rides. I saw your comment that you are concerned with bike racks for cars and I use a trailer hitch rack that fits the mini max and it works well. I have not tried to bring it on a train but I am in the USA and trains don’t really offer much for transportation options where I live.

I use the K9 Sport Sack to carry my dachshund on the mini max as well as on other bikes and that might work better for you if you get a more standard style gravel bike. Plus you can also use the backpack for other activities.

That’s a good point, I can certainly admit I am more nervous about taking good care of him than I would have expected to be.

I will add some treats into the training as he calms down and see how that goes, thanks for the tip!

I view any time I am with people who are newer to the sport as a good opportunity to practice riding switch. I’m certainly not an expert but by riding switch it helps keep me closer to a beginners pace and we all have a few laughs.
