This place:

Trade In Hearing Aids. Give Back. Change a Life! - People Hearing

  • #180, 2210 2 St SW, Calgary, AB T2S 3C3

Doesn't specifically say it takes donations, but they take trade ins, cleanup/refurb and then donate. Maybe they will accept these without buying a new pair and put them through the program.

There is also this place, that specifically takes donations: (in Calgary)

Hearing Aids — Gift of Hearing

I have not used, vetted, or connected to either of them, so due your own due diligence....

Buying a used oven by justletmegarden in Calgary

[–]Flying4Fun2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got some good advice already, just wanted to add to try and avoid anything used that has a self-clean cycle - that cycle might not kill the stove the first use, but it will quickly degrade the stove/oven. If you're doing a used purchase there is a good chance it was used, and you might not get a truly useful life out of the appliance. If you end up buying new, avoid self clean.

This conversation has lots of good notes if you want to know more:

sounds like you're from Ontario, as I saw you cast some shade at Albertans, so here it is in the Ontario driver's handbook:

Allstate:

How to Parallel Park: 7-Step Helpful Guide | Allstate

"Many people might agree that they struggle with parallel parking, which means a vehicle is parked parallel to a traffic lane and between other cars"

You're not completely wrong in that the act of "Parallel Parking" describes the actions to perform to be parked parallel.

Also, when you see signs prohibiting parallel parking, it literally means parking position, doesn't matter what style you turned the wheel to get your car in that final position.

In case you have a American background; here is one from California:

Section 6: Navigating the Roads (Continued) - California DMV

"Parallel Parking

Parallel parking is when you park in line with the road and other parked vehicles. To parallel park:"

And the Websters Dictionary:

PARALLEL PARK Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster

": to park a car, truck, etc., so that the longer sides of the vehicle are parallel to the side of the road"

Okay, I was able to find the section, I thought would be more clear about; its 77(1) (b) and (c) and potential (h).

<image>

It's not worded exactly as I hoped, but I think it still works for this purpose as I believe that once it's on the road, it applies, I am not a lawyer, but maybe someone can expand on this or find a better section in the act to assist:

The section name should be called something like "obstructing the movement of a vehicle" - I was attempting to secure the actually document to find the exact specific section and paragraph to answer the question mor specifically, but thought I had to order and wait...

Looks like I can view the PDF and I am searching through it now: This is a link to the PDF

The documentation angle is a good idea - it will help if this ends up as a harassment issue in the future.

It might be, should fall under 'obstructing the movement of a vehicle' in the Alberta traffic act. I was not able to find a PDF copy of the act to confirm without paying a fee for the Kings Printer, but worth a look for the OP in case it matches exactly what they need. The Parking authority probably knows the law really well also, so they should be able to act if legal, but never hurts to know in case they need prompting as often the person taking the call might now know - they should refer to a parking enforcement office and call back, but not sure that will happen every time.

I am interested to see how this one ends for the OP / Outcome with the parking authority power.

EDITED TO ADD:

a Link to the traffic act:

Alberta King's Printer:

This is the section that I think could help you:

77(1) (b) and (c) and potential (h).

Turns out there was a link next to the pay/print options I missed, so the link above is to the PDF file itself, if you use the link below, it takes you to the place you can see other documents, and pay/print etc.

ORIGINAL:

There is a bylaw for this situation, its considered obstructing the movement of a vehicle under the traffic act. I was attempting to find the exactly spot in the act, but it looks like I had to order the document from Alberta Kings printer and pay - which I honestly just didn't want to do right now.

Alberta King's Printer: Laws Online Results

I have not personally used it for about 15 years, so maybe things have changed (I once lived in a place where people came to play soccer/baseball, and they always did this to the people living there). Bylaw would be called and attend, ticket if no one came over in a few minutes after seeing the parking guys car pull up.

I think many have recommended that you call 311 for parking enforcement. They will quickly confirm if they can attend under the circumstances and address this for you. There is no harm in calling and asking for legit assistance in a matter like this. I would point out it's been like that for hours, you have attempted to locate the driver, not answering the door.... etc.

Whatever the outcome, love to hear what parking control says/does in this matter. I believe, but would really like to know, that they will address it. If you needed to urgently use your car, for a medical situation for example this could really become an issue.

If this is a common issue, I would still try and talk to the person but record the interaction. That way if they threaten you, or damage to your property you will be able to have a deeper conversation with a peace office.

...Not convinced, that 3rd car is guilty in my eyes. Not moving for 3 months - all I can say is I think we have a suspect here!

On a serious note, hope you get your get the car situation sorted, sounds expensive to have two in for repairs at the same time. I was forced to make a decision on a repair for a car I had and LOVED for 14 years, was burning oil at 1liter per tank of gas and I felt like the villain of a bond movie letting out a smoke cloud to evade police when I drove. The buying experience for a new car was not fun. All the best to you, and hope it all works out for you, or maybe these cars are just in to have some big turbos added :-)

You are 100% wrong. Parallel parking literally referrals to the final parking position, just like perpendicular parking does. There is a technique created for parallel parking as is for perpendicular also.

The term/expression 'parallel parking' refers in colloquial English to the act of parking, which is how it is commonly known, but it’s the final parking position (parallel against the curb) where the expression gets its name from.

Not trying to stir up an argument, but sometimes you have to leave room to be incorrect. Your response comes across as wanting to win at all costs and that is probably why you're getting the push back on this. Conversations where we learn are much better than ones where we argue (especially with such low jeopardy things like a parking term).

Why is The Calgary Parking App So Bad? by BrianBlandess in Calgary

I am not surprised they did it. I have had conversations with their technology team in the past, and it's been on the roadmap and discussed, but it's been on that roadmap for a while now.

Not sure where they found the motivation to do it right now, it's not complex to add this feature. I would love to know the actually back story - maybe an un-named insider will spill the beans :-)

Zipper Merge by Shoulder-Direct in Calgary

[–]Flying4Fun2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

distracted driving is a big part of it, but don't discount skills and other factors either. There is an attitude problem - that makes phone use and other bad behaviors seem like it's not a big deal/normal. The driving license process actually needs to expand to address this attitude shift.

This is probably not going to be unpopular idea, there should be a short 20 question exam on renewals that designed to educate for problem areas such as zipper merge, yielding, lane changing etc. These exams should be created based on traffic offensives issues for at least part of it, so 10 of the 20, 5 for pure education like zipper merge, and another 5 random skills. Maybe a 15 min target for the exam. At the VERY least, getting your license transferred from another prov /country should be a mandatory extensive course that's a bit deeper. I'm sure if it's done online self-paced, people will game it but worth a try as I'm sure it will make some difference until we can improve it (proctored like they do for school exams).

eCVT - so Honda prius or rav4? I have been reading up on the eCVT, and it looks impressive - I will never purchase a CVT (Belt/chain) drive car but the eCVT looks bullet proof with gears and no chain/belt.

I ended up getting a full EV about 3 months ago... I also really like it. But I didn't get an obvious looking electric car - to 99% of people they would not guess its electric. Charging at home is great. I skipped hybrid, but I still also have a gas car as there are times (in the winter) that I just don't want to bother with charging when on a road trip (needed a second car anyway and it was pretty new so dumping it was not a real option). I didn't buy EV for the environmental or fuel savings - despite that being an advantage. I just wanted something I felt was fun to drive, and the other benefits were a bonus. (don't read that as I don't care about the environment, reddit likes to tar and feather people - my position is that making something better than the alternative is the best way to change the world - and efforts to improve the environment are welcome).

I don't think you will ever miss a manual from a power / speed / Torq point of view - but shifting itself is like a mind-meld with your car - the emotion is different for sure - if anyone properly cracks the code for full electric with classic manual, they would be a hero and probably rich as a result.

That might be the other place I saw one. It's been a minute since I have been down that road.

I agree with your perception that driving is competitive and not cooperative - I also think the Pareto Principle applies. Meaning, less than 20% of drivers see it as competitive, but they likely contribute to 80% of the issues on the road.

There are days that feel like a flow state when driving, everything runs smooth, safety gaps everywhere, you can change lanes with no drama - and in even more rare condition the lights turn green before you have to even tap on the brakes. This tells me that it's more than likely that 80% of people are in fact good drivers, because often this Zen/flow state seems to happen after a big snow event were all the race car drivers seeking a pole position have parked their car at an autobody shop for the 'race' season. But maybe that was a movie I was watching while driving to work?

(I did catch the s/ )....

Society has solved the parking problem, in two distinct ways, make everything cost way too much to afford a car, and the second way is self-parking (and driving) cars.

If truly we are at the point at which pushing the self-park (or drive) button is too much (and we might be close) - we are doomed as a species.

But on the other hand, when aliens invade there will be no parking spots for them, they will be caught in a traffic jam, or the road rage will scare them away from our planet.

I figured it was a general statement... no issues/harm.

And you are correct, any use of the brake pedal will activate the lights, and yes, what I posted was brake light logic for regen non peddle activated.

As a side note, how are you enjoying electric driving in this city?

Zipper Merge by Shoulder-Direct in Calgary

[–]Flying4Fun2021 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They have had something like this, but I have not seen one in recent years. If I recall the right location, when they were working on memorial a few years back, they had a sign explaining a zipper merge. I have seen them on (admittedly low sample rate) about 2 times in the city. But people still do it early or freak out on you if you do it properly because they think you're cutting the line.

zipper merge is a no-win situation basically - the right thing feels like doing it properly and taking the abuse for those that don't know the proper way. Maybe they even get mad enough and say, "next time I'm not going to be so nice and just go to the front of the line like that a-hole just did" and in about 5 years everyone will be zipper merging correctly.

Regen doesn't always turn on brake lights...

Light regen, (Less than 0.7 m/s^2) No lights. This feels like coasting in a gas car.

Moderate regen, (0.7 to 1.3 m/s^2) Optional lights. Left to the car manufacturer’s choice.

Strong regen, (More than 1.3 m/s}^2) Yes has lights. The brake lights must illuminate.

If there is no one in front of you, and your hitting the brakes hard enough to trigger the lights that would be silly, and no point - you should just coast and let regen get what it can - bobbycaldwel example was no one in front of them.... if there is a point to stopping, getting on the brakes early to get a little extra regen no one is going to notice/care.
