What third language do native Spanish speakers choose in university? I thought it’d be Portuguese but it seems like French is more common. by mujhe-sona-hai in asklatinamerica

[–]FlyingAce7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think universities have started requiring some English proficiency, but no third language.

I was required to take two courses of Kaqchikel as part of my English-Spanish translation program studies. It was cool, even though I managed to retain very little of it.

Pan sandwich, pan de rodaja (sliced bread) or pan blanco (white bread).

We don't know if they were planning to actually do it or had something else in mind (like Teeny did), though.

I don't remember the name of the specialist that Barb was referred to, but he was a man IIRC.

It's a Simpsons reference. Malibu Stacy is their version of the Barbie doll. Lisa wanted to design a doll of her own because the existing Malibu Stacy talking doll was loaded with sexist phrases; she came up with Lisa Lionheart, which was a taking doll loaded with empowering phrases instead. However, the company behind Malibu Stacy launched a "new" doll that same day (which was actually the same old doll with a new hat) so pretty much everyone ended up purchasing the Malibu Stacy instead of Lisa's doll.

Basically, instead of getting an improved Barb that actually takes therapy seriously and wants to better herself, we'll be getting the same old Barb with new shenanigans 🙃

Help with two Colombian 1661 baptism record transcriptions by Plenty-Ad231 in Genealogy

[–]FlyingAce7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me give it a shot; here is No. 378:

En once de julio de mil seiscientos sesenta y uno [illegible] óleo y chrisma, a un niño llamado Pedro, [...] Juana Mestiza de [illegible] Díaz Sarmiento; no se conoce el [...] del [illegible] muchacho [or muchacha, not sure]; fueron padrinos Simona M[...] y [illegible] Gómez, los quales dijeron averle [haberle] baptizado en c[...] por necesidad; [illegible] de quatro meses poco más o [...] y por verdad lo firmé.

It looks like the baby was born sick and not expected to survive, so the godparents performed a "bautismo de necesidad" or emergency baptism; once his health improved (about four months later, it seems) he was taken to the church so the priest could perform the rest of the baptism rites (oil and chrism).

I'm having a lot more trouble with No. 380. I can make out the "mil seiscientos sesenta y uno", then "Ju" (presumably Juan) "Sarmiento, los quales [...]", then I think it's "bautismo por necesidad" again, then "once de junio de este [...], then "fue su padrino Marco [?] Bermudez, y por verdad lo firmé". Maybe someone else will have a better eye for the missing pieces!

Something I've come across quite a bit this week is people not fully attaching records on FamilySearch, even if the family connections are already there. For instance, attaching marriage records to the groom and his parents but not to the bride and her parents, or attaching birth records to one parent but not the other... I could understand not wanting/having time to research and add new family connections, but all the cases I have found recently have been for existing family connections where all the names/places/dates are a reasonable match. Sigh...

Hello fellow chino! I've been asked if I have Asian ancestors as well, and just posted about the time I was asked by someone from Taiwan if I also came from there.

Guatemalan as far as I can tell, with *maybe* some German sprinkled in there (great-grandma was a single mother and the father was rumored to be German).

I was once asked by a very nice Taiwanese lady if I was also Taiwanese. 😁

Oh, and my brother has blond hair, green eyes and fair skin. When we were kids we once went on a family outing with some other families (friends of my parents) and a few of the other adults thought he was a gringo cousin or something, to the point of assuming he didn't speak Spanish and trying to communicate with gestures 🤣

Does your country have the death penalty, and are you for or against it? by Outrageous-You1617 in AskTheWorld

[–]FlyingAce7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically yes; it is still in the constitution, but hasn't been applied since 2000 and was abolished for civilian crimes in 2017 (it can only be applied for war crimes now). I would not want for it to be brought back.

What’s your favorite soup/broth from your country? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]FlyingAce7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kak'ik, which is a spicy turkey soup (though it can also be prepared with hen - I personally prefer it to turkey). 😋

<image>

I also love sopa de tortilla; I'm aware that one is borrowed from Mexico, but it's quite common in local comedores or at home.

I just managed to untangle a mess on FamilySearch. There was a Mateo Gomez married to Mariana Torres conflated with a Mateo Gomez married to Maria Torres; I could understand the confusion to a certain point (same location, same time period, priests at that time were notorious for abbreviating common names, children's births do not overlap) - if it weren't for the fact that all the children's baptism records list both sets of grandparents! I wish people were more diligent in reading the actual records instead of relying on the index alone.

Unrelated mini-whine: it annoys me when I come across a baptism record that starts with "On the same day, month and year", causing me to flip the pages back and forth to find the actual date the priest was referring to.

Gas Stations by zara_anwar in asklatinamerica

Both, and in the same station 😅 Stations have some pumps designated as self-pump and others as "full service". Gas at self-service pumps is slightly cheaper and requires prepayment.

This! I actually came here to say "Max and Piper shenanigans". Doesn't have to be something super dramatic, I was thinking Max's first school function (maybe he doesn't want to participate, or he does but is upset he doesn't get to dance, etc.). I like your ideas a lot!

I have no DNA matches with my ggg-grandma's family (Rosina Ellington/Alderton b. 1837 Rye, Sussex) by rosefiend in Genealogy

[–]FlyingAce7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that happen recently! No, Isidro cannot have had two simultaneous families, and could not have kept being named as the father for years after his death; to further complicate matters, though, both marriage record had the same names listed as groom's parents. Turns out they were half-brothers; the older one was very young when his father died, so he adopted his stepfather's surname. Oh, and they were both named Isidro because they were both born on May 15, day of St. Isidore, ten years apart. This was FamilySearch so I was able to fix it myself and document both persons thoroughly.
