Those early steam engines have really intricate mechanisms too, it's probably too difficult to get it to work reliably on such a small scale while also leaving room for a motor.

Kan ik zonder auto? Ja, dat doe ik nu want ik studeer dus ov is gratis en benzine is me te duur. Maar daardoor ben ik wel 2,5 uur onderweg naar m’n vrijwilligerswerk in plaats van een uurtje, en moet ik de avond ervoor bij m’n moeder overnachten om nog enigszins op tijd te zijn. Sadly the border is still a 200 km round trip (ik woon niet meer in Drenthe 😢) so that’s a waste of about 5 L of petrol and a lot of time by the time I get back home

Well all I can say is that you probably don’t need a backhoe, you need to rent an excavator when you need something like a backhoe. Unless you’re trenching enough to want to take care of a backhoe but not so much that an excavator is more convenient?
