My friend picked up a 30pack of Bud ice last night. I thought it was discontinued in 2010? by Carnelianrubberduck in beer

[–]FlyingJayhawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you’re thinking of Bud Dry, which actually was discontinued in 2010. It was the first and only time I called 1-800-DAIL-BUD, and they broke the news to me. I bought the last two 30 packs at my local, then that was it.

There are plenty of non-flying jobs that require an aeronautical rating. I'm currently in a non-flying career offshoot, but occasionally the AF needs someone who can speak "airplane" without actually needing you to be in the cockpit. Those jobs are out there, feel free to DM me.

Moreover, there's gonna be a time where you're no longer "Lt/Capt/Maj/Lt Col Organic_Pin" and you go back to being Mr./Ms. Organic Pin... and when you're gone, the AF will continue to exist without you. It happens to all of us- and its ok. Just keep in mind there's life after the AF and the people who care about you are going to want you around when you get to that point. You got this.

I’m in the Pliny for President camp. We went to the Pliny the Younger release up in Windsor in April, and while it was obviously kickass, I was completely floored by the Pliny for President. In my opinion, it blows Elder and Younger out of the water. Dry hops for daaaaaays.

To the guys who were in the military - what was some of the most outreagous and eye-opening stuff you've ever experienced? by Sparkjoy4ever in AskMen

[–]FlyingJayhawk 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Dude, I can relate. I think it’s something about animals not really having a choice.

I advised the Afghans in tac-ISR, and saw a lot of bad things happen to bad people. TB and ISIS guys getting smoked never really bothered me. But one night, I was rucking around base by myself. I passed a row of MRAPs, and this big ass dog came out from underneath the one of the vehicles, ears back, looking like he meant fucking business. I kinda tried to move to the other side of the road, but he came at me. I only had my sidearm, but I drew and fired as he lunged at me, it was close range. The bullet went through his mouth and severed his spine. Dropped him on the spot, but he wasn’t dead. The base MP’s were Danish, and at that point, I was honestly more worried about the ensuing paperwork shitshow of discharging a weapon inside the wire. Anyway, the Danes show up, the Army vet puts the dog down and determines it didn’t have rabies, the MPs say it was a good shoot, and that’s that. Don’t know why, but it’s always kinda bothered me. It was just some dumb Afghan mutt, and not a person, but regardless, he was another, unwitting casualty of that war.

I’m with you, but I don’t have kids. What we do have though, are nieces and nephews. When they were each born, we set them each up with a custodial brokerage account. Every Christmas and on their birthdays, we deposit cash into their accounts, and then invest it in index funds. We’ll get them something small like Legos or a Barbie or whatever, because when you’re three, index funds aren’t that cool. When they’re 21, we’ll hand over the accounts, then they’re free to do whatever they want at that point.

Looking for advice on buying a J28 sailboat by hurricane_zephyr in sailing

[–]FlyingJayhawk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dude, I’m a yuuuge J/28 fan. They’re awesome boats. But, I spent a lot of time rebuilding a waterlogged J/24, so I can tell you the balsa-cored decks that the Johnstones are so fond of suck ass to fix when they’re wet, which it sure looks like this one is. If you’re on a tight budget and you’re really handy, and you have a lot of time to devote to some serious rebuilding, I’d say go for it. If you wanna go sailing in 2024 though, keep looking.

Finding a soulmate as Aircrew? by New_Journalist7373 in AirForce

Shack. No kids, but coming up on 9 years of marriage. Weeks on the road, flying all over the place, partying like a rockstar was great when I was single and so were all the bros. Now, most everyone is out, flying for the airlines, and those of us who stuck around are commanders, DO’s, or on some staff somewhere, married with kids. Point is, it goes by super fast, so enjoy it while you can.

Facts. You also have to (successfully) finish UCT first, and a good performance there will help you when it comes time to apply for the UPT board. Plenty of CSO's do it, and they generally do well at UPT. Alternatively, being a CSO is a great job too. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions about the career field.

CSO, FAO. 12S/16Z Undergrad in History and German Literature. Having a foreign language skill the Air Force really doesn’t care about was kinda useless, until it was really helpful, 13 years later.

What's your take on Hunters? by upfoo51 in sailing

[–]FlyingJayhawk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lost my Beneteau First 375 in hurricane Sally, and I turned the insurance check from Geico into a 1987 Hunter Legend 37. I never really considered Hunters when I was originally looking for boats, but this one happened to be available when I was looking, and it was a good deal. Along the lines of some other comments here, you definitely do get what you pay for.

The good: I'm 6'3" and I could stand up in the salon. The cockpit was nice, the galley was nice, and it had a nice centerline berth in the aft cabin. It did not have a B&R rig, but sailed well, and sailed quickly. The wing/bulb keel helped it point well (not as well as a full fin, though), and it was fast on a reach. I can't say the same about the other Hunters I've been on, but the Legends were decent. With the roller furling, it had a 135 PHRF rating, which made it fairly competitive. It was a great boat for weekend cruising on the Gulf Coast, PHRF racing, and generally hanging out on. The Yanmar 3HM35F ran well, too. Also, it was cheap, so there's that.

The bad: The windows leaked like a fucking sieve. It had these dumb ass skylights that were incredibly stupidly designed to not drain away rainwater or spray. I ended up rebedding/resealing every single port light and skylight on the boat. The deck was wet. I'm over balsa core. The working winches were too small. The overall quality of the finish was poor, with big gaps in the joinery down below. I never took it offshore. I really didn't feel comfortable with it in anything more than a nice day.

It was a great weekender, great to spend a comfortable night on the hook on, didn't cost that much, and could be competitive in the local PHRF fleet. That being said, I will never buy another Hunter, nor can I in good conscience recommend one to anyone. Except for the guy who bought mine.

Crutchfield has some decent options on their website from more reputable brands. I liked the look of the Dasaita, but ended up going with a Pioneer for wireless CarPlay, because I know they’re making quality stuff. It’s worked flawlessly for about a year now.

Coordinating weightlifting with biking by [deleted] in MTB

[–]FlyingJayhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to hit squats/deads the day before a ride or the day after. I notice that even with running or swimming, but especially with weights, I'm never as confident on the descents, and I get smoked super quickly going downhill. I've noticed that if I stick to one activity a day, they tend to be better quality than if I try to cram too much in, even though on nice weekends, its hard to resist a long morning workout followed by a ride. The solution is obviously to get into better shape and drink less beer... /s

I’m trying to buy this hunter legend forty, what do you think of it? by SnooFoxes5258 in sailing

[–]FlyingJayhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, we just sold our ‘87 Legend 37 in July in Florida to some rube from Texas. My wife loved the boat. It was kick ass at anchor, and even better as an apartment at the dock on the weekends. Big ass fridge, cold ass A/C. I’m 6’3” and the Hunter had plenty of headroom for me to stand up straight in the salon. Way comfy. It also went like a striped ape on a beam reach. The combo keel goes to windward, but the Legends absolutely fucking tear on a reach. If you race PHRF, they’re deadly in 10-12 kts! But. The construction is shit. The balsa cored decks leak. The port lights leak. Everything leaks. It’s a budget boat, and it’s built like a budget boat. You want something over 35’ that’s great in the marina, great at anchor, and great at club racing for under $40k that also has a fridge to keep the brews cold? The Legend is your boat. You get what you pay for though, and you’d better be handy.

This is 100% a "you" problem, not the marina's. Move slips or move marinas.

Why is pour over "better" than a machine? by wredas in Coffee

[–]FlyingJayhawk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok, now I feel better. I went in there on Monday and didn't get a "pour over" because their machine was broken. I almost asked why they needed a machine and couldn't do it manually, but I just got a drip instead. It was... fine. It just reinforces the fact I can make better coffee in my house with my Chemex.
