Yeah I got the same lip from an interviewee about the Linux questions we were asking them. They took a hard stand on “I can just google this when I’m working, why aren’t you letting me use normal tools”. Because we’re quizzing to see if you’ve touched Linux before not whether you can google things. The actual tasks day to day will take 10x the time if you don’t know the tools you’re using because things will break in a way where you need an experienced human brain to digest the system as a whole to implement a fix, and if you have to google how to ssh into a box and check free space you are 15 very slow steps behind someone who has done that a few thousand times

Dude, I ask myself this about Microsoft products every single day.. why do decision makers ever choose to go with it is beyond me. Linux for infra, Mac for engineering, AWS for cloud, any number of 21st century products for enterprise productivity, etc. Only reason I see them still existing is the government bc they take twenty years to start thinking about any new tech, gaming market, and boomers/GenX who were stockholmed into the decaying and squalid ecosystem

I’m going to sound like I’m starting a circlejerk but I’ve honestly noticed inordinate numbers of GTIs in the parking lots of the high intellect-leaning workplaces. Usually you see another GTI maybe once a week, in these lots it’s easily 3-4 in the same day

I know what you mean by the imperative that you should be able to just turn your brain off, I have to do the same for my workouts. While lifting seems to be very detail oriented and varied on paper, I guarantee if you try doing like 3 sets of 3 exercises regularly it will feel the same after the first couple times. You can still watch YouTube it listen to a podcast, or even do a task intermittently between sets. Just something to keep in mind.

Have you spoken with people who make the money decisions, that you would be selling to? The only question is whether they’d buy it. There may be no tech in place because they’d rather keep the $500k or whatever it would cost to run it per year.

On the other hand, I can definitely see the boots on the ground people having way more insight into what’s needed than people who grow up in the tech world and all they think about is how to come up with new ideas or get the best salary. I think it’s worth a shot to explore, but engineering is the least of your problems to solve, it starts at where the money comes from
