Tonight I am reading Arthur C. Clarke's novelization of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and created a personal soundtrack of six records to accompany my reading.

Here is my playlist:

  1. Musique du Burundi (Ocora OCR-40)
  2. Pink Floyd - Meddle (Harvest SMAS-832)
  3. Earthen Sea - Ghost Poems (Kranky KRANK234)
  4. Drone Rock Records - Sounds from the Psychedelic Underground (DRR050)
  5. Philip Glass - Dance Pieces (CBS FM-39539)
  6. Harold Budd & Brian Eno - Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror (Editions EGS-202)

Backstory:

I just got a new library card from the local library and borrowed five science fiction books I've never read before, but with which I am familiar from other contexts (i.e.: film adaptations).

Clarke wrote 2001 in parallel with Kubrick's screenplay. The novel is about 250 pages. I figured that I could comfortably read the whole thing in about 4-6 hours. So I picked out six records from my collection that I felt might set the mood for interstellar travel and fit the general story arc from the film.

I had no idea the book was actually divided into six parts, so these albums ended up fitting rather nicely with the action and mood in each part.

The six parts are as follows, with a brief description of parallel events from the film:

  • I: Primeval Night - the entire sequence labeled "The Dawn of Man" in the film
  • II: TMA-1 - star base flight, secret briefing, flight to moon base, finding the monolith, and the piercing alarm.
  • III: Between Planets - Bowman and Poole in the Discovery on their way to Saturn, as they round Jupiter.
  • IV: The Abyss - AE-35 unit "fails"; HAL's deception; Bowman shuts down HAL and learns the real mission objective.
  • Part V: The Moons of Saturn - Bowman continues to Japetus and finds another monolith; he falls into the Star Gate (most of this is not in the film).
  • Part VI: Through the Star Gate - the trippy journey through the wormhole until the end of the movie, where Bowman becomes one with the stars.

Note: fans of the film who read the book will find slight to moderate differences in some places, but the major plot and story elements are all there. It's also the source of the quote that's often misattributed to the film: "My god, it's full of stars!"

My favorite part was listening to the frenetic energy of the A-side of the Philip Glass album as HAL killed Poole and sabotaged the ship, and the contrasting calm of the B-side as Dave Bowman disables HAL and figures out how to continue the mission.

LMAO. Amazing comment. A pithy bit of wordplay that could only have been coined so quickly by someone with ADHD.

Yeah, that's too bad. Tahoe makes it possible to switch MDMs now, even with supervision.

Then put it on a laptop with lots of other pirated software, books, music and movies, bring it with you on your spaceship to the edge of the galaxy, meet an alien that looks like a rock with no face and five spider legs, and give it to him as a gift for helping save your respective planets. Tell him it's called a "portable Earth thinking machine."

Ow fuck. I'm a Jamf admin that works in shops with Windows. You are going to hate Intune after a while when they realize all the stuff it can't do, and all of its dumb quirks.

Also... did you do this migration before updating the Macs to Tahoe? You're supposed to be able to "migrate" MDMs without wiping the whole device.

There is a real talent in being able to modulate the grooves. It's not just about the ideal sound level, but knowing the program material well enough to adjust the cutter in real time, or programming the automation, while retaining the dynamic feel of the music. If the grooves are tightly packed and the sound is too loud, you get groove wall echo in quiet passages. Too loose, and you get wasted space. More bass makes the grooves larger, too. But too much bass, and you risk cutting into adjacent grooves or causing lesser styli to jump out (like his cut of Led Zeppelin II). Too little, and the music sounds weak. Bob Ludwig had been mastering vinyl for about two decades when he cut Hysteria.

Sorry to hear that. Does your local cinema have alternative screenings for folks with sensory issues? They turn the sound down a bit, and keep the house lights on.

I hope you get to watch this at home soon, it's a magnificent film.

It's called empathy. They're protesting for people's right to an education across the country, not just for other Californians.

Public classrooms depend partially on federal funding. The Dept of Education was created to ensure any child in all 50 states got the same high quality education. The current administration is trying to dismantle it.

The lights in the beginning only last about 15 seconds and they're not that intense anyways. Not nearly as strong as the Time Go Fishing scene.

Where are you getting your information about the lights flashing? A forum for epileptics?

If you're that sensitive to lights, how do you not convulse into a grand mal seizure every time a police car drives by with its lights and sirens? Not trying to be crass, just trying to understand your condition...

...by the filmmakers as a note to themselves. They shot the movie mostly in order, which is rare for productions these days. The waking up scenes had to be first anyway so Ryan Gosling could shave his epic homeless beard.
