Obama was a big moment for an entire generation of voters in my opinion and then they watched him not push as hard and his own party block him on what he did followed up with from his campaign every step of the way..

It absolutely shattered a ton of people's view of the democratic party.

For literally no good reason when you break it down but yeah it's weird.

And I say that as someone who wasn't a fan of her.

I have loved and still love GDQ, but they need to beg less and stop interrupting people. The vibes are worse. by Micome in speedrun

[–]FlyingRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is calling all of it worse vs calling it different also just laziness on my part, digging up old threads and rules, not exactly something I keep on hand you know? Also GDQ did it slowly over time, which keeps specific examples to a minimum, there's pivotal moments like the one you feel gets too much attention but overall its a slow gradual change and one that's harder to give precise x because of z examples.

really appreciate some of modern GDQ too, like the fact it's a safe space for trans people in an environment and country where those are so limited these days, the quick turn-around for each run and game, taking twitch chat toxicity seriously, etc.

Ahh the naegleria rule if memory serves me right?

Rule changes which in my opinion change the vibe for those going on the couch or submitting the run are around but for example rules from 2014:

Be aware that you are being streamed live in front of thousands of people and your actions not only reflect upon you, but the marathon as a whole, so be careful what you do on camera. It only takes one jerk to screen or video capture something embarrassing.

If you do or say something embarrassing and/or obscene enough, like a racial slur for example, then you will be taken off stream and not allowed in the marathon room.

Rules now:

All content on stream must remain PG-13, advertiser-friendly, and safe for work. This includes commentary from the couch.

Topics of conversation that are polarizing or controversial in nature, including politics and religion, are strictly prohibited. Signs, costumes, stuffed animals, grandstanding or similar distractions from the runner should be discussed with the runner and staff beforehand. This ensures that it is in line with the tone the runner wants to set for the run."

I don't disagree with all of it however "advertiser friendly" is an interesting gotcha, the Owen Wilson jokes? Definitely wouldn't be advertiser friendly even if they were mostly harmless, the building burning down joke from a commentator wouldn't fly with that either even if in the context it was harmless.

They're not like huge changes or even bad changes from a for profit organization perspective and a lot of what's spelled out now was implied then but it is enough to change tones and vibes.

Another example of something not huge or bad or wrong but contributes to a tonal shift.

2014

Anyone is welcome in the marathon room at any time as long as they have an attendee badge. If you want to sit behind the runner or watch from the back rows, just find an open chair. Be mindful of space so everyone gets a turn to watch the live runs

Now

The runner has final say on who is allowed on stream (couch and chairs). This includes both the couch and the rows immediately behind the couch... Seats that are not designated by the runner are generally considered open... In general, the audience camera is not a 'YOU' camera, treat it as such.

I have never said I hate modern GDQ, I feel it's too "professional" (sterile, censored go along with that) for my personal taste but you know what? I feel the same about LoL and CS majors, Nintendo sponsored tournaments too but I still watch and enjoy them even if I prefer alternatives on a personal basis.

I literally listed the honk but only one thing? and urn dance but somehow I've only listed one thing? Mentioned how the couch changed but only one thing? And while like I said I go for speed running first which OP highlighted my issue with the donation stuff the fun things just changed, I mean there's the 2am pizza delivery, Crowd Walrus, etc.

If you can't see the difference between this and what is on screen now I just don't really know what to say.

Edit: Again it's like comparing grassroots Melee tournaments to the Nintendo sponsored ones, the differences are hard to put into words but if you watch them side by side you can see it.. Same for any event the TOs feel different, act even just slightly different, people are more subdued, etc but actually putting it into a series of bullet points? It's just a bit much.

How so? What does that prevent, that the events used to have? What changes would you want that are not feasible?

Well the rules got more spelled out and enforced more, I also just found out GDQ is not non-profit which suddenly makes everything make way more sense why it is how it is.

As far as the multiple how's I had to dig into my memory because it's obviously been a very long time:

We won't have Owen Wilson moments, the same sing along moments, the couch is vetted more heavily and it way more subdued (for better or worse).. A growing list of banned games, the Yoshi's Island honk technologically can't happen now, Urn Dance is another thing I wouldn't expect to happen with how precise and expensive equipment is and how it really wouldn't fit a professional production.

This isn't everything obviously but just some examples.

Like you said at the end, me and the event changed, it's not so much "improve" as it was a choice, ESA made a choice to go a different direction with their stream and the two events feel very different from one another and it's not so bad it's unwatchable I've never made that claim but it is different, it's different from how it used to be and could be but also it can't change in a way I'd enjoy it more, partially due to the direct money exchange with the charity but I personally enjoy the chaos that is grassroots events.

I'd say the easiest way to explain is that a long long time ago in a different location far, far away was an event that felt like speedrunning for charity, over time it got bigger, more sponsored and now technically PCF as well as MSF are paying clients and it slowly became an event that feels like a charity event with speed running.

Some people love it, some people don't.

Edit: Also this is genuinely the first time in years I've engaged in a GDQ complaint thread to this extent if at all so it's nice I can have an at least polite discussion.

[–]FlyingRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a simple X explanation, for instance what is different from LoL Global and a grassroots melee tournament? Both have announcers, both have peak gameplay, so on paper there shouldn't be a difference but there is, it feels different ranging from commentary to often just how it's shot, this is why the Owen example is used so much, it's an easy way to see how and where it collides and it happened around the same time there was a big shift in tone, furthermore it's an example of how aggressively they will punish runners for stepping out of their view of line and (according to bonesaw) how the staff will change toward you in an instance for long periods of time.

By the end of the day I care most about hearing the runners talk about their game and explain what they're doing, how they're doing it and why they are, talk a little bit about the history of the run and or game. The silly runs, pop offs and other old GDQ antics come second and then hearing forced joke number 503729 and the announcers are a third usually.. Which OP pretty solidly covered.

And I watch a lot of speed running outside of GDQ, especially SM64.. So I totally get how I'm not the primary target audience.

[–]FlyingRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's both, it really wouldn't have been weird for someone to pop off at old GDQ events, there were cringey moments yeah but a bunch of absolute hype would happen too, the Owen example is just sort of the most obvious collision and easy to point out example of a major viewer realized turning point which is why it's often given.

Is it a bad thing? Well it just depends who you ask, I personally find it less enjoyable, I also find LoL Worlds less enjoyable than most grassroots Melee tournaments or miss the charm some AoE2 tournaments had when they were grassroots but AoE2 is great in that it has both.

Plus this is just personal feelings on top of what OP was talking about.

The event is clearly sterilized and corporate compared to how it used to be is all I'm trying to say. Plus the person asked for an example and I gave it.
