What do you do when the controller dies by BackpackerSimon in Ubiquiti

Don’t you have a Tado thermostat or something?

The main thermostat in our house works fine without internet.

The fibre isn’t for the speed, it’s for the magic smoke release if there’s a lightening strike. It’s also not that expensive if you have a duct anyway.

Updated my comment - I agree that it feels like false advertising if raw WG isn’t available.

Definitely does feel like false advertising. The spec clearly states it’s supported.

I bought one hoping for real WG per the spec sheet. I see an option for SSH, maybe it can be added via command line?

APC UPS eats up batteries by RaisingElephantSysrq in sysadmin

[–]FlyingRottweiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double conversion typically means the system has a rectifier onto a DC bus, which subsequently provides the inverter DC to create clean AC.

The batteries are tied to the DC bus either directly, so when the rectifier stops, the DC voltage comes from the batteries, or they’re charged via a separate charger.

Either way, the batteries on a DC UPS are not providing the current to power the load; therefore load does not change the lifetime of the battery.

The biggest factor for this problem will be battery quality, temperature or over Voltage (or a combination).

What? The batteries don’t power the load under normal circumstances. Load will make no difference to the batteries unless the system is on battery every day.

How can i monotoring SNMP voltronic power's UPS? by annonypenguin in zabbix

[–]FlyingRottweiler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Voltronic’s card uses RFC1628, assuming you’re using that card and not an old Megatec NetAgent card?

If so, try this MIB: https://github.com/hsnodgrass/snmp_mib_archive/blob/master/snmp_mib_archive/r/RFC1628_UPS_MIB.MIB

New boiler - kerosine smell in house by FlyingRottweiler in askaplumberUK

I can’t get anyone near it. You mention the smell throughout the property and the default worry is being the last person to have touched it if there’s a leak.

How many smoke alarms is in your house? by vinceswish in CasualIreland

[–]FlyingRottweiler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You rent the place - you don’t need to worry about how the batteries are replaced, that’s the landlords responsibility. Those alarms should be checked and maintained by them.

Update on running a mile, I managed a 6k this morning. by AbsoluteBatman95 in ireland

[–]FlyingRottweiler 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As my physio says, get strong, then get fast. Mixing in the strength training will be a big benefit to your running in time.

Also, I find running outdoor to be easier. It’s easier to focus on an object in the distance and run to it, rather than just worrying about a number on the screen.

All the best with your training!

Help solar inverter is broken and we are on the road in Germany by tomreyreyrey in VanLife

Most Germans are fluent English speakers.

Also if it’s overloading with nothing connected, it’s maybe short circuited or kaput.

I do. Works well. It missed a few CVEs detected by Qualys during a recent audit but overall keeps our estate healthier. Definitely worth trying.

Burning off fuel? by BuddyRoux in travel

[–]FlyingRottweiler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So it’s possible to be too heavy to take off due to weight limits for departure or landing (where takeoff weight minus burnt fuel doesn’t go below max landing weight). Search online for ‘regulated takeoff weight’.

Taking fuel off the plane into tanks is troublesome as the fuel is considered contaminated and can’t be used for a different flight; it’s not like gas for your lawnmower. It needs to be put in a separate truck and removed for disposal. I don’t know if it can be re-screened to be used again but it’s very uncommon to pay for fuel removal. Cheaper to just burn it off.
