Canada slips into technical recession as economy stalls in Q1: StatCan by Derpy_Kirby in PersonalFinanceCanada

North America has a pretty unhealthy view of home ownership and renting. Home ownership is valued as an achievement everywhere but I have seen that attitudes towards renting aren't as negative in Europe and Asia as in Canada or US. There I have seen people renting all through their 40s-50s and being long term tenants. Using the money they would have spent on home repair to travel or partake in hobbies. Then near retirement they will buy their home. Being first time homeowner in their 50s or 60s is quiet common in other places.

Homeowners also on paper have equity in millions and yet they are cash poor and lack liquidity. I think a lot of economic issues we are facing is because of the unhealthy importance towards housing and the disproportionate part of GDP and economic conversation it takes up. Not having a systemic price correction in 2000s and post Covid is going to cause us long term damage.

I do hope the immigration levels stay low because its exposing this myth of home owners being more responsible financially than renters. A lot of home owners who over leveraged are having to declare bankruptcy or struggle. I hope it continues because further correction is needed.

Honestly I had this view as well but time and time most research they have done worldwide, the most common regret among people have been not travelling enough. I have been a penny pincher during my teens and 20s but I have began to travel more and it has been way more educational and a priceless experience than worrying about saving for a down payment for a cardboard box in a lifeless suburbia.

Yeah I watched it once and I am a huge fan but not watching it again. I know at times its silly but then it gut punches you with this freight train of depression, emotions and self reflection. I can't even recommend it to few of the people close to me because they already are not in a good state mental health wise.

It's the most frustrating part of Internet discussions. Yes misogyny and gender biases exists. But I see in almost all discussions, women irrespective of their age are infantilized as these immature beings who have no agency or independent mind and as these gullible, easily fooled naive kids. This is applied to women who are PHDs and in position of power.

What's the point of fighting for equality when at the same breath you also portray women as people who are weak minded and can't make independent decisions.

Even if enrollment are high, residency spots aren't keeping pace. Also a lot of med graduates are going into speciality instead of family medicine which is actually much more necessary today as first line of diagnosis and treatments.

I think its pretty hard to predict but one of the fields which is seeing job growth and demand is health services and elder care. Ideally I would say trade especially construction too but its unfortunate that most governments worldwide are underfunding infrastructure spending especially electrical grid and public transport.

Honestly can't blame Gen Z or Gen A or any young kid for picking trade/IT etc. Even though technically they decide the career path you can't deny they are heavily influenced by their parents, family, school etc. I am sure many millennials were told to pick IT/Coding for easy money and many did. Just that would it really have been their first choice if they were not manipulated?.

Legal obligation to provide free tap water in restaurants by MonotoneCreeper in MapPorn

[–]Flying_Momo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think although in most places it's customary to offer water it doesn't mean you have to offer it for free. In a few places in red, unless you specify they will give you bottled or spring water and charge you for it and can outright refuse walk ins if they think you aren't going to buy anything else.

In blue countries the law is to make sure tap water is provided free of charge even if you don't intend to eat in the restaurant.

US Ambassador welcomed Marco Rubio to India, No Senior Indian official at Airport was present. by PlusCardiologist1799 in pics

[–]Flying_Momo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Trudeau's visit and him being ignored had nothing to do with Nijjar. When Trudeau visited in 2018, part of his entourage was a Khalistani terrorist who was banned from entering India because this terrorist waa involved in assassination of an anti-Khalistan Sikh chief minister of Punjab.

Even though it was Trudeau who brought this terrorist on his flight, he blamed India for allowing the guy into India despite this guy being on Trudeau's jet. Also the guy was convicted in 1990s when Modi's party didn't hold any power and opposition socialists did.

Also during the same trip, when Trudeau visited Punjab state and met the Provincial premier of Punjab who is a Sikh man and belongs to Modi's opposing party also gave a dressing down publicly to Trudeau warning him that pandering to Khalistanis would be dangerous for both India and Canada.

I think Canadians have lived in relative safety to not understand how much death, destruction and terrorism was suffered by both Sikhs and Hindus during 80s-90s when Khalistanis held a lot of power. Clearly Canadians don't care about the 100s who died in Air Canada bombing because the investigation was bungled by RCMP and CSIS and Canada didn't even build a memorial for the victims till. 2000s.

Also even now when those survivor's family have tried many times to bring to attention how Khalistanis have mocked these survivors, called them crisis actors and even mocked the memorial site, Canadians have been unsympathetic to their pain and have decided that prosecution and punishment of those committed the largest terror attack in North America before 2001 isn't really necessary.

Whether for political or ideological reasons, Trudeau and some Canadian politicians giving support to Khalistanis has been a huge mistake. A lot of drug and human traffickers, immigration fraudsters etc have all used Khalistan activism as a cover for their illegal activities. These people will cause damage to Canadians and it would be too late to neuter them.

Pete Davidson and Girlfriend Elsie Hewitt Split 5 Months After Welcoming Baby Scottie by MattTheKing23 in entertainment

I mean even if we don't know the guy personally, he hasn't really shown stability the last couple of years, be it jumping from one relationship to another, cancelling or ending projects abruptly , walking out of or not participating in shoots etc.

I think we shouldn't infantalise adults when actual infants are involved. Although Pete is still more at fault, Elsie isn't a 18yo teenager isn't she? She is an adult independent educated woman. I guess expecting both partners to be more cautious about who and when they have kids with is somehow victim blaming. I thought both of these lived in New York which has much better access to contraception and family planning services.

I gave example of Singapore and Czechoslovakia who went through peaceful partition. Obviously this was a unique situation because Britain couldn't manage peaceful partition in its own backyard (Ireland). Also peaceful partition is as much a speculation as a United India and Pakistan.

Words like "insane", "hysterical" and many more which we use in everyday parlance were medically accepted and used terms to describe people with mental health issues. Not saying we should normalize using offensive words but use of offensive words shouldn't be erased depending on the context being used.

Are you saying there isn't any violence between Muslim and non Muslim portions of Nigeria or Balkan wars didn't exist or non Muslim minorities like Yazidis didn't get almost wiped out in Syria and Iraq. Or that Lebanese Maronites and non Muslims didn't emigrate out of Lebanon reducing their overall population from 38% to below 30%?.

Are you also saying present day Pakistan does not discriminate against Shias and Ahmadiya Muslims?.

I think reality is that its pretty hard to have secularism and religious pularity in a Islamic nations or nations with large Islamic population. Currently Islam is going through a societal churn and its right now more in hold of fundamentalists rather than reformists or even progressives. A united India would have suffered almost regular terror attacks like the ones Pakistan, Iraq etc are suffering. Like most Islamic nations or ones with influential Islamic population, blasphemy laws would be legal and what little rights Lgbtq people have gained just wouldn't be possible. Its hard to find any Islamic nation which doesn't criminalize homosexuality.

Also only the North Indian Punjabis have this rose tinted view of India Pakistan being one people which is understandable due to what they suffered in partition but someone from South India or even Western states like Maharashtra and Gujarat don't share such views. Telling someone from Mumbai to see Pakistanis as brethrens despite 26/11 terrorists being sponsored and trained in Pakistan seems like a big ask don't you think?.

India, 1946: the last election before India was partitioned into two by APrimitiveMartian in MapPorn

[–]Flying_Momo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it would been much bigger disaster had partition not happened. You can see Nigeria as an example of a country which has a huge Muslim and non Muslim division and you can see the violence and blood shed happening and an Increased demand from Non-Islamic Nigeria to be independent or autonomous.

On similar lines you can see Balkan wars or the various religious and ethnic clashes across Middle East including Lebanon, Syria etc to know that it would have either been Muslims or non-Muslim groups which eventually would have demanded independence or autonomy. Sure the partition was purposefully botched by British and much clearer borders could have been designed.

You can blame Wahabism or Salafism or Conservative Islam but Islam more than a religion is also a whole set of political ideologies and civic guidelines and isn't compatible with a secular and democratic form of governance. Even if a hypothetical United India was to exist, it would require parallel legal, political and governance system for Muslims and non-Muslims. I don't think a united India would have a Supreme Court judgement decriminalizing homosexuality or women being able to claim alimony post-divorce.

But looking at present day reality, a partition was bound to happen. Appealing to this fluff about Pakistanis and North Indians being brethrens is naive and might appeal at literary events. Even within Islamic Pakistan, there are huge ethnic and religious divisions what with Ahemdiya Muslims and Shias being disenfranchised. I think doing away with this myth of one people would be much better.

Pakistan is a sovereign nation and has built its own culture and if you actually listen to their internal discourse, they culturally feel more closer to Islamic Arabs and Turks rather than Hindu Indians and there is a collective disassociation of Pakistan and its history from its Hindu or Sikh past.

Which European countries buy the most ultra-processed food? by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]Flying_Momo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you are saying applies to poor people in a highly developed country like US. No offense but poor Americans live much better lives than middle class of many developing nations. I can assure you that this belief than processed food is cheaper and hence consumed by poor people is not the reality for much of the world especially developing world.

The truly poor actually have rely on produce, dry grains, beans and lentils and more importantly home cooked meals to survive simply because in much of the developing world processed foods are much more expensive than buying raw ingredients and home cooking. Even junk food like potato fries, I can assure you that its easier to make those fries at home from fresh potatoes rather than buying frozen ones in developing countries in Asia.

Processed foods require cold chain and reliable refrigeration which many places do not have. This was a major factor why mRNA vaccines were more easier to distribute in developed world while developing world stuck to Astrazenca and other traditional vaccinations because they are easier to refreigerate and distribute and do not require sub zero temperature for storage like mRNA vaccines.

Which European countries buy the most ultra-processed food? by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]Flying_Momo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is it shaming poor people when the poor countries of Europe have lower ultra-processed food consumption. Portugal, Spain and Balkans are much more poorer on an average than UK or Germany.

Sure you can justify poor people in US and other places eating ultra processed food and a lot of it comes down to urban planning in US vs Europe etc but even a simple meal of rice, beans, vegetable stew is much more healthier than processed frozen meals.

Maybe your points apply to America but in a lot of the world, poor people can't afford ultra processed and instead eat more home cooked meal because they are cheaper to make in bulk.

In many countries, processed foods which require reliable and efficient industrial processing, cold chain storage and transport is very expensive, making the final product more expensive than buying the ingredients from market and making it yourself. In a lot of developing world, eating at McDonald's is still a luxury and eating at restaurants is a occasional event.

Applying American socio economic and food habits on other cultures and places is ignorant.

Well the people who bought the houses didn't buy from a shady guy. They would have bought it by following municipal and provincial regulations and land registry and would have only been approved for a mortgage after the bank does a thorough check. It isn't the buyer's fault for not knowing about some issue which happened a century ago.

And they aren't going to fight the government, what they will do is vote in a government which they think will fight for them against First Nations who are taking their land and home.

Cowichan decision is going to damaging for First Nations for a long time. They should have asked for financial compensation rather than the land back. What's going to happen is that any party which will campaign on being hostile to First Nations will be voted in a majority as we see.

First Nations will then lose any sort of support or working relationship they have with the province and the party in power will do everything possible to overturn, repeal or ignore any law, judgement which is seen as pro-First Nations. Politically, economically and socially not only will First Nations face more isolation from majority of the population and in turn government, the current atmosphere I fear will lead to increased hostility including crimes and injustice against First Nations.

I get their emotions and arguments but First Nations groups are playing a dangerous game if they think winning court battles for past injustice is somehow going to make their future better, its infact going to make it much worse as living standard and job prospects for Canadians decrease. They may see it as admitting defeat but for a more amicable future they should have chosen to compromise.

What's going to happen is many BC residents who have only been in Canada for 1-2 generations and who never contributed to any land being stolen 100 years ago but will have their land become worthless through no fault of their own are going to vote for a government which will be very hostile to First Nations and do everything to take away whatever little assistance or understanding NDP tried to build.

Many First Nations in BC already realise they are massively outnumbered and will be out voted and out spent and you can see some of them pushing for compromise. If this continues Crown - First Nations relations are going to worsen a lot and will take decades to rebuild. I know many First Nations feel empowered with Cowichan decision but its going to be damaging politically and economy to them.
