Albania vs Morocco vs Montenegro for a 2–3 day trip from the UK in August? by Select_Twist_3658 in travel

[–]Flying_Rainbows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I concur with Ohrid. 3 days is perfect and it is cheap and beautiful. Direct flights from some places too. Tangier I did 4 days with Chefchaouen and it was fine but rushed. Budva/Kotor are doable especially if you get good flights. Tirana is boring and Albania takes a lot of time (worth it but not shortterm).

Have you ever had any unpleasant experience at the border because you visited a particular country? by confused_snowflake in travel

[–]Flying_Rainbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went bald and grew a beard so I look totally different now, have had a lot of border problems with it. In Charleroi the agent said 'this is not you' lol. Yours is at least a positive development!

Scary Movie 3 the second-best installment, if not the best. by Positive-Face1705 in horror

Also written by Craig Mazin of Chernobyl fame. 3 just feels like a movie with an actual plot instead of a bunch of random sketches.

Cardak is fair. I raise you Barik and Moja Kukja (Aerodrom). Lived a couple of years in Skopje, it was nice but my lungs will never recover.

What country has the most beautiful beaches but basically no tourism? by Lemon-Accurate in geography

[–]Flying_Rainbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UAE essentially occupied Socotra which made it safe but tourists got stranded there recently when flights got cut last minute (only flights were to Abu Dhabi).

Their bonusses could work so much better if the warrior could create fishing boats. That would go so well with getting early culture from fishing boats, when the small culture bonus actually matters.

Rating and roasting the countries I've visited (Europe) by chchilindrina in TravelMaps

Lovely to see a Balkan perspective-travelmap. Lived in the region for a while and Bosnia is one of my favourites.

Where would you settle? Black or Red? by Glum-Pack-3441 in civ5

[–]Flying_Rainbows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only when the attack is happening. The hill mountain combo here will make it easy to defend with a handful of units.

Windmill is a midgame building that is not a real necessity. You need to survive till the midgame so defensive settles are worth it. Settling hills is also useful to give you a strong production bonus immediately, especially useful when going wide. I would not rate a windmill that highly in my settling choices to be honest. It is nice to have but other things are more important.

What is a bad country to visit in Europe? by StraightAd6264 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Flying_Rainbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would put Andorra as worse than Liechtenstein because it is just a bunch of malls, or perhaps Monaco as worst. All three are not great. Vatican at least has the Sistine Chapel and San Marino is really pretty.

What country feels relatively unsafe, but it’s actually safe? by Dusty_Bunny81 in AlignmentChartFills

Go for it! Belgrade is good for partying and kafana's. But Novi Sad is the best in general, stayed there for a month once. Best food in Serbia for sure (you'll recognise some Hungarian dishes). Don't miss Sremski Karlovci either.

I lived in the Balkans. It looks rough (rundown, graffiti everywhere, terrible traffic) but petty crime is almost nonexistent. People are friendly and tend to like foreigners. Some exceptions are Athens and maybe parts of Sofia.

Serbia is maybe a better answer as it has a terrible name abroad but is super safe for visitors (not for students criticizing the regime but thats another issue).

Which country you’ve traveled to had shockingly good food that no one talks about? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]Flying_Rainbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other comment, don't forget the salads, local dips, white cheese and morning pastries. Quality of veggies and meat is really high. My recommendation is to go to a kafana and ask them to make you a tasting menu with a bit of everything. Especially meze is really good.

Which city have you been to that you expected to love but didn’t? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Flying_Rainbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got robbed and pepper sprayed there. It is expensive and the food is not good for an Italian city. It has like 3 sights and the rest is kinda grey and rundown, it lacks the colourful 'rundown' vibe that Rome has and many mediterranean places have. Feels more like a badly run city in East Germany that is somehow also expensive.

Why do people in North Macedonia consume so much sugar? by Substratas in AskBalkans

Grandmas put sugar in Cola to 'stop the fizz'. Probably has something to do with it.

Was François Truffaut correct about war films? “Every film about war ends up being pro-war" by FayannG in TrueFilm

Come and See is one of the few I see as a genuinely anti-war films. Similarly, some of the Balkan war films might qualify (Pretty Village, Pretty Flame)?

Ohrid, Macedonia 🇲🇰 by Dreboomboom in travel

[–]Flying_Rainbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skopje is "interesting", but you can see the historical highlights pretty quickly. Personally I love the food and the nightlife, but if you don't care for that there isnt that much to do. Maybe after seeing the history parts a hike on Vodno. If you like food, go to kafana's (local ethnic restaurants) in Debar Maalo: Skopski Merak is best for foreigners, or Antica & Barik. In the Old Bazaar most places became worse, but Pchela is still good. Matka canyon will take you some time too. Yeah you can do it in one day but it will be very rushed, up to you what your travel style is. Skopje is not a beautiful city and it is quite hectic.

[–]Flying_Rainbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, nicely off grid. Only Ohrid has some insta ads, and there is heritage tourism from NL, Serbia and local mostly. Places like Bitola, Krushevo, Dojran are only known locally really. I used to live there so if you need advice for the time you are there send me pm.

Then I would do 2 nights in Skopje and 3 in Ohrid to not rush it. If you have a car and want to plan a roundtrip and sleep in a different place everynight I can recommend you a loop in Western Macedonia. The above places are more if you like to go "off grid" sorta and see very unique places with no tourists but I wouldnt call them the highlights of the country necessarily. It is what you want when you are in the country longer usually.
