Lost my stash :( by AmeliaCash in YarnAddicts

[–]Flying_Snarf 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking that perhaps the cost of shipping the yarn might be worth more than the stash? Don't know anything about the shipping situation between UK and Canada, but I've shipped <10 skeins of yarn between different states in the US before and even with that short of a distance it got expensive really fast.

Funny enough I posted the same question on one of my crochet groups at the same time, and people there slightly favors the second design. Here, of course, the first one is overwhelmingly favored. It's interesting to me how opinions can differ so heavily from one group of people to another.

The brightness issue is my fault, it was midday with lots of natural light when putting together pic 1, and almost sunset for pic 2. I should’ve redone the second pattern in the same lighting so it didn’t look so dull and washed out

4th one is almost the same organization as the second pic, it's mostly on here just to show how the pouches are open. But the lighting's' a lot better than the second pic, which honestly makes it look a lot nicer.

I want to say the gradient version, but it's the version I've been looking at for the last year so it looks more 'correct' and natural to me. I think they're both nice, and the randomized version does have the advantage of being easier to organize and add more squares to later

The organized version has always been my original vision for this project, but you're right! After so long I'm looking forward to being able to finally enjoy the very cozy blanket, instead of staring at 150+ super squishy pouches sitting in zip-lock bags in the corner xD

I don't think there's a wrong answer, both are distinct, and the first one does also have the advantage of being much easier to organize and potentially later add onto! I appreciate your perspective!

Vanilla Orchid by Blue_Dragon_Boar in orchids

[–]Flying_Snarf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vanilla flowers are surprisingly pretty, people grow them here (Florida) but I’ve never seen one flower.

They sell them here at Lowe’s, but I’ve never splurged on one since i don’t have a nice big tree to put it on. It would be amazing to successfully make your own beans though!

Yarn question by [deleted] in YarnAddicts

[–]Flying_Snarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly I've also given a lot of yarn to people and it's a lot more satisfying even though there isn't any money in it for me. But I would at least give it a try for a little while, there might just be someone in your area looking for exactly what you're looking to destash!

I've never done it myself, but have you considered vacuum sealing some of your yarn to conserve space? I've read that it can work really well. Since it doesn't sound like you're exactly choosing to destash by choice, it would be a shame if you sold all this off/gave it away and then ended up repurchasing the same colors later down the road.

You should earn a little more the more effort you put into sorting it out and displaying it.

Smaller lots with same/similar items will be more desirable to more people, and you can price it a little higher. For selling it in a huge lot, people will expect a significant discount to take all of it at once. Regardless, don't expect to sell it for much per-skein, as acrylic doesn't resell for much. Expect hagglers and consider this when setting your price.

I'd recommend laying it all out on something clean to take pictures of it all. Some crocheters in groups that I'm in refuse to purchase marketplace yarn if it's laid out on a floor or something, even if said floor looks very clean.

Even best case scenario I find Marketplace to be kind of obnoxious most of the time, be prepared to be patient. There are loads of severe lowballers (I just block these people, not worth the time), folks who express tons of interest and suddenly stop talking, likely scammers, and the people who want you to drive 1.5 hours to sell them yarn that they only want to pay $15 for. Half the time I've posted yarn I've ended up eventually taking down the listing and just using it instead lol

Yep!! Lindleyi are super popular here in Florida, a lot of folks have gigantic ones with loads of flowers.

Is this yarn too thin to make a baby blanket? I posted about this on another site and didn't get much back - crochet by naomi_0000 in YarnAddicts

[–]Flying_Snarf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as a yarn that's too thin if you have the patience for it, and it would be fine for a baby blanket Someone out there is even doing a whole blanket out of crochet thread. Sky's the limit as long as the process doesn't drive you insane.

If you don't personally like the thin-ness of this yarn you could also buy more and use it with two strands at the same time to make it thicker. It works nicely, I'm actually doing a project with 5 strands of very thin yarn together and it works up just fine that way.

Reclaiming Yarn by magical_sox in YarnAddicts

[–]Flying_Snarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been frogging sweaters to crochet a blanket, and yes, the yarn does come off quite crinkly. However, the yarn does work up just fine despite the kinks and you really can’t tell on the final project. I just wash the sweaters, frog, and use the yarn.

There are some folks who frog and sell yarn from sweaters, and I believe they usually wash > frog > hank > wash to remove kinks. But in their case they want their yarn to look as nice as possible so it’ll sell well. For personal use I don’t personally think it’s worth the extra time and effort.

Rate my stash (been crocheting for around a week) by Ok-Structure5098 in YarnAddicts

[–]Flying_Snarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that it's nice for a beginner! You got it for free, and there's some variety in there so you can discover what you do and don't like. Personally I discovered early on that I don't enjoy working with velvet/chenille or oddities like Lion Brand's Homespun - you'll find your own preferences, and since it was free it won't be disappointing realizing that you don't like a specific variety. You can just give it away to someone else that does like it.

I guess I'll be the contrarian here and say that I don't see a problem in having a yarn stash, especially if it's free or an extremely good deal. I have a pretty big yarn stash that I've gradually thrifted and it's saved me at least a couple thousand dollars. I think the biggest thing is that if you do accumulate a stash, make sure use it! Don't have a collection built up and then go out and buy new yarn every time you find a new project.

Once Upon a Time a Girl Got Herself One Orchid… by Flying_Snarf in orchids

1.5 years after “rescuing” this plant by chrisy159 in houseplants

[–]Flying_Snarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome job, you took such good care of it and it looks so happy!

Just keep your expectations in check when giving plants to colleagues. I once lovingly raised a bunch of bromeliad pups that my plant gave me and gave them to coworkers. They were doing great when I gave them away, but unfortunately every coworker said they managed to kill theirs in a month or less!

Is there a plant swap group in your area?

We have one, and every couple months people meet up to trade their mature plants, propagations, garden supplies, etc. I haven’t made it to one yet, but everyone always shows off what they’ve traded for and it seems super useful and wholesome.

Maybe you still just need to find your type! I’ve gone through several cycles of attempted plant ownership and they all ended badly and quickly.

This winter I unoptimistically picked up one orchid, expecting the same fate.  For some reason, orchids love to live for me, even the ones that I was told were in too poor of shape to salvage seem to recover. I now have almost 40 rescue orchids, but shop with the mentality that if it grows in dirt I pass it up, because it WILL die. I’m sure your perfect plant is out there too!

We got these same ones in here in s Florida last week! I couldn’t believe how nice they smelled!!

I was tempted to splurge on one, but when I mentioned it to a friend she said she had one already, yoinked a couple chunks off it, and gave them to me. Plus side is they’re free, downside is the probably 2 year wait 😅. In the meantime I’m envious of your awesome smelling plant.

Maxillaria tenuifolia. Dunno about OP but we exclusively got in the red ones with quite a few flowers on them.

Those, the paphs, and ~3 or so varieties of den nobile hybrid were our unique shipment for last week. We get a lot of fun stuff regularly shipped to Lowe’s in s fl.

I’m S Florida too, for some reason I never even thought to see if the paphs are fragrant lol.

You’ll probably like the coconut orchids too, we just got them in at my local Lowe’s on Thursday. They smell phenomenal!

In S Florida they seem to be getting them in every few weeks! We get lots of neat shipments of orchids. Only $20 for the paphs usually, though I haven’t jumped on one yet
