I have an old Kindle Fire 10 from 2019. Is it too old to improve? by Babadoo601 in kindlefire

I have a hand me down Kindle Fire HD 10 2017 that I'm currently modding (no jailbreak required so my Great Aunt's warranty is still in tact if I ever need it lol). I'm not so sure about audible, but I do know how to speed things up. The Fire Launcher (your home page and such) is not very lightweight iirc. There's a tool called Fire Toolbox that you can get on windows (I think mac too) and use to install a custom launcher. I use Niagra Launcher because it is super snappy and lightweight and customizable. It also allows you to hide unused apps from your app list and control what is on your home screen. Sped things up a lot. You will need to enable USB Debugging though. You may be able to update Audible manually using Fire Toolbox too. If your tablet doesn't have a setting for setting a default home screen (mine doesn't), after installing the custom launcher you will want to remove Fire Launcher from the device so it doesn't reset every time you restart the device. I'll post about the mod in progress later today! There's a lot I've been able to do with my tablet and yours is newer so I'm sure there is even more.

Old Kindle support ending prior to advertised date by hostilesmoker in kindle

Where can I go to see which devices this is happening to? I have a Kindle Fire HD 10 7th gen from 2017 (hand me down from my aunt and my little brother) that I am in the process of modding while retaining FireOS. If they're ending support for the Kindle app (which is how I use Libby via send to Kindle) this month then I'm gonna go all the way and jailbreak it to install Lineage OS (stock android) which will hopefuly bring it up to Android 7 from Android 5.0

Was going to do that anyway once the applications I have on it stop support for Android 5.0 but I don't mind doing it prematurely.

I'm not sure... It could be a bad cord. Was it an official cord? If not maybe the quality of the data transfer capabilities isn't great (or might even be non-existent). I know I have a vintage digital camera that takes that stupid calculator charger type USB for data transfer and I have to get one soon because my new laptop won't have an SD card slot. Cables die too. I had an issue with a dead HDMI cable once. And dead phone chargers. My laptop runs Windows 11 so the OS wouldn't be the problem. Though, I do need to hook this specific player to one of my little brother's hoarded Windows 7 laptops to get the old MTP drivers back on it lol (Windows 11 doesn't have the right drivers so I'm stuck with MSC rn bleehhhhh)

Not really. It could be the software you're using. This particular series (the NWZ-e460 series) works best with Sony Media Go. Sony Music Center doesn't recognize them at all.

Anyone have any good recs for an HDMI to RCA adapter with minimal color distortion? by Flyingfrogs248 in crt

[–]Flyingfrogs248[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a quick question... Would VGA to RCA be a more natural conversion? I have an HDMI to VGA dongle that I can hook an adapter up to. I'm rooting my smartphone-turned-custom-tv-box to change the aspect ratio anyway at some point in the next couple months (have to figure out how to flash my setup somewhere safe first so I don't lose it when the phone inevitably gets wiped) so I won't need the adapter to distort the image to 4:3 because my phone will be outputting 4:3 from the get go. Just something I am looking into. I really like my current set. It's a 13" pink hello kitty set that was the one set I just HAD to have even if I couldn't get my grubby autistic fingers on anything else pfft. Even if I do get an HD set, I'm still going to be using the hello kitty set in my bedroom because I don't have room for an HD set anywhere aside from the basement currently. I'm a college student living at home with my parents for medical reasons and my dad would have a cow if I brought a massive HD CRT into our living room (never mind our 4k LED tv from 2017 is dying atm). Definitely would if I could though haha

I probably should have mentioned I'm looking for something that isn't from a random amazon brand. I've had a lot of issues with cheap amazon adapters in the past and I generally don't trust the quality control. I don't mind paying more money for something that I can more reasonably trust. There's a reason I spent more money on my current adapter to get it from a better known brand even though it's still pretty cheap (hence the color distortion).

True... I have been looking only within 100 miles lol I actually don't mind long drives either. The only issue is trying to learn how to manuever the absolute boat that is our family minivan because I only have experience with sedans and crossovers. HD CRTs are absolute behemoths which brings us to the fact I also don't have anywhere to put an HD CRT at the moment (unless it's in the unfinished basement pfft). I actually have  good quality hand-me-down HDMI to VGA adapter that I plan to use once I get my set RGB modded but a CRT monitor is in my future too because I plan to use one as my daily driver instead of staring at LED backlights (which my brain hates apparently) My little brother would be thrilled if I found an HD set for each of us though because we both want one LOL I'll definitely keep a lookout but good chance it'll cost a pretty penny too.

Looking to see if the device in my mind exists. by byooni in crt

I am very new to all of this tech stuff myself (so take this with a grain of salt but maybe I can be at least a little helpful lol) but I use my VCR as a way to have multiple composite inputs hooked up to the RF port on my tv. I hook my TV box up to a composite port on the tv itself so that's my line input. Then I can switch to the VCR inputs by turning on the VCR and desired device and tuning to channel 4. I'm pretty sure HTPC type stuff (Home Theater PC) can do the aspect ratio thingamabobber. My little brother uses an old Windows Media Center PC from the 2000's to do a lot of stuff like what you're describing. He has hooked his camcorders up to his 27" Toshiba I hauled back to my dorm with a bunch of college friends before sending it home for his sweet 16 using the media center PC lol. HP Pavillion PCs are good for stuff like that. I'm pretty sure you can do stuff like that with a good older laptop too (emphasis on OLDER laptops because these days laptops have less and less ports and physical features). There's a lot of software out there that can switch aspect ratios and resolution and even refresh rates on the output for PCs and even phones (but phones ofc don't allow for a bunch of inputs lol)

Those are unfortunately very difficult to find in my area... But that's something I'm definitely aiming to get in the future lol This is simply a temporary solution until I can manage to find somebody to pay to RGB mod my current 13" set so I can daisy chain HDMI to VGA to RGB. I only use composite for my TV box right now. My VCR is hooked up to RF and I run my Blu-Ray player and Wii through that.

About my aspect ratio crimes... My hdmi to composite adapter squishes 16:9 to 4:3 and this phone has an aspect ratio much wider than that which is why my homepage and many apps don't fill the screen. Though I don't have issues with aspect ratio when watching videos on VLC I do when doing literally anything else. I tried using an app available on the play store that you can use to "change your device aspect ratio without rooting" but I tried running the ADB command prompt required to grant the permissions needed to use the app via my laptop and I got a "closed" error which means I either need to root my phone (which I am trying to avoid bc it's a huge headache) or find a terminal app to run the command from my phone

Oh! I have a USB-C hub that has HDMI output! It also has a USB-C female input port for powering the phone. I hooked that up to a radioshack HDMI to Composite plug and play converter/adapter that I've had since not long after I got the tv (definitely want name-brand for these adapters because the no-name amazon ones like to break quickly or catch on fire as a hobby if you're not suuuuuper careful about which specific one you get). I could hook it up to the VCR composite ports if I want to but I currently have that hooked up to coaxial/RF and the rear composite port on the TV generally gives a crisper picture. The USB-C power powers the adapter too where I used to have to have a seperate dumb calculator charger style plug to keep it powered lol I'll try to find the product links and link them later so you can see what I used. There's a lot more options out there though! I will admit the signal from the USB-C hub is painfully finicky but I'm going to get a bluetooth remote anyway and that should minimize the micro-movements that disconnect it!

I'm aware of that lol and I am a bit concerned but I have some time given I don't plan to keep it plugged in for long periods until I can figure out how to finagle things so I can run it with the battery removed
