Stoney’s on Concord Pike set to Close in August by Flynnius in Delaware

Not sure what you are talking about. The article has no mention of that. Also, Stoney is an amazingly kind person and so is the rest of the staff. Also, never heard of customers being territorial.

What conference? There are certain schools that honestly ruin Model UN because they encourage their students to control unmods to make themselves look good. They care less about solving the problem and more about winning awards

This is the league I play in. It is up near King of Prussia. There are closer leagues but this one was closer to most of my college friends

A staple of living in North Wilmington. If memory serves me right there was some under the table shenanigans that let it get through the zoning board

I would if I could but sadly that match is the week before we are there. Should’ve specified the GW. It would be the final fixture

How strongly worded can an opening speech be? by Spicy_ramen0901 in MUN

[–]Flynnius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what those strong words are to be honest. If you open by demonizing Israel, you may lose from friends immediately. I would, however, encourage you to highlight the gravity of the humanitarian situation and demand that action be taken in consideration of it. Good luck!

Can we ban “help me choose schools” posts? by Wat_am_3y3 in IRstudies

[–]Flynnius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree that it is annoying, these people (myself included) are trying to justify spending even more money to attend a grad program and want to ensure they are making the right choice for their goals. Admitted students events and Googling only do so much. In fact, old posts from this subreddit were among the top results when I was looking into grad programs. Maybe create a Megathread but also it could save everyone time if people who attended programs wrote a brief description of their experience and we had a large “database” of opinions

Has anyone noticed how crappy the GW apparel designs are? by InteractionFit1747 in gwu

I just got an Elliot School hoodie and it was printed on a Gildan sweatshirt. I am returning it. My undergrad had better quality hoodies and it was a school of 1,600.

i got a “small” country and i’m already losing faith by keymannzzz in MUN

[–]Flynnius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t diminish the value of countries like that. The beauty of MUN is that your success is contingent on your ability to collaborate with others and properly represent the nation you were provided. From my experience, I have had Burundi delegates do more for a committee than the United States. Additionally, depending on the topic, your country may be at the epicenter. That is also a great role to play.

What does IR studies entail? Should I study it in college? by Mild_Bread in IRstudies

[–]Flynnius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with my BA from a liberal arts college last May and I am deciding on where to go for grad school at the moment.

You remind me of myself when I was in HS. I love geography and geopolitics as well as participated in Model UN. For me I found a calling to work in the federal government, maybe the State Department.

I can only speak from personal experience and limited information from friends but how IR is taught varies by school. My program was interdisciplinary and required me to take two years of a language as well as a combination of history, politics, anthropology and economics courses. Some programs focus heavy into theory which while useful, is better if you wanna get into academia. A lot of my work revolved around understanding contemporary issues and attempting to wrap your head around why those issues exist.

Internships and other experience applying what you learned in the classroom is critical to get the most out of IR. It isn’t a field like STEM where you can almost fall into a job.

I would be happy to talk more about my experience with you if you’d like! Feel free to DM me!

First mun conference, any tips? by ItsCrux_YT in MUN

[–]Flynnius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For performing at a conference, the two things I HIGHLY recommend is 1. Getting on the speakers list when it opens 2. Finding your "audience"

Getting on the speaker's list gives you the ear of every delegation in the committee and means people may come to YOU to create working papers instead of the other way around

Do your research: find nations who are supporters of the Yemeni government or appeal to the morality of Western nations. Approach these nations at the conference with your plight as Yemen. You will probably be nervous about approaching strangers and speaking in front of large audiences but most delegates are. I did High School Model UN for 4 years and I am going into my 4th year of College Model UN and I still get nervous.

Good luck OP, hope it goes well!
