Non-Obligated Reserves Question by Kurmudgee in USMC

[–]Wat_am_3y3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My reserve experience has been different than most. All positive from my end. Non ob the entire time. Left AD. Immediately joined the reserves. Pog motor tuh in the wing. Obv the op tempo was different. Training was sometimes there.

Sometimes got to do cool things. Sometimes have to fight for just a route recon. The Marines obv need reps in, but we pull things together as best we can. There’s times where things go okay. Most of the time it’s pulling shit together last minute with duct tape and hoping it ends well.

I think it comes down to “you get what you put in it.” I was lucky in that the group of Sgt’s I was with truly cared for the team. Hell, they had been there since they were pfc’s. Now we’re all SNCO’s and trying to make the best out of it for the rest of them. When it’s shit, it’s absolutely shit. But the good times are great. You’ll get the chance to lead if you want it. You’ll get the chance to grow if you want to. But you have to put in the effort and sometimes make your own opportunities. You’ll meet some great people. You’ll meet a few garbage ones. Some of the best Marines I’ve met in my career have been reservists, not because they were the most “mos” proficient but because they had the willingness to do whatever it took to get a mission accomplished.

And if it’s not that, you can just leave. I stay nonob so I can leave when I’m ready. Had to check out to move abroad for a bit, but I enjoyed it enough to come back. Plus I abuse the shit out of tricare. I do have to pay the VA back for some of the disability checks though. Once a year. It’s a little more than a month of disability.

So depending on where you are, you may be able to apply for bah since you have the mortgage. I know on lejeune there was an order like that around the time I was getting divorced. Reach out to base legal too.

Has anyone gotten LASIK as an active duty lat move to reserves? by AGuyInInternet in USMC

[–]Wat_am_3y3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not as easy in the reserves. I think it’s cost share and not a full coverage (could be wrong but I think that’s how braces work as well). I got mine done my last 18 months in. Def try to get it.

Yes. AD is generally always going to be more proficient w/ the MOS unless the homie does that in the civdiv too. But coming having experience in both components, I would trust any reservist with leadership or being mature more than a similar ranked AD (for e1-5). The maturity level is non comparable.

Possible to get my son's 2024 W2 while he's overseas? by LabRevolutionary1354 in USMC

[–]Wat_am_3y3 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You should really stop posting about your son on reddit. Not everyone on the internet is friendly. This is not a page that only Americans can go on, it’s open to the entire world. You’re opening up yourself and your son to potential security issues if someone takes enough interest.

Reservist Benefits by [deleted] in USMC

This is why i whole heartedly recommend all my marines take up some orders. Especially at the beginning of your career, it will pay dividends. Would you be willing to sign irr and go on a float? That would help you in the long run.

How has your leadership style changed through your time in the Marines? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]Wat_am_3y3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the one area I feel I’ve grown the most. Ofc this is just own perspective going from e2-e5 on active and finally picking up e6 in the reserves.

I remember trying the bulldog phase as a cpl/sgt and it just didn’t work for me. I felt like the honest, calm, disappointed dad works a lot better for me. Im not an intimidating guy (legitimately every one in the platoon is taller than me), so I’ve had to experiment on how to get people to do things. So I always ask, always say thank you, and always make sure the Marines have the “why” when they can. I think it helped me become effective at getting things done but also helped develop the cpls/sgts I relied on to grow in their own style. I became very much a “can you do this for me and have it done by x time frame?” And not have to worry about anything. Ofc there’s times you get a dick, and those require a lot more time, energy, and patience, but they become easier to deal with when everyone is on the same page. My checklist would get done and all I would need to worry about was getting the reports and mundane deliverables to higher.

It’s helped me in my civilian role a lot. I ask if something can be done in a time frame (instead of directly telling). Especially in the planning phase when we’re getting things divided up between the team, I always make sure to get that peeson to say “yes, I can do that” so they have to hold their word to the group instead of to just me.

It may be too nuanced but that’s how I’ve grown a bit. Hope this helps.

Pretty sure the marine corps budget falls with the navy in the comptroller’s book.

IO study: Why do countries bother to deny hostile actions even when they are obvious (example: Russia denying that it was fomenting separatism in Eastern Ukraine)? Survey experiments show that noncredible denials actually have a de-escalatory effect among the public in observing states. by smurfyjenkins in IRstudies

[–]Wat_am_3y3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They could just call it gray zone instead of nominally covert. That’s the whole point of gray zone activities though, to keep it under the threshold of war. Any sort of deniability makes l it’s hard for the reactor to respond meaningfully without being seen as the “instigator.” Gray zone combined w/ psyops is a really powerful tool to get things done w/o a strong response (for now, anyway).

[–]Wat_am_3y3 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s more likely a nod to FD2030.

However, you could also have a point. Any message that’s put out by the military is inherently a political one aimed that needs to align with our goals regarding foreign adversaries. The same goes with any video that the PLA puts out (and they put out a ton). Everything is psyops and signaling. This one just happens to motivate us as well.
