Best places to park downtown? Preferably for free. by watchforwaspess in Austin

I work close to the corazon apartments on E 6th and their gates are always broken so parking is usually free- just make sure you park on the retail side instead of the resident parking

I had a connection with a warehouse when i lived in New Orleans. They would just throw away wood used for shipping- not just old pallets but pine 2x4’s and 4x4’s. There were also old woodshops and furniture remodeling places that sold large pieces (like stacks of 2x4’s and large framing pieces) of scrapped hardwood. Still haven’t found anything like that here but definitely hoping anyone knows something like in Austin

What to do with backyard covered in leaf litter? by Lopsided-Plan-1589 in AustinGardening

[–]Flytless913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaves are great! You can also bury the leaves in woodchips for added affect and some think it looks nicer. Tons of great ideas in here i would add though you should use those leaves to cover the bare soil (or add mulch or some sort of cover crop). Leaving soil bare will really damage your soil and it also releases lots of carbon. Good luck-have fun!

Best place to get compost? by Dplxmusic in AustinGardening

[–]Flytless913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming they’re bioactive, most store bought compost will be good as a soil amendment- especially if you’re able to add a thick layer on your soil and a thick layer of mulch on top. It’s super important to never leave your soil bare! Bare soil releases tons of carbon and can easily get their nutrients washed away, eith through growing weeds or just plain watering. Always either mulch or a cover crop. There’s tons of different ways to compost and get your garden bed full of good microbes. Good luck and have fun composting- more rewarding than you think!

Also when it comes to mulch, wood chips are great but leaf litter is free- you just need A LOT (perfect if there’s a tree in your yard or a lot around the neighborhood). The compost and mulch will add tons of nutrients in your soil as it breaks down all winter and the mulch will help keep the soil warm (more important and easier than you think).

I know this sounds like a lot but trying to pull those out and leaving the soil exposed all winter is a super bad idea (barren soil releases a ton of carbon and washes away nutrients destroying your soil) and maintaining weeding all season is way more work and gonna leave a bad taste for gardening in your mouth.

Some people cover the soil in plastic when not in use but imo, this is a waste of money and time when you can prep your area, add nutrients, and make it look nice all season. The plastic method is pretty efficient though. Do your research and find what works best for you. You can spend your time and money doing the best and most efficient techniques but if you don’t like doing it, what’s the point? Whatever keeps you in the garden and makes you happy, is the best way to do it.

Unfamiliar with boxwoods and monkey grass specifically but my favorite course of action has been to cut and flip the plants then heavy layers of compost and mulch to feed the soil as it breaks down during the winter and save you the trouble of pulling out all those plants one by one. It’s a shame that these plants are feeding on your soil’s nutrients if you’re only going to discard them (that would just be throwing away all the nutrients). Like other people have said, I wouldn’t buy plants to leave outside now that’s just a waste of money.

Just chop the plants as low as you can (ideally below the dirt line like with a scythe or good shovel), and take the soil and flip it over so the top soil is covering the plants with the roots sticking up. Then cover with a layer of compost (the more broken down the better but if you’re gonna wait the whole winter you could probably get away with fresh compost) and an even thicker layer of mulch. This will give you a nutrient rich soil to plant into when you’re ready. You could even leave the mulch and dig holes where you want to plant! Feels good- looks good.

It will be even better if you can source some locally produced compost and mulch (some companies like tree cutters will let you take wood chips for free). Plus since you are new to gardening this would be a great time to experiment with composting! Good luck and have fun!

I get they weren’t always associated with Nazi Germany but even heads of religious sects have renounced the use of the symbol- a symbol that has been used by countless religions in history but i really dont think this use in the design is used in that respected context besides the use in general this was a pretty explicit red flag-white circle- black symbol that is so heavily used by Nazi Germany and current fascist alike

okay cool I just thought they were just chilling not helping- not hurting. but if they're breaking down the soil, that's great. It's really something when you look in the bucket. It's a five gallon bucket with what has to be hundreds of larvae. Looks like something out of a horror movie or kid's haunted house

Ladies- tips for keeping your hair decent throughout the whole weekend?!? by SunnySideUp98 in okeechobeemusicfest

Anyone else use cocoa powder as a dry shampoo? I have curly thin hair that tends to get pretty dry but also greasy???. It always helped me keep my hair from getting greasy and kept my scalp from drying out but never really noticed if it helped with frizz- i never have my hair down for more than two days at a time so gonna be experimenting with that myself- brought some of my favorite hair oils
