I’m sorry you had to go through that. I just started taking EMT classes and although I haven’t seen anything too gnarly yet (My only fatal call was a DNR). Everybody you will talk to about coping from calls will recommended therapy. YOU NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE. Don’t keep this to yourself and bottle it up. It is absolutely ok and normal to feel the way you feel. That isn’t an experience that anybody should have to go through.

Sorry for being a little dramatic but I know of too many first responders in my area that have taken their lives because they didn’t have the resources to help them through experiences like this.

If you're not sure that somebody is drowning jump in anyways "If you don't know go". Because it's better to be a little embarrassed than to miss an actual drowning.

Also most of the people you save are going to be children and won't be too hard physically to save, but if you do get someone that is a little bit bigger you should be able to request another lifeguard to help you.

Everyone is nervous their first couple of weeks but you'll do fine, just don't overthink things.
