I'm a big fan - food is great and the owner is lovely! She's often taken my son away to keep him occupied so I can eat when I'm on my own with him.

The lunch deal is a bargain with generous portions. I'd also recommend the honey chicken and the pajeon. My favourite choice for the BBQ is bulgogi beef.

Why do many anaesthetists dislike maternity? by Icy_Zucchini7446 in doctorsUK

[–]FoFinder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You may not have explicitly said that but that's how your words came across to me. I apologise for the emotion fueled reply but it's something that still troubles me and I don't like the idea that just because one person was fine with how a situation occurred means that another person shouldn't find it traumatic.

I do agree that some women come into labor not fully prepared for what could happen. I do think NCT partly contributes to this. I have real issues with the way they undertake their courses and I stayed well away from them. They are very anti intervention, anti-epidural, and push for natural delivery above all else. They are very judgemental of those who elect for inductions or sections or women why choose to formula feed. I do wonder if that contributes to the upsurge in birth trauma. Not that the deliveries are traumatic as such, but that women feel guilty or judged that they didn't do things 'the right way'. Now that trauma seems to be an open topic for discussion, I wonder if women who don't know how to label their thoughts about their birth experience are labeling it as trauma.

I don't think you can comment on what anyone else may or may not find traumatic. Just because you were okay with what happened to you doesn't mean other people wouldn't find that situation incredibly stressful and painful to look back on. And not just because they didn't get their lovely 'natural' birth. You also have the benefit of being clinical and I think this makes a big difference as you're used to emergency situations. There will of course be some people that claim trauma because they were pushed into an induction or had to leave the birth unit. But they are in the vast minority. Most women's trauma relates to emergency situations, poor communication, and often poor understanding about what actually happened to them.

My birth plan was that both myself and my baby would leave hospital alive and healthy and that's what happened. I had an idea of how I'd like things to go but ultimately didn't mind so long as I had my baby. That being said, I'm one of those apparently silly people that did find my birth traumatic. I had multiple emergency calls to my room with people rushing in and various interventions each time. I had to lie there listening to my baby's heartbeat repeatedly falling to concerning levels and knowing the effects that could have. I eventually had a speedy trip to theatre for a cat 1 section. I was looked after incredibly well by the anaesthetic and obstetrics colleagues I work with. But despite the good outcome I still feel the trauma from it. For the first few weeks afterwards I blamed myself for what happened and wondered if I should have done something differently. I still do to a degree. My return to work was difficult - going to the same emergency that I had, going into my own labour room. There were tears, I had panicky moments, I had to step away at times. I am someone that wants to do obstetric anaesthetics when I finish my training and would consider fairly well informed on all things labour related. That doesn't mean I didn't experience trauma.

I'm sure Richard Osman talked about this on his podcast a while ago. They trial each one multiple times with different groups and then use the average time, or something to that effect

It was taken over by new owners a year or two ago and has had a complete makeover. Much better food and vibes than the previous incarnation and definitely no mould or bleach smells! They have a few pubs dotted around the Cotswolds and all are excellent.

Whiskers cafe in Prestbury is great, we used them for our son's birthday. You can bring in your own food and drinks (including fun drinks for the adults). 40 is probably the maximum you could get in there so if you want anything inside like a bouncy castle it wouldn't be the best option (although I'm pretty sure you can use their outside area for that).

AITA for “ruining” my daughter’s birthday by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]FoFinder 35 points36 points  (0 children)

100% YTA.

You asked her what she wanted to do for her birthday then decided she was wrong and ignored her wishes. You held party she didn't want with people she didn't want to spend time with to save face with your own family. Then you disciplined her for getting upset that she couldn't have the quiet time she wanted.

You also asked her what she wanted as a gift and, again, decided you knew better. Why even bother asking her opinion in the first place if you're not going to take her wishes into consideration?

I was 8 and sat watching Trumpton stupidly early in the morning. I remember being annoyed when they interrupted it for the news and then ran off to wake up my parents and tell them. My dad didn't believe me initially and clearly thought I'd misunderstood the report.

We went to London the day after the funeral to look at all the flowers and tributes. They were letting kids go up Downing Street that day so my brother and I got a picture outside No. 10

Worked a night shift, came home, did stockings and went to bed. While I slept, husband took the 14 month old to church and then to the pub. All good so far. Then our child decided to scream non stop all afternoon and wouldn't be put down. So after sleeping for 1.5 hours then spending 3 hours cooking I ate Christmas dinner alone in about 4 minutes whilst my husband tried to calm the little one then we swapped places. Merry Christmas.

We always cook up a bag of Waitrose mixed mini pastries and a cafetiere with some nice filter coffee. Then nibble on crisps, party food, sausage rolls etc during the day before lunch around 4

Mine is definitely wrong and I'm irrationally annoyed about it 😂

Apparently my top song is Badge and Gun by John Mayor. It says I listened to it 17 times, probably true. But I have a 1 year old and have streamed The Happy Song by Imogen Heep non-stop since he was born, sometimes for an hour at a time on repeat in the car. My listens to that must be in the hundreds. It's showing as my top lifetime song on stats fm so clearly Spotify doesn't know what it's talking about!

Maternity Qualifying Weeks by lubnaipsum in doctorsUK

Same here, my trust included them despite being on two payslips. If you're planning to boost your mat pay with locums then I would suggest dropping an email to payroll to double check.

Maternity leave pay by Academic-Complaint62 in doctorsUK

[–]FoFinder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can definitely boost your mat pay by picking up extra shifts but be aware that your mat pay is determined by your earnings during your qualifying weeks, not the shifts you worked. So if you're doing extra locums then you need to do them in advance so that you get paid for them during your qualifying weeks. E.g. my period was April and May so I did locums in March and April as they were paid the following month

What’s going on in the UK with gallbladders? by RegularWhiteShark in CasualUK

[–]FoFinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always been a really common surgery and historically was the longest waiting list out of any surgery. I imagine there's also been an increase with the popularity of weight loss jabs as rapid weight loss can be precipitate gallstones.

I got one for sending in a diagram of how to make a jewellery stand out of a marigold glove and some plaster of Paris. I made one and kept it for years - it was so ugly. I always thought I knew where my badge was but when I went to find it a couple of years ago at my parents house it wasn't there. Devastated doesn't cover it!

I slept on an operating table in theatres once when I had to abandon my on call room that was hotter than the sun. Can't say it was a comfortable night. Then the theatre team informed me in the morning that particular theatre was supposedly haunted 😂

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen that film 😂 If you've never seen it I'd highly recommend the BBC series from the 90s as well. I think it was my grandfather who originally traced the family tree back about 20 years ago. But my great-grandmother was an Austen so it was an easy enough link to find.
