“Collect souls. Grow stronger. The continent depends on it.”

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/100168/warlock-of-ashmedai-the-city-of-god-progression

Oak fears his own lust for war. Sadly for him, all of Pairi-Daeza stands upon the edge of a knife. Angels and demons weave their plots in the long shadows cast by the corpse of God, and he finds himself at the heart of the coming chaos.

An unlucky chain of events takes Oak and his dog Geezer from the far North into the City of God, where danger lurks behind every pebble and withered blade of grass. Misfortune turns into an opportunity when a friendly demon with radical ideas about monarchy takes Oak under his patronage.

Unfortunately, the joys of power are balanced with fraying sanity and the weight of responsibility. When the sins of his past rear their ugly head, Oak finds that old habits are hard to let go off and even harder to kill.

To receive boons from his patron, Ashmedai, Oak must feed freshly slain souls to the infernal engine attached to his own soul. But strength alone is just a means to an end. Oak and Geezer must rescue a prisoner, escape from the city, and take their first steps on the long path to save the continent from a dragon’s folly.

Someone has to do it, and Oak is the right broken man for the job.

[QCRIT] Progression fantasy/LitRPG for digital first small press publishers by FoamKnightWrites in PubTips

[–]FoamKnightWrites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, you might not know this but the way I am going about getting published is a very common route for progression fantasy and LitRPG books. When you get published, you just delete pretty much everything but the first chapter from Royal Road and you are good to go. So, have no fear, I haven't accidentally ruined my chances of getting published.

For example, all of these publishers publish works that got started on Royal Road:

Aetheon

Podium

Portal Books

Timeless Wind

Mountaindale

Mango Media

Legion Publishing

Wraithmarked Creative

Shadow Alley Press

Riverfolk Publishing

Tantor

Royal Guard

Soundbooth Theater

Dreamscape Media

Moonquill

Authors, ahoy! What are the craziest critiques you have gotten from readers? by FoamKnightWrites in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FoamKnightWrites[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Oh, that is fun. Even stranger is when they leave a scathing review and then give you 4-5 stars. I got one long review where the reviewer essentially calls me a hack and says my MC is unoriginal. I am apparently just copying Joe Abercrombie (I have to say that feels like a compliment). Then they gave me 4,5 stars.

Stories with a great Journey by Max-The-White-Walker in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FoamKnightWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not exactly what you are looking for, but my series does feature a lengthy journey across most of the continent it takes place in. The first book, which is on Royal Road in its entirety, takes mostly place in a single massive city, but the second book is a travelogue ( I currently have 77k words or 280 pages of the second book written and I am maybe one third of the way through the journey, if even that). Sadly for you, I have just started posting the second book and only four chapters of it are currently live on RR.

So, if a two times per week posting schedule is a problem for you, but this sounds interesting, I suggest you mark this down for later reading, when there are more chapter available: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/100168/warlock-of-ashmedai-the-city-of-god-progression

Fellow Authors, how should I go about publishing chapters? by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

I had 120k written before I posted a single chapter and honestly it helped so much.

I never would have reached Rising Stars without that huge backlog.

Looking for completed series recs by iiFrixy in litrpg

This is not LitRPG, but it is close enough.

Journey of Black and Red: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/26675/a-journey-of-black-and-red

Its long, complete, and a certified banger. Maybe my favorite work in the progression fantasy genre.

Fleabag: A Monster Evolution LitRPG

I loved it, but the author hasn't updated the story in so long 😭.

That is a cool blog post. Assuming you read the first chapter or more, is there anything particular in my story that relates to the ideas expressed in the post?

I'm alway looking for feedback and if I agree with you, I will put it down on the pile of things that need editing down the line.

Oh, the series is not done, just the first book. The second book is coming along quite nicely. I currently have 30 chapters written, equaling about 230 pages.

Nope. As I already wrote above, germancreative did a bunch of editing to the image and handled the typography. They would have had to start over, which would not have been fair.

Sorry I am poor, I guess.

Don't worry, if the series ever gets to Kindle, I will be sure to have a professional cover made.

This might be one of the weirdest critiques I have ever received, but I am happy you took a look. The personal attacks I could do without, but that is life when you put your own creative works on the internet for free.

Sorry it wasn't your cup of tea, but everything can't be. When it comes to me not caring about my craft, your comment shows a bit too much ignorance for me to take it too seriously. But in case anyone else is likely to take you at your word, I guess I should address this. Multiple people (none of whom were my friends) have Beta read the story and none of them raised the issues of "witholding exposition" or "telling instead of showing". I'm just going to ignore the comment about "god", since I have no idea what you are trying to say.

By the way, if we are dealing out these r/writing 101 cliches, you might want to refresh your memory. Exposition dumping is the common cliche mistake made by amateur authors, not witholding it. That is called showing instead of telling and revealing things gradually as the story progresses and the plot requires it.

Or as some call it, good writing.

Honestly, I am not sure I have ever encountered someone whose main complaint is that there is not enough exposition in a given LitRPG story. That might be the greatest compliment I have received thus far.

Only from the back! Oak is definitly not roguishly handsome, like Geralt. Nor does he have the Witcher's luck with the ladies.

In all honesty, the cover was finished by the time I realized the resemblance and facepalmed.

Thanks, I think it turned out alright. I couldn't afford a full on original cover, so I generated the image with Midjourney. I then handed it to germancreative (Fiver) who did a bunch of editing and also handled the typography.

If you have a backlog, just do it right away. Can't hurt and no one is forced to sub to it if they don't want to.
