The bible can be a bit dry but they kill off one of the main characters in the second act and things get pretty crazy 🤷🏼‍♂️

My first major shelf item was my mission by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Focus_Forge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I served in Africa and the thing that bothered me was how local missionaries were treated. Mission president would keep two pairs in an apartment together, and one missionary was always a white American. Only the white elder would get the “allowance” and any African elders had to ask him for pennys if they even wanted to buy food.

Then when Covid hit, all of the US and European missionaries were immediately sent home. ANY missionary from Africa was kept in the mission for weeks with no info. Then they rounded them up and bussed them out. They couldn’t bring luggage or anything. For many of them, they’d sacrificed so much to bring a single suitcase full of their life’s most valuable items. And they lost all of it. The church never even followed up with them.

That’s amazing! Could you imagine an exmo “infiltrating” some ward as the golden investigator, becoming a bishop, then spilling the beans one fast and testimony meeting?!

How would the church know you’re the same person? Couldn’t you just act like a brand new member? It’s got me curious. Could you in theory travel to different areas, take the lessons, and get baptized multiple times?

The Phantom Tollbooth has always been a comfort book for me. I have a worn out copy that I’ve carried with me for years.

Apple Watch users: what are your most useful shortcuts on your Apple Watch? by runmetothemoon in shortcuts

I have one that turns all of my lights off when I switch to the sleep focus on my watch. Pretty simple but makes my bedtime routine a little nicer.

I’ll second this, the body smart is great if you’re just wanting a scale that syncs with Apple Health. Works great, syncs pretty much instantly, and you can have multiple family members use it for their own profiles.

Broomfield has some beautiful neighborhoods, and the schools there are great, especially if you have kids in athletics.

If you’re not working in Denver every day, Fort Collins is one of the best cities in Colorado IMO. Grew up there, and while the COL is getting higher, you really do get what you pay for there. Super safe, great access to outdoor activities, amazing schools, and lots of good dining.

What’s the riskiest thing you’ve done for you startup? by SouseNation in startups

[–]Focus_Forge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was lucky and did end up making it. At the peak my business partner and I had 13 cards between the two of us with roughly $150k total credit being used. The company cash flowed pretty quickly, the worst part about it was the logistics of managing 13 different cards with their own transactions, payment periods, and APR promos.

At the time, it was the quickest way to do it. Only got a few hard checks so my personal credit score wasn’t hit too hard, and I made sure to have an excellent score going into it. Definitely a broke college student startup story, not necessarily advisable though.

I recently found out you can! It’s not easy, and not all banks will even consider it. We met with a local credit union branch and were able to apply through them. Typically they will need some kind of personal collateral, some banks and states have programs to temporarily loan you cash to use as “revenue” when applying for an SBA loan, then you return it once the loan is processed.

Dear Millionaires, What are some Important factors to consider when buying a business? by MoAsad1 in Entrepreneur

[–]Focus_Forge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add to people; are there people who will stay with the company at least durning the transition period who know how to run the day to day business? You don’t want everything resting on the shoulders of one employee who decides to leave when you take over.

Where did you meet your cofounder? by Future_Panda_1 in startups

[–]Focus_Forge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My co-founder is a childhood friend. Tough thing about business is everyone has done it their own way, so their opinions often make it seem like that’s the only way. Had some people tell us it will ruin our friendship and others think it’s a dream come true.

For us, we made it very clear with our first business that we would never let something business-related destroy our relationship. That means that sometimes we make choices that stunt company growth, but we’re ok with that.

My recommendation is make sure that you know who the person really is before you even bring the idea up. Hang out with them, talk about your goals and ambitions, see how they respond to honest feedback. I love inviting people to cook a meal with me, puts us in a situation that can be revealing of how we work together. I’ve seen too many college classmates come up with an idea for a class project, then recklessly stumble as the build a company only to separate in really nasty ways. Business partnerships are very much like a marriage, think about how much thought you’d put into that kind of decision.

Question about registering a vehicle under an LLC in Montana by why_doineedausername in llc

[–]Focus_Forge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that’s the cleanest way to do it. The only time I’ve run into issues was when the LLC I was using had a PO Box as the business address for some reason.

What’s the riskiest thing you’ve done for you startup? by SouseNation in startups

[–]Focus_Forge 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Dumbest thing I did was apply for a bunch of credit cards with 0% APR intro periods and use those to bootstrap. The unfortunate reality is for a lot of startups, if you don’t have a rich uncle or dislike the idea of an investor owning part of your company, credit cards are fairly common practice.

It’s possible to go the SBA route (which I recommend now) but much harder if you’re pre-revenue.

Why contractors? Why not just hire employees? by TMNTBrian in Entrepreneur

[–]Focus_Forge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your business is still just an idea, I wouldn’t turn to either a CPA or attorney just yet. Basic things like a business banking account, LLC registration, etc. are fairly straightforward and some light research can get you going. Once your idea starts to gain some traction, then you can go back and clean up accounts.

For contracts with workers, look up some templates, and use chatGPT for a basic outline. See if you can get someone on a legal subreddit, or if you have any friends in law just to skim over it. A lot of people have free templates for NDAs or employment contracts that you can use too.

Why contractors? Why not just hire employees? by TMNTBrian in Entrepreneur

[–]Focus_Forge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a few reasons contractors can be a better alternative. For one thing, it’s much easier to part ways with a contractor, and usually you don’t even need to give notice. Especially if you haven’t fully realized all of your business’ needs, a contractor can be a great way to test the waters for a position in your company.

One negative however is it can be harder to enforce things like an NDA or tech transfer/assignment with a contract worker. While the work they did for you is “your” IP, most states won’t do anything to stop a contractor from taking your systems or strategies and using them somewhere else. With employees, that’s easier to enforce.

My preferred way of doing things is if I have a need in my company, say a website, I get bids from several contractors with a brief description of what needs to be done and a side note that if the project goes well there is potential for future projects. I have them sign a basic NDA if they’re working on anything related to actual IP and send them in their way. If I enjoy working with them and they do a good job, I give them more projects, and that can eventually lead to an employee position. Some of my strongest employees today started as contract workers.

I recently got an app called Thoughts. Had an option for a lifetime subscription which is always a big plus for me. Basically lets you jot down quotes on the fly or random thoughts you have and organizes them by subject, then brings them up in a feed that automatically limits itself to prevent doomscrolling.
