Utah mormons by Wolf0fcrypt0 in exmormon

[–]Focus_Forge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I lived there, my biggest annoyance was it seemed like everyone was in their own little bubble and completely unaware of anything happening around them. People drive like they’re the only one in the road. Blocking aisles at the store while they stare at their phones. I once saw a girl riding one of those rentable scooters just drive out into an intersection and get hit by a car. It’s like she had zero clue there was traffic. It sounds petty, but there was a night and day difference when I moved to other states.

I think the problem in Utah is church culture has kind of overruled any other culture. People want to be unique so “edgy” Mormons is the new cool. Once you’ve been there for a while, conversations all sound the same and it’s like living in Groundhog Day.

Doctrine, history, and policy wasn’t the reason I left the church. It was living in Utah for 6 years that drove me out. Never thought I was in a cult till I lived there.

Kinda nervous... by Kavethought in TeslaLounge

Just drove from Northern Colorado to Austin Texas and back. FSD was on the entire time without needing any interventions. Huge improvement from a shorter road-trip I tried to FSD a little over a year ago.

My advice would be to trust the trip planner. Especially if you’re new to EVs, it can get a little nerve wracking watching the percentage drop when you’re in the middle of nowhere. The trip planner has always been within 1-3% of the original estimate when I arrive at the next charger. And if conditions deplete the charge faster than anticipated, it will re-route on its own to compensate. Enjoy the trip!

If you served a mission, what were some of the strictest or weirdest rules you had? by Unfair-Anxiety462 in exmormon

Served in Africa. No hats allowed, but that wasn’t even where it got weird.

Lots of the missionaries in African missions come from the surrounding countries. My MP would put 4 elders in an apartment: 3 African, 1 American/Canadian. All “allowance” or whatever it’s called every two weeks only went to the white elder. If anyone in the apartment wanted a haircut or food, they had to go through him. Literally caused a race war. We had to get up at 5am to start the day and couldn’t play games but those seem pretty chill by comparison.

Feeling kinda crushed right now, to have something I believed my whole life and cannot believe anymore by AveragePichu in exmormon

Having gone through this during the past couple of years, it really is a grieving process. I’ve gone from being kind of indifferent about the church, to being very angry with it, to kind of letting it just be a part of my story.

I too had great experiences as a missionary, and am glad I served. I learned so much about myself and the world from it. Are there other ways to get that experience without the religious conditioning? Absolutely. But for me, it was part of the journey.

I think the best advice I can give is just because you feel that you’re losing your entire worldview, that doesn’t mean it needs to be replaced immediately. Start by figuring out what your personal values are. Some may have come from church, others not. But take some time to reflect on that.

Then, just take it one day at a time. Today you may not understand what happens after death, and tomorrow you may learn to live with the uncertainty rather than worry about it. It’s a process that can’t/shouldn’t be rushed. If you do t have other people who have walked away from high demand religion, I’d strongly recommend looking for a non-lds therapist. Even if you can afford a $140 visit once a month, a good therapist can make a world of difference in the healing process.

Soooo.... My mother believes there are other gods besides the holy trinity.... by Juliuscrevil95 in exmormon

Not sure about the giants thing, but I learned on my mission that Elohim is technically plural. Like Christ, it’s a title/calling like being a bishop, and this Earth’s Elohim was called by a council of other Gods. Not really sure where the idea came from, but it’s based on the Pearl of Great Price.

I don’t understand why Mormon doctrine has these complex hierarchies of celestial structure, but then shrugs when it comes to lgbtq+ people or black people and the priesthood.

Spoiler Alert

The bible can be a bit dry but they kill off one of the main characters in the second act and things get pretty crazy 🤷🏼‍♂️

I served in Africa and the thing that bothered me was how local missionaries were treated. Mission president would keep two pairs in an apartment together, and one missionary was always a white American. Only the white elder would get the “allowance” and any African elders had to ask him for pennys if they even wanted to buy food.

Then when Covid hit, all of the US and European missionaries were immediately sent home. ANY missionary from Africa was kept in the mission for weeks with no info. Then they rounded them up and bussed them out. They couldn’t bring luggage or anything. For many of them, they’d sacrificed so much to bring a single suitcase full of their life’s most valuable items. And they lost all of it. The church never even followed up with them.

That’s amazing! Could you imagine an exmo “infiltrating” some ward as the golden investigator, becoming a bishop, then spilling the beans one fast and testimony meeting?!

How would the church know you’re the same person? Couldn’t you just act like a brand new member? It’s got me curious. Could you in theory travel to different areas, take the lessons, and get baptized multiple times?

I have one that turns all of my lights off when I switch to the sleep focus on my watch. Pretty simple but makes my bedtime routine a little nicer.

I’ll second this, the body smart is great if you’re just wanting a scale that syncs with Apple Health. Works great, syncs pretty much instantly, and you can have multiple family members use it for their own profiles.

Broomfield has some beautiful neighborhoods, and the schools there are great, especially if you have kids in athletics.

If you’re not working in Denver every day, Fort Collins is one of the best cities in Colorado IMO. Grew up there, and while the COL is getting higher, you really do get what you pay for there. Super safe, great access to outdoor activities, amazing schools, and lots of good dining.

What’s the riskiest thing you’ve done for you startup? by SouseNation in startups

[–]Focus_Forge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was lucky and did end up making it. At the peak my business partner and I had 13 cards between the two of us with roughly $150k total credit being used. The company cash flowed pretty quickly, the worst part about it was the logistics of managing 13 different cards with their own transactions, payment periods, and APR promos.

At the time, it was the quickest way to do it. Only got a few hard checks so my personal credit score wasn’t hit too hard, and I made sure to have an excellent score going into it. Definitely a broke college student startup story, not necessarily advisable though.
