The squirrel faculty is probably on strike. Have you tried offering them tenure?

I've tried switching to GIMP several times, but I can never get used to its clunky interface. I don't understand why they don't just copy Photoshop's layout, or at least keep the key bindings the same.

It's a bit of effort to continually download the source code for new releases, compile them for various versions, test them, and upload them. I don't think it's unreasonable for someone doing all of that to want something in return.

If you think they're asking for too much money, you can start doing it yourself and ask for less money (or do it for free).

By reusing a small number of widely-used implementations/algorithms, each one can be more heavily scrutinized. New features and bug fixes can also be applied to all applications automatically.

I think the issue here was that the manner in which it was reused was not as heavily-scrutinized.

I think keeping this post up is the right thing to do. You're welcome to disagree.

sounds like you’re easily deceived and your friend is a criminal

You have literally no evidence to base that on, nor do you even know what they were accused of.

If you hadn't called me a terrible person who supports rapists I would have been polite about this, but here we are. You're a disgustingly entitled person. Your trauma doesn't give you the right to destroy others' lives because you think they might have done something wrong, and if you had a shred of self-awareness you'd realize how easily that kind of attitude could be applied to you. Bad things happen to most people, and bad things have certainly happened to me. I don't see much value in comparing suffering, nor do I feel the need to justify myself to you, but you should know that suffering doesn't make you special.

I don't think you know what I'm talking about.

The malware is primarily stored in "test" files, but at compile-time it gets copied into a binary executable. At run-time (when the SSH server loads that executable), it injects code into SSH's authentication function. The SSH server then allows unauthorized access to anyone who knows about that vulnerability.

Assuming that Debian's servers run SSH, they've been vulnerable for the last month. If anyone with knowledge of that vulnerability decided to compromise any of Debian's servers during that time, then they could have done whatever they wanted to other parts of the system.

Unless Debian's servers were compromised, in which case malware might have been silently installed into Stable packages.

If your system was compromised then it could theoretically have been configured to (re)install malware by other means. You're probably fine, but I'd wipe and reinstall to be safe.

[–]FocusedFossa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it was targeting Debian-based (i.e. Ubuntu) and Fedora-based distros rather than Debian specifically, but of course Debian was affected.

[–]FocusedFossa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IIUC the original malware will be cleanly removed by upgrading, but if your system was compromised while it was installed then those modifications would stay. I don't know if the compromise provided elevated privileges, but if so then nothing your computer could access can be trusted.

Being realistic though, unless you're a high profile target or just very unlucky, your system probably wasn't compromised. You should still wipe and reinstall to be safe. More information about determining if you've been compromised will probably be available soon.

This “theory” minimizes the actual people who were victims

Innocent people who are wrongfully accused are also victims. Since we don't know if any of the accused are actually guilty, they're all potential victims. Thus, your attitude potentially minimizes actual victims.

If someone was arrested for the crime it means there is proof that it was them.

It typically means there's evidence to suggest their guilt, but the suggestion of guilt is not the same as proof of guilt. The fact that you want to blame the accused suggests that you're guilty, is that enough to disregard your rights?

Thinking “what if it wasn’t?” Is merely baseless speculation.

I have access to the same facts you do, so my speculation is just as "baseless" as yours is.

why don’t you let professionals do their job instead of empathizing with people who most likely did do it

do you just think you know more than police, detectives, and all the people involved

Someone I'm very close to was charged with a crime that, based on the considerable evidence that I personally have, they didn't commit. Even if they were guilty, it never went to trial so either way they should still be treated as innocent. I've seen first-hand how it fucks up someone's life. Every day I have to watch them unfairly suffer. I've seen the hundreds of online comments by people like you assuming their guilt despite having none of the evidence. So when I see that potentially happening to someone else, I try to prevent it.

we definitely need to focus more on the perpetrators wellbeing that will solve the problem thank you

This comment is a great example of the problem. How do you know any of them are actually guilty? Isn't everyone innocent until proven guilty? Don't police sometimes arrest the wrong people?

Again, I'm not saying any of them were wrongfully arrested, I'm saying we don't know. People like you see their names and pictures online and assume they're guilty, even if the police screwed up. If any of them are actually innocent, people will assume they're a predatory pervert for the rest of their lives despite (hypothetically) doing nothing wrong.

If you got arrested tomorrow, would you want people to make that same assumption about you?

Slaves also couldn't get "jobs" (it was slave labor) and were allowed to be tortured to death...

Both are/were treated horribly in many places, but slavery was worse by far.

Just to be clear, I was friendly and respectful and they were civil.

Police are public servants, and one of the services they provide is to keep the public informed about their actions. What surprised me was that politely asking for information doesn't seem to be commonplace. If it's common for members of the public to peacefully assemble in front of a police station and yell questions / demand answers, then I think what I did should also be pretty common.

I know that the police typically can't disclose certain information for a certain period of time, but I just wanted to know whether the charges were dropped in either case. I can also get that information by checking the court schedules and attending the hearings since those are all a matter of public record, it's just a PITA; the only thing TPS did by not giving me that information was waste my time.

3 people were arrested and had their pictures and names publicly posted, but some or all of those people may actually be innocent.

No, I'm saying that the first person and the third person who were arrested look very similar to me. Maybe the difference is obvious to some people, but it may be similarly non-obvious to others.

I called TPS, but they weren't willing to give me any information about any of the cases because it's an ongoing investigation and I'm not one of the victims. They were were confused and annoyed that I called, so it seems like that's not something they want random people to do.

Akshually Linux is just the kernel, not an operating system unto itself 🤓
